We are just replacing our gas grill of 14 years with a Weber Genesis Silver C (we get delivery of it on Friday). The lady at the store says she bakes cakes on/in it. I could see doing pie or a crisp, but not a cake. Has anyone ever tried this?
Also, is the Weber that much different from a regular gas BBQ? I thought someone once mentioned here that it takes a while to get used to them.
Any info is appreciated.

I suppose it would be possible to bake a cake in a grill but the bigger question is - why would you want to?

I can think of 3 reasons
1. Not heat up the house
2. In case the power is out (something my parents experience on occaison - which prompted my first time grilling pizzas)
3. Just to try it - sounds intriguing to me - although I'm not sure what type of flavor you'd get.
I'd think the big thing would be that you couldn't open it and check on the cake a lot - causes a huge variation in the temperature. I have baked focaccia on the grill with good results.

I am more intrigued with roasting a turkey on the weber. My neighbors did this for Thanksgiving a few years back and I think they were happy. My friend was especially happy because her husband took control of the cooking. What is it about men and grills? In terms of the cake, I guess I am not a big cake fan so I see no earthly reason to try making one on the grill. Just because you can doesn't always mean you should!
I'm also in the "OK, but why?" category here. I'm sure you could, but when would I want to, especially if I might get a smokey flavor? Turkey, on the other hand, we have done and enjoyed.

Thanks for your comments. "WHY" was my first thought too. Since she mentioned it, I was just wondering if anyone on this board had done it. I just don't think that you could get the same product in the Weber. But my thought was that a pie or crisp would work. I would be leary about the flavor as well. Oh well, I may try it at some time, just to see - maybe just a cake mix so that if it didn't turn out, I didn't ruin a fortune in ingredients. I have double wall ovens, so I don't need to use it.
As for a turkey, I think it would be great as well. I think it would be even better on the rotisserie. We did not buy it this time, but think we may next year. It's an add on that can be purchased at any time.

Regarding the smoked turkey on the grill thing, we do it every Thanksgiving. It is juicy and flavorful, not to mention it frees up the oven for other dishes (and if hubby does it, gets some of the cooks out of the kitchen!). We use the indirect smoking method from the Weber website mentioned before.
our newspaper recently did a segment on outdoor grills, and they talked about making an apple pie on the grill. i never thought of that before, but it sounded like it would work ok. what they described sounded more like a galette or tart rather than a pie, though. also, they talked about grilling octopus, which made me think of kim, but they only showed a picture (no recipe). seeems they just skewered each tentacle... if you ask me, the apple 'pie' sounded much tastier!
