I see a lot of posts about dog and cat questions, so here's my question:

What type(s) of pets do you have?

I have 2 dogs (both Pointers)- our children who are spoiled rotten!

I am such a cat person! We have two adorable cats and they are so very pampered. Indoor only.

3 beagles, here! Casey (7), Nacho (6), and Abbey (4). We also have a cat, Sara (age unknown, maybe 5ish), who is indoor/outdoor but NEVER leaves the backyard. Oh, and a bird (Quaker) named Tuck, who is a huge crack-up and a BIG talker.

We've also had other critters, but they passed away recently (Molly, the sweetest hamster in the world, and Larry, my bunny of 8 years). I'm trying to stay away from owning any more small critters, because they come and go so quickly and my heart can't handle all that breaking. :(

We have 3 indoor, spoiled, lazy cats. And are really really trying hard to ignore the impulse to get a puppy!

We have two cats, fish and so many bird feeders in the yard I feel I should count them too, but they aren't official. The boys want a kitten and a puppy.

Dog lover checking in. I'm not much of a cat person, or rather I am so crazy about dogs that it cancels out my desire to own cats!

One dog at the moment- an 8 yr old pug/Welsh Corgi/unidentified terrier mix whom we located through the Humane Society 7.5 yrs ago in Colorado. She is the love of our life, our baby, our joy. It's time to get another, to train while we still have Lucy. We'd like a lab mix or another pug/Corgi.

We're trying to convince DH's parents to give us one of their 3 purebred labs-the female Golden. She and Lucy are best buds.

2 cats, 8 fish in 2 tanks ( for the 2 kids) and during the summer months, we've had the privilage of caring for cockroaches (2 summers, 4 cockroaches at a time), 2 gekos (1 summer) and 1 tarantula (this summer). The summer pets are from school. They live in the classrooms during the school year and during vacations and summer they are then farmed out to the parents & kids. The gekos and tarantula eats crickets. So, we have anywhere from 25 - 0 crickets during the summer months. They alone can be pretty noisy.
I voted for 2 of the above. I guess we are a zoo during the summer.

Good poll! I have noticed a few fellow bird moms here! I love dogs & cats but a bird suits my current lifestyle well.

I am "owned" by 4 year old cockatiel named Cordel that I have had since he was 10 weeks old. His name was Cordelia (aka: DeDe) until I found out that she is a he. He isn't a talker but he does this melodic "song" when he's in a good mood called the "happy song". He really gets into it, it looks like he's telling a story, the beak a moving and the body going along with it. He will on occasion cluck like a chicken.

He loves to "help"me get ready in the morning and has his very own makeup bag. He likes to get into mine so when I needed a new one, I gave him my old one and he loves to roost on it and thinks he's a king when he's on it. He will hiss at my BF if he gets to close to it. Poor Mark will tell him that he doesn't want the makeup bag.

Cordel has his own bathroom too and has a shower perch on the mirror where he admires himself. He used to not let BF in his bathroom but he's better about it now.

My roomie has 2 elderly beagles named Peggy and Lucie. I have to keep a baby gate up in the doorway to keep them out of my room as they eat the bird's food and get into the wastebasket. However, they aren't interested in attacking the bird, just the food. The bird will hiss at them and has been known to dive bomb them for which he gets a scolding. She also has a goldfish named "Fishie" who lives in the kitchen
is very friendly even after being fed. She loves to watch me cook.

Peggy loves to "help" me clean the cage, which I call dander and doo doo duty. We also have terminology for the dogs. Scratching the rug before lying down is called "cat boxing", scratching their backs under the chair and moving back & forth is called "2 stepping". Anyway, I could go on and on about Cordel, I just love him. I like the dogs too but they aren't very well trained and are getting more so with age. I have gone on too long, sorry.

Wendy,

I loved your post! Tuck knows all the dogs' names and even calls them sometimes. They get along really well, especially he (I say he, although we've never had him sexed) and Abbey. Abbey is enthralled with him and will just watch him and follow him around. And he ADORES showers, although he's content with bathing too. :)

One of my beagles 'scratches' his back under the coffee table - it's so cute. I thought he was the only one.

