Hi Melissa! Welcome and thanks for getting us started this month!

You can actually put me down for a boy. :D :D :D We had our level II ultrasound yesterday and everything looked good. Since I am a geezer preggo the little guy is at risk for all kinds of things, but they're figuring the Downs' risk at this point (based on the u/s) is half of one percent, which we can live with. We opted out of all the earlier prenatal testing and the amnio, so that was nice to hear. We go back in a month to u/s his heart a little better and to look at the uterine blood flow again (I had preeclampsia with my first son), so I look forward to seeing the little guy again.

I was reading some pregnancy magazine while we waited yesterday (I haven't really read any this pregnancy) and was surprised to read something about pregnant women needing approximately 71 grams of protein per day. Suddenly my cheeseburger cravings were explained. ;) (Says she who's eating a sausage, egg & cheese biscuit as she types)

How's everyone else doing?

Thanks for getting us started, Melissa, and congratulations!

I am hanging in there at 25 1/2 weeks. I really can't complain that much, although I do (and will) anyway. :o I can't remember the last time I slept through the night (which I used to do almost every night) - either I wake up because my arm has fallen asleep from laying on my side or because I need to pee for the hundredth time. So that's fun. Morning sickness has subsided to only mild but I would love for it to go away entirely. Still having a lot of lower back pain but it's bearable. The heartburn (or whatever pain it is I get beneath my left breast under the rib cage - I am not convinced it's actually heartburn but no one knows for sure), however, is not. It sometimes reaches the point of excruciating, but my doc says all I can do is grin and bear it. Nice.

Other than that, all is well. :p I'll have my glucose test on December 23, and we are finally starting to make decisions about baby gear, get registered, and put together the nursery, so I feel like there is progress being made. Oh, and it's looking more and more like DH will be able to quit his job in March and be a SAHD, at least for a few years, so we're both really excited about that. It won't be easy but I think it will be worth it. My biggest worry is having a network of babies for ours to interact with since she won't be in daycare, but we will figure that out. I know there are lots of moms groups but not sure about dads.

Hello Melissa. Thank you so much for getting us updated. Mark me down for a boy! We have two girls, so this is very exciting news to the family. I had a level II ultrasound (because of advanced maternal age and a positive nuchal translucency test) in late October, and they found no hard or soft markers for Downs. Everything looked perfect! Even with those results, it still only reduced the Downs risk to 1 in 80. After much agonizing, and against my initial desires, I decided not to check further with the amnio. My OB will do regular ultrasounds at 28, 32, and 36 weeks, and if those show anything abnormal, I'll probably go through with the amnio then.

Nausea is pretty much gone (I'm 23 wks); now I am battling hemorrhoids and carpal tunnel. I had both of these problems in previous pregnancies, but not this early. Oh, and the skin tags. Gross. Weight gain has been good (5-6 lbs.) but I think now that the nausea is gone that will be a new battle. The last couple days I have been eating like a lumberjack.

I am starting to collect baby items. Since we got rid of all the stuff we used with the girls ( thinking we were "done"), I really don't want to buy everything a second time, so I'm begging and borrowing almost everything. I guess one advantage to "advanced maternal age" is that I am a little older and wiser about what "stuff" I'll actually need. I will definitely be making do with less baby supplies this time around.

Congratulations to all the new little munchkins, and happy gestating to the rest of you!

well, I might as well join in since I see I am in good company with the "senior citizen" pregnancies. I am due on July 29th and I will be 40 (and a half) when the baby is born.

of course it is still really early for me (only 6 weeks along) and I know I have a decent chance still of miscarrying... my sis miscarried at a younger age than this a few years back. but we will just hope for the best.

my other kids are 8, 4 1/2 and 2. the girls are going to be thrilled when I tell them (not til the new year sometime).

Thanks for starting us off melis_d and congratulations to you!

Leah- Congrats on the boy! We're having a second boy too!

Eva- That great about DH being able to stay home! I hear you on the sleeping thing. I really can't complain about much but I miss sleeping on my back and wake up several times a night between the bathroom visits and freaking out that I'm not on my side like I "should" be.

Autumn- Glad you're starting to feel better nausea-wise.

Congratulations to you too Val!

