Maelynn!! I need a Computer Exorcism! I have demons!

Maelynn, my computer is possessed! :eek: Do you hear me?? POSSESSED !! ...nearly every time I log onto the CL board on my home computer I get a pop-up window telling me I have a private message. When I click on 'open a new window', half the time I see nothing there...now new message at all. I cancel and go back to reading the board, and within two minutes I've got another pop-up window telling me that once again, I have a new message! This can go on for an hour, popping up every 2-5 minutes! I feel like someone is teasing me! I get a warm fuzzy 'cause I think someone is sending me a private message, when 90% of the time it's a pesky demon just toying with my feelings. :mad:

What is the best thing to use for Computer Exorcism?? Garlic cloves in a circle around the monitor haven't done much yet except give me even MORE warm fuzzies!! :D

What do I do about the demons! I'm scared...

I had the same problem. I was getting the messages everytime I opened the board or came back to it from a thread. I finally deleted every private message, current and old, turned off every notification related to private messages, closed the BB, returned, restarted my computer -- eventually, I got rid of them. I wish I could tell you what did it for sure. Good luck.

Well, we've not yet fully developed our demon fighting recipe, Jewel. But we're on it.

I would also suggest taking the steps that Beth did. Deleting all of your previous private messages. It could be the software isn't recognizing that you've read all of them.

Also, if you haven't done this already, you could always select "no" next to the "Pop up a box when you receive a Private Message?" option in your Edit Options area of the User CP.

But I would try deleting your messages first. Or, delete them one at a time. Perhaps it is one particluar message that is causing the problem.

Sorry that's all the help I can give right now but I'll look into it more.

Thank you Maelynn!! I had already deleted all of my messages thinking that's what happened, that it didn't recognize that I'd read some of them, but I'd get the pop-ups even with an empty window! :eek: Started me lookin' over my shoulder..... :confused:

Get busy on that recipe, huh?? Lots of garlic please! :D

Jewel, sounds like you're going down the same path I did...you're at the point now where I selected no to the pop-up window. I still get an email, so I know to check when a mesage comes in.

I WOULD do that...but the email message comes to my WORK email address and the possessed computer with the Demon Pop-Up Window is on my HOME computer! (sigh!) Looks like I gotta live with the little devil for awhile or I'd miss my PM's by a day or two!! :D
