I just love poppies. Has anyone had luck growing them from seed or have you had better luck with a plant. I know it's past season for them but want some for next year. TIA.

I believe some types of poppy seed must be sown in the fall and bloom in the spring. Try www.burpee.com or www.nationalgardening.com or ask your local nursery or county extension service for varieties that do well in your area.

Another note on poppies, they do not like to be moved, so make sure you plant them where you want them. They usually die if transplanted.

I love the icelandic poppies, which are annuals here in Colo. They are smaller but have a longer bloom. I also have some "big" poppies --they are pretty but like all perennials, only last a little while. Their stems "bleed" when you cut them so you are supposed to sear the stem with a lit match to make them last longer. Also--I have a clump that someone gave me so you can transplant them. I would not try growing any perennial from seed--it might take a few years to get any bloom --just buy from a reputable nursery.

I do have poppies and they are quite gorgeous; but like others have said they do not bloom all that long and so I think something else would be a better choice.
I have so many other perennials that when my poppies fade it is not that noticeable. If I had a smaller garden, though, I would skip the poppies.

I love poppies, but haven't grown them in a wile. I grew them origianlly from seed from my mom's poppy plants. She said to sprinkle the seeds on the ground about this time of year & they'll come up next summer. Worked for me.
I then saved the seeds from the plants to sew in the fall, but forgot & now can't find the seeds. :(
