My husband and I will be in New Orleans in October and are looking for some restaurant recommendations. We love all types of food (especially spicy) and are really interested in trying some local cuisine. I have been to New Orleans before but it was years ago. Any suggestions?

Thanks!
:)

I have a friend who used to live there and I was there for a conference about 2 years ago. We ate at a place called the Bon Ton Cafe. It was nice, had turtle soup, I'd never had that before. I'ts near the French Quarter, but on the other side of Canal. I want to say it's on Magazine, but I could be wrong. The name is right though. We also went to K Paul's (Paul Prudhome's) in the quarter. Both were very good. About $30-40 per person with wine.

Here are some links to other discussions about NO.

We were just there this summer and revisited K-Paul's - very, very, good. NOLA was even better, but more busy and less intimate. Le Meridien still has an excellent Sunday brunch.

It seems like there were other discussions, but I had a hard time even finding these! What's up with the search function???

Thanks so much for the info. I'm sure we will be eating our way through the French Quarter. Anyone else out there with other suggestions - any great locals places? What about places for Jazz at night? I know its everywhere but are there any bars we should definitely hit? I have to get some fun in before the convention starts.

New Orleans is a great city for eating. There was some Tom Robbins book that gave the best discription of NO I've ever heard. It went something like

"When you enter the city of New Orleans, something warm and wet starts humping your leg and only stops when you begin eating..."

Food in NO isn't the healthiest in the world but a little indulgence now and again didn't hurt anyone.

Mothers in the Central Business District (a few blocks from the quarter) has great po-boys. The Acme Oyster House has great fried seafood.

There's a restaurant/bar in the Quarter called Napolean House. It was built to house Napolean who they were going to rescue from exile. Unfortunately, the plan didn't come off due to Napolean's death but it's a great, very atmospheric place to have cocktails late at night.

There's a French bakery/cafe, La Madeline I believe is the name, right at Jackson Square that has great pastries, quiches, etc.

There's also a place in the Quarter called the Gumbo Shop that's fairly touristy but does have good food.

I've heard recent reports from folks who went to Emerils' places that it was a little dissapointing... I've never been to Commanders Palace but have heard good things about it.

And don't forget Cafe du Monde for benignets!

P.S. Do be careful in the Quarter late at night and do not go to the cemetaries unless you're with a tour group.

I would suggest a place called Henri's. The BEST Italian food. It is a small little place that seats maybe 40.

Petunia's is a wonderful restaurant....a few years ago I was there for Jazz fest and we came upon it quite by accident....if you like seafood...they have the best seafood crepes!!!

And, of course, any of Emeril's restaurants are worth the money!!!
