Holly has to learn the Canadian provinces/territories and put them on a map for a test Friday.
She learned a '50 states' song in 2nd grade that has served her well. Any similar song for Canada that would include all 13? I found some songs for the 10 provinces.
When did the territories become territories and why aren't they provinces?
Thanks

I'm sorry I can't help with songs, etc., but I like this website for geography games. I like that it has the different levels, so you can start off with just clicking on the names of the provinces/territories and then advance to putting them on the map, to typing in the names.

I have never heard of a song to learn the provinces and territories-would be kinda fun to see the lyrics to one.
I am also embarassed to say I don't much about why territories are not provinces (I could google it but that would be cheating ;)). Territories are very tied to the federal government while provinces, like states, have more individual powers and jurisdiction.
I hope Natasha jumps in here because I am sure she knows a lot about this subject.
I am so impressed yor DD is studying Canada. I am always surprised by how little most Americans know about Canada's geography. Most have no idea where Victoria is-they seem to know "Canada" and "Toronto" and that's about it. :)
I think "Vancouver" may get on people's radar during the Winter Olympics. :)

I also can't think of anything, song or otherwise, to connect all the provinces and territories. The only one I remember is for the Great Lakes.....HOMES (Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Eric, Superior).

I Googled "mnemonic Canadian provinces territories" and found the following:
Billy and Sally Made Our Queen Nervous Playing Near Needles.
(British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, PEI, Nova Scotia, and Newfoundland)
Then for the territories: You're Not Nice (Yukon, Northwest Territory and Nunavut)

Use a common memory device: make up a sentence, no matter how nonsensical, that begins with their first letters, or the first two if you can. Quebec might limit you, but I'm sure that can be remembered out of hand.
For example, the beginning of the US Presidents as I learned them and can still recite them (as well as all of them the same way).
"Watch A Jewish Man Modeling A Jacket."
(Washington Adams Jefferson Madison Monroe Adams Jackson)

Never heard that before! Mnemonics are great. I also don't know much about the territories, other than what Kima said about them being federal. Nunavut is the newest one, having been split off from the Northwest Territories in 1999. In school, I remember getting tested on the territories to see if we knew which one was singular and which one was plural, i.e. Yukon Territory and Northwest Territories.

Oops! I didn't see Canice's reply. We were posting almost simultaneously.
Like I said, though...... :)