As for me- I'm 24 weeks today. My next appt is in two weeks and will include the one hour glucose test which I really hate. It's so hard for me to drink that whole thing in five minutes! Feeling lots of movements but I'm very sure he's still breech. I have three weeks of work before 2.5 weeks off for the holidays. My plan is to take some of that break to go through Cranford's clothes and baby things and see what we need after that!

yes, I saw your name as the last person posting on the thread and I immediately remembered that you were on the thread with me last time. remind me... when was that baby born and was it a boy or girl? mine was nelson born on december 29th. he is coming up on 2 years old now.

that is great that you are feeling good at 9 weeks. that is usually a bad time in the pregnancy for me. here at 6 weeks I am still good, but come 9 weeks I am sure it won't be rosy.

congrats to all the other people coming out of the woodwork -- melis and carrie.

thanks for the well wishes, all.

also, belated congrats to eva, mary kate, leah, and paige.

autumn, I sent you a pm.

paige, how old is cranford again? I seem to recall we were on the pg thread at a similar time when I had kate. she is now 4 1/2.

Hi Everyone!
Sorry I've been MIA, but I've been tied up with babies!!! My girls arrived on 11/17 and have been keeping us pretty busy since then. Here's the birth stat stuff:

Adeline Elisabeth arrived at 5:22pm and weighed 5lb 10 oz, and was 17 3/4 inches long

Elinor Amelia was born at 5:23pm (which quite honestly, must have been the longest minute of my life, because I could have sworn there was like a 5 minute delay between the two) and weighed 5lb 15oz and was also 17 3/4 inches long

The girls are fabulous despite being born at 35 weeks. Neither of them needed to go to the NICU or had any major issues (just some jaundice in both of them). I had somewhat prepared myself for that to happen, so I was pleasantly surprised when they brought Addie over to DH in the OR, and then followed up with bringing Ellie over, which we had been told was the sign that they were ok.

As for the birth, it was a C section because Addie was still breach. I was admitted to the hospital on 11/16 (my 35th birthday and official entrance into the AMA club) after my scheduled NST. THe babies were fine, but my blood pressure had continued to creep up, so my OB wanted to admit me so that they could just get regular BP readings to get more information and then figure out a plan. I sort of thought that it would mean I wasn't going to make it to 38 weeks, but that we would schedule the C-sec for like 37 or 36 1/2 weeks. It honestly never occurred to me that I would deliver that week, because all my labs were fine and continued to show no other signs of preeclampsia.

So on Tuesday I was finishing my lunch and just waiting for the OB to come around and discharge me, when she showed up and said she would need to deliver- my blood pressure had continued to go up from the previous morning and was 185/117. I said, "now?", and she said, "well not this minute". So I said, "like next week?". Nope, today. I looked like a deer in the headlights. I was totally not prepared at all for the babies to come- I hadn't even packed my bag. :o

So a couple hours later they rolled me into the OR and the girls were born. It was pretty surreal. We came home the following Sunday (I stayed an extra day because my BP was still not fabulous) and have been falling into a routine. The girls are great and not too fussy, which we are hoping isn't a fluke and is their personalities. DH has been amazing and we are really treating this as a team effort.

Congrats to all the newcomers to this thread!! I wish you all healthy pregnancies and babies!!

Just delurking to say a big congrats to Val! Great news!

Kim - congrats on your girls!

Eva- that's great news about him being able to stay home. When Samantha was in preschool last year, there were actually 5 or 6 SAHDs that would bring their kids to school, so hopefully he will find a good network of other guys to meet.

yes, I find this to be true... not many SAHDs when julia was in preschool 3 years ago, but now there are 3 or 4 at kate's preschool. I guess it could be the economy, not sure.

Val- Cranford was 4 on June 11. I can't believe he can be that old but it's true! He's very excited about "his baby" but I'm a little bit concerned about how he'll really take it considering he's been an only child for so long!

Kim- Congratulations and thanks for popping in with an update!

As for me- I had some strange (mild but definitely there) cramping on Tues. Called the nurse who said it sounded like I needed to be drinking more water. Probably true and it only lasted a day. Has anyone else experienced anything like that? I'll be 25 weeks tomorrow!

Hi to everyone who delurked. :)

Paige, are those Braxton-Hicks? I never had them but the drinking water advice made me think of that. Braxton Hicks contractions (http://www.babycenter.com/0_braxton-hicks-contractions_156.bc)

BB- congrats on seeing the heartbeat. Yay! Yes, I'm on #2 here and feel huge compared to my last pregnancy at this stage. Why I expected this pregnancy to be *exactly* like my first is beyond me, but I'm a little afraid. If I'm this big now, what am I going to look like at 9 months? Ack.

