What is the intended role of the undershirt in the male wardrobe? I have a small boy and a husband who, while wonderful in many ways, is pretty useless when it comes to clothing that is not jeans and t-shirts. :)

Primarily it protects clothing from permanent "man stink". The sweat (odor and color) are absorbed by the undershirts and protect the outer shirt. It also can make lighter color shirts from being as see-through.

See, I knew it was something logical like that. :) I'm hoping to raise our kids with a better sense of dress then their parents.... Thanks!!

Also, some guys just find it more comfortable than their regular shirt. My older son always wears a white t-shirt under all of his regular T-shirts. Must be a comfort thing to him (or he likes the additional warmth ;) ). Younger son nevers wears one...but he runs hot.

Well as we all know, men sweat more than women does and that's the purpose of an undershirt. It absorbs all of those nasty sweat and well let's face it, it makes them look cool.

Undershirts also protect outer clothing from deodorants that cause permanent stains. Both men and women use deodorant.

Wonderful. :) I'll have to see if I can get him into the habit early.

And my DH always wears a Tshirt under his regular shirts (not just dress shirts) because he runs so hot. He doesn't like to sweat through his regular shirt, so prefers to wear the undershirt too.