Another person owned by a pup. Actually she's seven years old now but in my mind they're all puppies 'til the day they die. Then they become angel-pups!

My canine companion is a basenji and Jasmine-Rose is her name. She's been with me for four years now since she adopted me. Much as I'd like another basenji, this one has proven that she has to be the only four-legged resident. Just as well - basenjis can be very mischievous and Jasmine is finally starting to settle down a bit. I'm not sure I have the energy or patience to start over again!

Well, I'm severely allergic to cats so they are out. We are total dog lovers and last summer had to put down our German Shepherd Sophie. It was a horribly heartwrenching thing to have to do and we decided at the time that we would not get another dog until we have a more stable lifestyle (read DH retires from the military).

Reptiles aren't allowed in military housing but if they were we probably would get a iguana.

Do Geckos that aren't named count? We have a ton of them around here. We hear them "chirping" in the house at night and occasionally I will go in the kitchen in the morning and see their droppings on the stove or countertops. DD loves them, but as a two year old, she isn't really very gentle and has pulled their tails off quite a bit. Nothing more comical than the look on her face when they are running away from her and she is left standing there with a tail in her hand!

We have a dog that is 17 years old. A Maltese that has ruled this roost for all these years.
I never did like cats but now I have 2 of them. Maizey is in charge of everything esp. showing Bailey that it is her house and she just tolerates Bailey being around.
I have another stray that I have been feeding for about a year but no matter what I can't get her/him to come to me. I tried so hard to get her (since my 2 cats are females I tend to think of it as a female) to come in last winter; as we had the worst winter ever. I don't know how she survived. Why doesn't she trust me? I just can't figure cats out

KValley-- we have a corgi terrier mix too! The more posts I read from you, the more I know we'll be fast friends :D

You can see her and her brother at http://www.cms-consult.com/smoody/photos/dogs.html

I'm curious if they look similar! We've never seen another dog that looks like Murray. The brown/white one is Murray (female) and the black and white one is Preston (male); he's a border collie/terrier mix. Both are pound pups.

I suspect it's hard to overcome neglect and abuse. In the case of truly feral (born in the wild) animals, whether dogs or cats, it is extremely difficult to get them to trust humans.

Me: I have 2 cats, Boomer (Sable Burmese) and BJ (Bombay). I grew up with large dogs, and now that I have a house with a yard, I am looking to get a puppy in April. (Incidentally, I grew up with dogs and was certain that dogs and cats were opposites and not at all alike. Wrong!! They all share the 'pet' mentality, along with birds and horses and anything that you make into a 'pet'.)

Two yellow labs here - actually they are both fox red - a 3-1/2 year old female, Brandy, and a 9 month old female, Bella. Also our children, and the lights of my life. Absolute sweethearts, both of them. They totally converted my non-pet owning husband ("eeewwww - their dog hair is everywhere ") to, "Brandy, Bella - where's my kisses??!!!!" And he carries them around everywhere (yes, carries 60 pound dogs around!).

I have Artemus (a.k.a. Kung Fu Kitty)...who has changed alot since Karmel, my wonderful Sheltie, was put down two weeks ago. He's more cuddly.

I was very much a dog person, DD wanted him and we said yes, thank goodness....the house would be so very empty. I love this cat. We are thinking of getting another maybe next year.

Ralph, I always wanted a Borzoi...my dream dog...yes most people have dream houses, cars...mine is a dog!

We have two female dogs - lab mixes - Abbie (brown) and Bailey (yellow). They are best friends.

I married into a cat-loving family. My sister-in-law has 3 cats (Rudy, Ben and Stella) who are willed to me if something should happen to her. She (my sister-in-law) also assumes ownership of our dogs, should something happen to us. They will all have to peacefully co-exist, somehow.......

My other sister-in-law has 2 cats.

