What cut of meat should I buy when a recipe calls for beef tips? I would like to use something very lean if possible. Thanks in advance for your reply.

I'm not sure what cut of meat beef tips come from. My grocery store (HEB in Texas) has the meat packaged and labeled as "Beef Tips" usually. If they don't, I generally use stew meat that is cut in large chuncks or precut beef for kabobs. Hope this helps.
Javaone &NydiaC,
I think Beef tips is or are just meat cut in strips about 1/4 inch thick or less.
I think you could get a sirloin steak or some other steak you prefer and cut into strips and cut the steak to the length you want, (bitesize is good, and call it Beef Tips with great safety.
Hope this helps.

javaone,
Beef tips come from the tip (or knuckle) section of the cow which is located between the round and flank. So tip steak, sirloin tip or cube steak would be cuts of meat from that section.
