Who knew there were so many varieties....I'm trying to taste them all (what the stores carry here).
Does anyone have a favorite variety?

Seckles - look like minaiture pears -- very cute, petite & small. Early Fall fruit through about December-ish, I think.

One of my absolute favorite desserts is ripe bosc pear slices with a dab of good brie. Mmmmmmm....

Are these also called sugar pears?

I'm not a big pear fan (except in desserts :o) but I do like the crispness of Asian pears - none of the mealiness that so many varieties have.

Apparently so, because their sugar content is the highest. Learned something new today, jpap :)

I used them a couple of Falls ago and found out about them because of a Martha Stewart recipe.

I also did not spell the name correctly the first post. Should be spelled Seckel -- not Seckle.

I tried some red ones last year that I thought were excellent. I think they were called Crimson pears? I haven't seen any this year around here.

Canice, I like the crispness of Asian pears too. Almost like a cross between a pear and an apple.

I second Bosc pears. They have a hint of spice/pepper that other pears to not have. Stewed with cloves and served with vanilla ice-cream, hmmmm!

Anjou pear is my favorite, specially when it is not fully ripe and then keep it in the refrigator for 2-3 days, it's so yummy and soft.
