Here was my first attempt at a flourless brownie, and it was very good. I did make some changes (for convenience due to what I had on hand) to the recipe which I listed beside the ingredients I changed. The recipe is from a blog called Elena's Pantry, link here (http://www.elanaspantry.com/brownies/).
Almond Butter Brownies
1 (16) ounce jar salted almond butter, smooth roasted
2 eggs
1 ¼ cups agave nectar (I used honey)
1 tablespoon vanilla
½ cup cocoa powder
½ teaspoon celtic sea salt (I used regular table salt)
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 cup dark chocolate chips 73% (I used Hershey’s Special Dark)
1. In a large bowl, blend almond butter until smooth with a hand blender
2. Blend in eggs, then blend in agave and vanilla
3. Blend in cocoa, salt and baking soda, then fold in chocolate chips
4. Grease a 9x13 pyrex baking dish
5. Pour batter into dish
6. Bake at 325° for 35-40 minutes
I made a half recipe and used a stand mixer for making the batter. It is definitely a repeater! It has a fudgy interior and a crisp exterior, my favorite for brownies.

Wow, that sounds good. How much almond flavor did the almond butter give it?

The uncooked batter had a strong flavor of almond butter, but it was toned down when the batter was cooked. I could detect an almond butter taste in the final product, but the chocolate and cocoa (a bit bitter) were also strong flavor components. DH couldn't identify an almond butter flavor at all in the final product. Overall, if you hate the taste of almond butter, you may want to pick something else. The discussion in the link provided above talks about people using peanut butter or sunflower seed butter with good results.

I'm a little embarrassed to say I've never tasted almond butter, but I love almonds. Sounds like something I need to do!

don't be embarrassed-- but it is delicious, as is cashew butter. i like sunflower butter as a peanut butter sub, but not everyone does.
tJ's carries them all, i think.

sugaree, don't be embarrased, but run, don't walk to the nearest store that carries it!:D
TJ's is also now carrying an almond/flaxseed mix butter.

TJ's and whole foods both have their own brand of Roasted Almond Butter and they are both amazingly good (and both the same price here where I am).
I absolutely LOOOOVE Almond Butter!!!
I love the idea of this recipe, makes me want to try it, but a whole jar of AB for one recipe... wow, I love it so much I don't want to spend the whole jar at once!:p
Plus it would be a lot of brownies for just the three of us. Do you think I could halve the recipe and bake in an 8x8 dish?
Thanks for sharing it sounds and looks so good, I really want to try it sometime!

Yes, I cut the recipe in half and used 1 cup of almond butter for it. I baked it in an 8x8 glass pan. I read in the blog entry that they freeze well (and taste good frozen!) if this makes too many.

Bumping...
The brownies were frozen, thawed, and taken to a party last night. They kept their great fudgy texture even after freezing. No one really cared that they didn't have any flour, but they all cared that the brownies were GOOD.
Almond butter can make these brownies expensive. However, our Costco carries unsalted MaraNatha almond butter at $6 for a 26 ounce jar. I saw a much smaller jar of another brand for $13 at a grocery store. So, if you don't want to spend too much on these brownies, check out the discount sellers.
I'm mixing up another batch this afternoon!

I think there are threads here (I swear I posted to it) using
cocoa powder and bean flour.
YUMMY and you get more fiber.
How much do you think would be OK to cut back on sweeteners to cut the carb count?

Wow, awesome deal with your almond butter!
I get mine (either TJ's or whole foods brand) for $4.99 for a 16 ounce jar, however the MaraNatha is about $13 like you mentioned for a 16oz.
I will check my discount store, I never actually thought of looking there, I use BJ's which is the closest. Thanks for the tip!
As soon as I get a new jar I want to try the brownies, I don't have 1 cup on my jar right now! I love that stuff:)
