I read the other day to make sure you wash all bedding in HOT water to kill dust mites. It seems cold water and warm water does not do the job. They are a main irritant to me. I have special covers for all my pillows. Just washed all the bedding in hot water, but suddenly realized my twin comforters were excluded.
I have two twin down comforters on our king bed ( no pulling from DH) I have twin duvet covers which I also wash in hot water, but is there a dust mite cover that I can also cover the base comforter with? Can't wash down comforters) I am trying to get as dust mite free as possible.
I have looked in several catalogs such as cuddledown and the company store, but don't see anything there. Any other suggestions?

Joan:
This catalog comes highly recommended by our allergist. I have bought the mattress covers and pillow covers from them. Here is a link to some other protective covers:

Thanks for the info on ths web page. They have a comforter cover and that could go under the duvet cover. Of course one more things to wash and stuffing the comforter twice, but if it means no dust mites, sounds good. I tried the mattress cover once and had to take it off since it made DH prespire heavily. I notice the covers on the pillows do not "breathe" too much and I prespire from those, but I put up with it and do the best I can.
You practically end up living in a bubble. You are not supposed to have wall to wall carpeting which is not an option for us especial when we stay in SC. I have no control over the carpets.
This web site was definitely a find for me.

Which mattress covers have you tried? They do sell several that are not at all plastic-y. My son's feels like a silky sheet to me. And I do put a traditional mattress pad on top of that (which again, is another thing to wash though).
I can't tell the allergen pillow protectors from my regular ones unless I check the tag.
We removed my daughter's carpet (it needed it anyway) and replaced it with laminate. When pollen season comes I will hope to see some improvement too. We also had to say good by to lots of stuffed animals!

Did you buy the pillow protectors from the same catalog? I bought mine at BB&B and though not really inexpensive, maybe not the best breathable ones I could use. I guess I will have to splurge.
I read a small note on health and asthma several weeks ago which stated that you must wash all your bedding in hot, not cold or warm water to kill mites. The cold and warm temps are not enuf. So I have been doing that and have noticed a change with breathing at night.
The mattress cover was gotten quite a few years ago so perhaps the present day ones are a products of more advanced production technology and knowledge of working with asthma.
I am a stuffed animal collector. Just got a moose for DH for Valentine's day and a turtle for my DD's D. Can't resist them. I even have a scottie, moth eaten to be sure, that my Mom bought me from FAO when I was 3.
Ready for the next storm? State College has barely cleaned up the side roads from Saturday and there are cars in the parking lot (we have a garage) that are still not dug out.