And welcome to all the newly outed. Glad to hear the AMA club has lots of members. :D

Hi everyone and welcome to those who are just joining.

Kim -- congratulations on the girls. I hope you're enjoying yourself and hanging in there.

As for me, I'm in that second trimester feel-good phase. I'm another who is AMA (will be a few weeks shy of 37 when DS arrives) but generally everything is going well. Definitely bigger in this pregnancy earlier on than with DS and wondering whether my maternity clothes will carry me through -- I hate to buy new clothing, but since I'm working up until the end I can't count on hanging out on sweatpants for the last two months. Hmmm...

Since I had pre-eclampsia at the end of my pregnancy with DS (who is now 5), I've really had to watch salt intake and weight gain with this pregnancy. Anything for a healthy baby, but it's a little tough with all of the holiday goodies around.

I hope everyone is feeling well.

Hi Everyone,
Just checkingin to see how everyone was is doing.

Quick question. For those of you already with child/ children. When do /did you tell them about the new baby and how??

valchemist
12-10-2009, 09:31 AM
yes, definitely bigger second and third times around.

I am stuck with the morning (all day) sickness here at 7 weeks.

about telling the other siblings... I plan to wait til I am done with the first trimester to tell my girls (4 1/2 and 8). however, this plan may not work since I will certainly be showing by that time. I have notes from my second and third pregnancies saying that I was showing by 12 weeks and 9 weeks respectively.

about your 2 year old, bridget (am I remembering that your name is bridget??) I wouldn't bother telling til maybe the last trimester. it is pretty confusing and hard to understand at that age, plus the waiting at that age makes it more difficult. that is when I would hope to tell MY two year old, however, I am sure the girls will be telling him about it LONG before that.

We are done, and are quite happy with our 3 little beautiful men. One of the biggest reasons I'm glad we're done with 3 is that I would hate for a 4th pregnancy surrounded by the "oh, she must be trying for a girl'', Because, even if there was the slightest OOOps to happen--I'd just want a healthy baby boy or girl.

Good luck to you all. Healthy and happy!

Thanks for the congrats. I have been so busy at work these past few weeks that I haven't had a lot of time to focus on being pg. (Occasionally I think "I wonder if I really am pg?!" but then I realize that I never got my period so I guess so!)

I'm also in a dilemma. I'm about to interview for a job on 12/22. Although I love my job and I'd probably be crazy to leave it, this other job *might* be a dream job. There are a lot of ifs (if I'd even get the offer, if it would pay enough to consider changing, etc). Then of course there's the whole pregnancy issue. Although I know legally they couldn't rescind an offer when I disclose the pregnancy, I wouldn't want to start off a work relationship on a sour note. Thoughts?!

Hope everyone is feeling well.

Terri, why are you posting at 5 am? ;)

I'm thinking that you're early enough along that most people wouldn't even know they're pregnant yet at this point. Of course you do know, but they don't need to know that, ya know? I would recommend a plan of blowing them away at the interview next week, working for them a few months and letting them realize how fabulous you are, and then, oh my, I do believe I'm pregnant - how about that? It'll probably get tricky when it gets time for maternity leave, since you probably won't have earned it yet (don't you have to be somewhere for a year first?), but if I remember correctly, didn't you just go back to work recently anyway?

I would justify it as you are too valuable for them to pass up on, even if it means being without you for a short period of time while you're on maternity leave. :)

Terri, I just wanted to delurk and tell you that I interviewed for a job when I was first pregnant - I would say I was around 11 weeks at the first interview. When the offer came in for the job I was 17 weeks and I told my boss after she offered me the position. I basically said that I would love to accept the job but I wanted her to know that I was 17 weeks pregnant. I outlined my plan for maternity leave (6-8 weeks depending on how I gave birth) and my desire to have this job. She didn't hesitate and reinforced her desire to have me take the job - so it worked out.

I would be up front about it and especially outline what you will plan to do about maternity leave since you won't qualify for FMLA.

Good luck! Amelia is only 4 months old and I can't wait to have another baby!:D

I am getting the opposite. When I tell people (who ask) that I'm 29 weeks, I get "Wow, you barely even look pregnant." Is that a nice way of saying you thought I was just fat??

Merry Christmas, all!

Linsley, I'm so sorry I somehow missed your reply until now. That is a good story! I had my interview and I think it went really well..now it's a wait and see. Glad to hear that your boss took the news so well.