I'd like to imagine a home where I can have both dogs and cats. Certainly not now, because I've seen my dogs around cats - there is no peace in the house when that happens.

Right now we only have 1 cat. He's a 13 year old, very sweet, but with failing kidneys *pout* He was my first pet that was mine got him in college.

I like dogs too, but DH thinks DDs need to be a little older, both are under 4. We used to have 2 cats and 1 dog. 1 cat died, dog died both old. Got a replacement cat and she apparently got feluke at the pound and we had have her put down at 13 months.

I grew up with a lot of pets. When I was in high school we had 8 cats and 2 dogs. In/after college counting my pets we had 10 cats and 2 dogs. We've also had fish, rabbits, hamsters, iguanas, lizards, and birds.

It was never boring at our house.

One cat here.... a 12 year old calico. I have had her since she was 8 months old. She has gotten a bit more crabby in her older years, and lately has taken to waking us up at 6 a.m. most mornings. Otherwise, she is incredibly affectionate, follows me from room to room, loves to lay next to or on top of me or Brian, and is very talkative. She goes outside a little... it used to be more but she has been eating grass then coming inside and getting sick (always on the carpet) everytime lately. So, I don't let her out much anymore.

I have been thinking about getting a dog... I want an airedale, but I need to fence the yard first. I also need to remember that I have nearly white carpets and keep thinking. Gina

I have one dog and that is certainly enough! Digby is a 1 1/2 year old golden retriever. Our life is no longer as peaceful since she's come along, but I don't know what we'd do without her! She's become such a part of the family that my parents and in-laws refer to her as their granddog. :D
My husband and I have discussed getting another dog, but when I look at all the fur that currently floats around our house, I come down to earth.

A zoo in progress....:p

I've had my 2 cats forever! Dave (Divana Strigidae) aka Lord Fussyfoot of Hufflepuff Manor; and Mistress Danka Bastet, the Queeeeeeeennn of the night. Dave's 8 and Danka's 5 now. We just 'adopted' my DH's parents cat TimmyTodd the Odd. He was raised around dog's and is reeeeaally strange for a cat, he's also huge (big, not fat), about 20lbs & knee high (I'm 6', so I have high knees!)
Just this spring, we adopted a dog; Dewey aka Count Deusenberg of Clifford Heath; a beautiful 2 yr male English Springer Spaniel-liver and white. Our vet friend saw him running through his property up north & caught him. He was skin and bones, living on deer carcass & full of porcupine quills. Our friend being a vet, took him in and cleaned him up, put out the requisite APB's, but no one claimed him, so now he's ours--55lbs of hairy dog!:p He's butter, tho and the cats have adjusted pretty well, in spite of themselves.

Another dog lover here! Actually, I probably would have a cat, but I'm allergic. Besides, I like the goofiness of dogs. They are a source of constant entertainment. Not saying that watching a cat chase his shadow is NOT entertaining, but still...

I adopted an abused terrier/poodle/cocker/bischon frise mutt almost six years ago named Riley. He's the most lovable little guy I've ever known. He's never met a stranger...as long as the new person has a lap and a hand, he'll be their new best friend.

We adopted a neglected Siberian Husky nearly 5 months ago named Sasha. Took her a few months to settle in with us and trust us, but now she has more personality than any dog we've ever had! I call her 'Chewie' half the time, because she 'talks' to me half the day when she feels I'm not paying attention to her, and her 'talking' sounds like Chewbacca from Star Wars. We don't have kids, so these 'Fur-Babies' are our children. Wouldn't trade either one of 'em!

I used to have a Netherland Dwarf bunny named Bailey that I had litterbox and leash trained, but had to give her up when Riley entered the picture. She definitely didn't like sharing her house! She'd run around the house thumping her foot when she saw me petting the dog! Had to make a choice, so Bailey got a new home. Still, I'd love to have another house rabbit! :D

We have a seven-year-old Boston Terrier named Rocky. Spoiled rotten and an absolute joy. We got him as a puppy four days after our wedding, and he is our baby. I agree with Jasmine-Rose. It doesn't matter if he is seven; he's still my puppy.

