A search shows one old thread, and thought there might be new info out there.

I'd like to get DH a bike trainer for his birthday, but know very little about them, other than you can choose a magnetic model or a flow (is that the right word?) model. Any information and/or input on either type of trainer would be most appreciated. I'd like to show up at my LBS with at least a little bit of knowledge;)

TIA,
Sheila

I have a Cycleops Magneto which I am perfectly happy with. Many like the Fluid2 (that's the word you're looking for) as it's slightly less noisy but it's also signficantly more expensive. I've heard good things about Blackburn and Kurt Kinetic as well.

We have a CycleOps Fluid and love, love it! We got it at a deep discount at a cycling event. DH also has rollers, but really prefers the trainer.

Be sure to check out Bycling Mag online. I would expect them to have some good reviews & pros/cons of different models

Thanks for the input, Robyn and Susan! I am headed to the LBS later this week, so will go armed with these brands and recommendations.

One thing I forgot to ask is: is one type (magnetic or fluid) easier to set up/take down than the other? I envision DH using the trainer in different spots depending on temp/weather/etc, so that's a factor in my purchase.

Thanks again!
