I was excited to find my September issue in the mail today. The brownies on the cover look delicious. After removing it from the plastic wrapper & throwing away the never ending "your subscription is about to expire notice" I started looking for tomorrow nights dinner....so far, I can't make up my mind. Just wondering if anyone received their magazine and what you are going to try.

Oh, nanadee, that's so cruel! Now we'll all be waiting by our mailboxes and boo-hoo-ing every day until our copies arrive! Sniff.
So what looks good? Give us a hint? http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/wink.gif

It isn't even half way through AUGUST yet!!! Do you live in Birmingham or something?
Anyway, I'm so jealous and now I will be chasing the mail man down everyday. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/wink.gif

Sorry, didn't mean to tease you. On the cover is a huge plate of "ooey gooey brownies" titles at the bottom of the cover are "Try South American sizzle for dinner tonight", You'll scream for this ice cream", "How to make a great pasta" and "Stand by your bran". There is a recipe for Plantains with Balamic-Basil glaze that might sound good if I knew what Platains were (any ideas?) & a few pages with lentil recipes. I just went thru it once, but nothing made me want to start planning dinner yet. I guess I need to go back thru. Let me know what you think when you get yours.

Nanadee, plantains are a denser, slightly starchier banana-like fruit. See my posting of a couple days ago to get an idea of ripeness, & uses of them in various stages of ripeness (courtesy of our "plantain expert" Vanessa). I, too, will be waiting with salivating breath for the September issue....

Nanadee --
Ooh! I'm so jealous! I've been bouncing around the country, and everytime I move, my issue comes later and later. Oh, well, I'm still working on August.
Anyway, you asked about plantains - here's what the Cook's Thesaurus had to say:
http://www.foodsubs.com/Photos/plantain.jpg
plantain = cooking banana = platano = platano macho = Adam's fig Shopping hints: These look just like large green bananas, and they're always cooked before eating. Substitutes: green-tipped bananas OR sweet potatoes OR breadfruit (especially for tostones) OR potatoes (especially if fried) Notes: For more information, see the Wegman's Food Market's page on Plantains, or see the section on Plantains in the Cooseman's Worldwide Specialty Produce page
Hope this helps.
Also: there was a plantain post floating around a couple of days ago. Something like "plantain question". You might also try a search on that.
Shirley
Wow! That's one big banana! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

That picture is HUGE! It makes my screen all funny! I hope my new issue is on the way! It does seem early for September, though. Some poor folks just got their August issues!

Thanks to all of you who responded to my Plantains question. And you just have to love the picture Shirley put on here. I brought my issue to work today and the brownie picture on the front cover has attracted alot of attention.
Thanks again!!!

Hey I work at CL and I haven't seen the Sept. Issue yet. And I have to go to a critique of it tomorrow.
A plantain centerfold! Now I've seen everything! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif That thing dwarfs the ones we ate last night!

Well that makes me feel better. Good luck finding a copy, John K.
I didn't know anyone got their CL issues early. That's got to be a first. Now, if they could only do that for those of us who see it in the market a week or more before ours arrives.
Is anyone out there from CL working on this?

Hi,
We haven't receive our Cooking Light "September" issue here in New Brunswick, Canada. I feel jalous that you did receive it. I would like to know what is good to cook, so when I receive it I will be able to go shopping for the ingredients.
Have a great day.

Holy Cow you guys - I was one of the ones who waited for ever and ever for my August issue, and now, I've already got September! Yippee!! And CL has definitely redeemed themselves from the humdrum August issue...
For those of you waiting, I'll list a few of the recipes that caught my eye!
But Beware....it's like I'm telling the ending of a movie here, so if you like suspense and don't want to know what's coming, don't read this!!
Fruity Tuna Salad Pita Sandwiches (these looked really, really good to me)
The entire section on Latin Cooking - including Churrasco with Chimichurri Sauce and Grilled Sweet Potatoes with Orange-Chipotle glaze, Grilled Tuna with Rain Forest Glaze and Plantains with Balsamic-Basil Glaze
An entire section on lentils - Curried lentil-Spinach Salad with Shrimp, Roasted Red Potato and lentil Salad with Dijon dressing plus many others
German Chocolate Bundt Cake
An entire section of cooking pasta properly, plus recipes for that perfectly cooked pasta - I liked the looks of Farfalle Carbonara and Grilled Summer Vegetable Lasagna and Ziti with Tuscan Porcini Mushroom Sauce
Lightened Spinach and Artichoke Dip!!! Looks outstanding!!
Spicy Soba Noodles with Chicken in Peanut Sauce (I love Soba noodles)
A section on Greek "meze" - kind of the word for appetizer - including Feta omelette with Breadcrumbs (this looks fantastic - probably the first thing I'll make)
Then a whole section on hot sandwiches - including Monte Christo sandwiches, and Greek Meatball pitas - MMMmmmmm
Then a section that doesn't interest me in the least - it's called "Taste of America", and it's all recipes using typically American refined food like white bread and Velveeta - YUCK. There is also a recipe for Ooey-Gooey Peanut Butter-Chocolate Brownies (cover recipe) that looks terrific, but it uses devil's food cake mix, something I never have on hand, so my husband was disappointed that I couldn't go straight to the kitchen and start baking them when he saw the picture on the cover. Oh well. But they do look good.
Then there's a section on ice cream, ice cream makers and sorbets. Tequila-lime sorbet anyone?
And lastly, a section on desserts for two. Smaller scaled dessert recipes for just two people. Nothing jumped off the page for me in that section, but I'm sure it will interest someone!
Anyway, that's it - now you know what to look forward to! Hope no one has to wait too much longer - and thanks CL, for making it so much fun to cook! Always something new to look forward to!

Ahhh! I can't wait now! I LOVE spinach and artichoke dip!!!! I am jealous. I love to sit down and read the new issues. I hope I get mine this week. I just bought some lentils, too. Thanks for sharing, I'm the kind of person who usually flips to the end of the book to make sure my favorite character lives, so of course, I could not resist reading about the new issue.