I also have a 10-year-old white German Shepherd, but she lives with my parents. She's just gorgeous, and maybe the most spoiled dog on the planet. You just can't contain people with their grandpuppies. :D

I don't entirely trust the petless. I just wish I could bring my husband around to my way of thinking--which is, if 1 is good, 8 is better!

Indoor pets are Manda, a Doberman-Rottweiler-something-mutt, who's 5 now and getting very spoiled since my mother moved nearby this summer. Grandma comes over to get "granddog" for sleepovers at least once a week. Kitty is a calico cat, adopted when I lived in Belgium, so she's European with a sulky personality to match. She was long used to ruling the roost, but then, this summer, I rescued Olivia, who was neglected, and Olivia has turned out to be a bit of a bully. So Kitty spends even more time slinking about and looking sulky than she used to.

Outdoor pets are my girls--10 hens. Amelia, Ungwen, Cookie, Beatrice, Eleanor, Dora, Astrid, and another Olivia (but since the chicken doesn't know her name, I figured it was ok to reuse it for Olivia the Cat), and then two which are nicknamed The Control Chickens (they have no real names). (Because they've always been such average chickens, showing no personality whatsoever, that they're like their own little control group from a science experiment.)

One kitty, Sativa, better known as Missus Tiva or Tiva or Teev. Or Stinkybutt Kittykat. She is our 2 year old baby. DH and I cam home a day early from our honeymoon because we missed her so much, and I can't sleep without her. Dang, she's got us suckered. We sing kittycat songs to her all the time. We've meowed "The Girl from Iponema" more times than I can count. It just meows so well. I had to put her on a diet because she's an indoor spayed girl and was getting really fat. Oh, I love my fat ol' kitty.

I have two Pembroke Welsh Corgis named Denbigh (den-bee) and Talbot. They are sister and brother, and they could not be more different. Denbigh is the princess who can be unbelieveably demanding and independent minded. She only wants affection when she wants it, and most of the time, she doesn't care to be around people. Amazingly, she tries to herd the animals on the TV whenever we watch nature shows. She runs side to side around the TV and barks like crazy. She also tries to herd ducks in the backyard, and she has done in a number of neighborhood rabbits (including one she left by her food bowl on Easter morning this year--I guess she was letting us know that Hill's Science Diet wasn't cutting the mustard). Talbot, on the other hand, is the laziest lump of lovin' that ever hit the Earth. He can't stand to be apart from people, and the only thing in life that motivates him is food. Perhaps that's why he is so tremendously overweight. (He's on a strict diet now.) In fact, when I was recently in the hospital, he came to visit and just layed on the bed with me for 3½ hours. He lives to be petted. I wouldn't trade these two for anything in the world. The fact that they're so different from one another just makes them seem so much more precious.

Rudy is our precious lab/golden retriever/chow mutt.

I never, ever thought I would be a dog person, but gave into DH's longing for a pup last Christmas. We got him at 5 weeks old and named him Rudolph since he arrived during the holidays.

He has absolutely stolen my heart! He is all white, with floppy, golden ears...coal black, soulful eyes...and the most playful disposition.

No matter how bad my day has been, this little creature is always so happy to see me. It is impossible not to smile! All those statistics about dog owners having lower blood pressure make perfect sense to me now!

I'm an absolute dog lover. My DH and I have a very spoiled rotten yellow lab named Bailey. He knows all of his toys by name and goes to get them out of his "toy box" when we identify them by their name. He jumps into the water off of our dock at our lake house just for the heck of it. Best of all, he goes running out of the front door every morning and brings us the morning paper when we tell him to. Our neighbors just laugh! He is as precious as he can be. :D

I just wanted to share that as of Friday, I am the proud owner of a lovebird! He's only 2 weeks old, so he won't be able to come home with me for about a month or so. He's absolutely adorable. He's a lutino, so when his feathers grow in, he'll be yellow with an orange face and tail.
I actually, don't know if it's a ''he'' or ''she'' -- but I've been referring to it as ''him.'' Now I just have to think of a name! :D

I have a 1 year old Siamese cat named Willow. Someday, when we move and have a bigger yard, I'd love to have a dog. A lab or a golden retriever. I've always been a "cat" person but lately have really been wanting a dog to complete our family. Some of my favorite "beings" are dogs.

michelern - LOL about Bailey. We also have a yellow lab - Roley. As soon as I read your post, I ran to DH and said that Roley is going into bootcamp starting tomorrow! He's a pretty smart guy, but "ball" is as far as he gets with his toys. When we tell him to get his "ball", he's just as likely to come back with his stuffed hedgehog as he is an actual tennis ball. As far as the paper goes...he'll follow me to the end of the driveway...does that count? :D

To appease my other creature urges, we visit our friends who have two cats - Tommy & Figaro. They are BEYOND cute!!! And talk about lovers! Tommy INSISTS that you hold him and then sounds like a freight train with all his purring. Roley doesn't know quite what to make of them. T & F live with their own lab so they're totally unafraid and will stand nose to nose with Roley. But even being that close to them, Roley still whines. I'm not quite sure what he wants from them -- maybe a little song and dance? ;)

I love ALL animals! I even let the deer and groundhogs eat my flowers because I figure they have as much right to them as I do.

But since that was the only option I chose it.
We have 2 dogs-Jolee, a blue healer/Austrailan shephard mix and Charlie-really not too sure about this guy-could be Spaniel/Bassett mix or Border Collie/Basett mix, we're pretty sure about the Bassett hound from the very, very short legs and the well versed howeling. He's 5 months old and was a gift from a good friend after Roxi-girl died this past Easter (she was almost 2 1/2).
Next is Squeaker, an indoor/outdoor cat who made the move from the big city very well. Roams about until he sees a cow...
He is a Tabby/Siamese mix and only needs me when the bowl has a hole or DH is not around to pet him.
Cinnamon, is a 3 yr old Guinea pig, bought to appease a young son who lost his Hamster, Dave, one night (didn't know they had such a short life span). Now I find out that Cinnamon will probably be with us after the grandkids are grown!
Tex, is a Jerusalem/Mammoth donkey. Granted not everyone will think a donkey is a pet until you meet Tex. After all, what else is he good for? He loves to have his ears scratched and he truly loves carrots, apples, celery...just about anything in your hand! And he "sings" when he sees you coming!
AnnaMae and Crystal are both "retired" mares, 20 and 18 respectively, and BTW Tex is in love with both!
Player is a 3 yr old Thoroughbred that stands 17 1/2 hands and loves to prance when he's all saddled up! He loves cookies but remains unconvinced that carrots are a good thing!
Rascal (real name Stands in Boots) is a 1 yr old Paint(son of Crystal), chestnut with flaxen mane and tail. And talk about a sweetheart! Scratch his rearend and he'll follow you ANYWHERE!!! Also very leary of carrots but dearly loves his cookies!
DS #2 is raising a steer (JohnBoy) for the major shows this year so he's kind of like a pet!

I apologize for rambling but it's hard to explain a zoo in a very few words! We are definitely Green Acres here!

I am owned by four cats and two dogs. My newest acquisition i've posted about. They're fun to have...altho I am quite perplexed by people who get dogs and then leave them in their backyard all day and all night. Why bother?

Some of the excuses I've heard (in no particular order) they like it outside, the kids go out there all the time and play with them, they chew, too big, shed, pee in the house, they slobber. Hmm. Don't ya wonder?

Our Kirby is after the baseball player, Kirby Puckett. How about your's? We get lots of vacuum cleaner comments, which is pretty appropriate, considering his aptitude as a garbage hound.

I think "reject" dogs, like our Kirby and your Jake, turn out to be such good dogs in large part due to gratitude. Kirby has "told" us he was abused in his previous life by how he has reacted to some things (Seeing a collander held by me at hip level on the way back from the compost pile, for one. We figure someone used to hit him with things, 'cause he cowered and ran very fast), and I think he's still marveling at the fact that he doesn't get hit, doesn't get yelled at, gets to be inside with us instead of going crazy from boredom and loneliness in the yard, and that, while we have rules, he understands them (mostly, except for the kitchen trash) and he knows where he fits in with the "pack." He's a totally different dog from the one we adopted a year and a half ago. He didn't even wag his tail when we first brought him home, and now he just "grins" and wags his tail all the time.

I love that about dogs--if it's true what Robert De Niro said about dog people in "Meet the Parents," I don't care. I love that they reward kindness with adoration. :D

Amanda, Kirby is named after Kirby Van Burch. He had the white tigers and played in Missouri. My mom named him, actually. She loved that guy. I agree. Animals taken in are much more grateful. I know that Jake was yelled at a lot because you would raise your voice and he would roll on his side. He's not the same dog either. He's a lot of fun and loves kids! i don't have to worry about him biting anyone which is a plus because he loves everybody. AND he smiles.

I have a sweet little cat named Tiger. He was abandoned by an older couple that were on a boat beside ours about a year and a half ago. It's sad because he is declawed and afraid of people. The people on the boat just left one day when he was off the boat! Can you imagine??? So after a couple of months, we moved our boat into the other peoples' boat slip, and poor Tiger thought they'd come back, so he came aboard in the evening, crying. When he saw me he ran away. The next night he came back crying again. This time he let me feed him, he was so hungry. In time he grew to trust me and now he's very loveable. The problem is, my DH gets asthma when he's around cats, among other things, so he can't really be mine. I need to find him a good home. He's only 4 years old. He's sleeping outside on the deck of our boat as I write this. He wants to come inside and be with us really bad, but I can't let him. Sometimes he justs sits and looks at us through the window.:(

Thanks luv2cook, I'm trying. It's hard to find someone to take an adult cat! It would be horrible for him to go to an adoption center, he would go nuts and it would kill me to hurt him that way. I think he was abused when he was younger because if I try to play with him with a small piece of rope it scares him and he runs under the building where our boat is. He doesn't like to be held either, and he used to duck his head when you reached down to pet him. But he really is very sweet and loveable. He makes this little noise in his throat when he's being loveable--I call it his muskrat noise! And even though he doesn't like being held, he loves to curl up in your lap.

If you or anyone has any suggestions on finding a home for him I'm all ears. I've sent pics of him via email to all the animal lovers I know and I'm constantly telling people about him. (He's really beautiful with large green eyes and lots of stripes.) I don't know what else to do.

We have three house pets. Misty, our long hair cat, is our senior citzen and just turned 15 in March. She is also a colon cancer survivor and also a housecat . Kitty, our short hair tiger, is our teenager and was once a stray that we took in. He loves the outdoors but comes in at night. I can't sleep unless Kitty is by my side. And last but not least, is our Ferret, Murray. He is 5 years old and is the most fun when he is awake. DD brought him home a month before she left for college and I was not a happy camper. All I needed was 15 minutes though and I feel for him. She went off to college and I had another pet to take care of. That was 5 years ago.

No pets right now, but I had an adorable Golden Retriever up until last year - we were inseparable. My plans definitely include getting another Golden before too long! I also wouldn't mind having a second dog - either another Golden or another breed (like a Cavalier!).

Dogs are so incredible to have around, especially after a hard day. I must say that the only thing that could make me really laugh for a moment earlier this week was one of my sister's dogs (also a Golden) being a ham. Much needed comic therapy.

Hi everyone,

I'm brand new to the Forum, so thought I'd jump right in and post.

I am mom to two kitties -- one is a 16 pound yellow tomcat named "god" (don't ask, my boyfriend named him) and a 2 pound Ocicat kitten named Callie. God is my boyfriend's cat, and Callie is my new little kitty. I had an 8-1/2 year old Ocicat, but we had to put her down because she developed a rare form of cancer. :(

Anyway, looking forward to participating in these forums in the future!
