Would it be gross?

I was thinking about making a batch this weekend. I thought maybe I would make a big batch and freeze it, but I don't know if it would be any good once it thawed out.

What do you think?

Any thoughts would be appreciated!

I never even thought to freeze hummus. I've never seen it frozen. I think freezing would change its consistency. Let me know if you experiment. :)

Definitely too early in the morning for me...I read Can you freeze humans? I was thinking 'Sure you can, but you might not be outta prison in time to see 'em thaw!!' :D

I read the question as "humans" instead of "hummus" too!

I freeze it all the time (although I'm too lazy to make my own, I buy the pre-packaged kind at the store) and I've never had any problems with the consistency or flavor changing. I usually don't keep it in the freezer for more than a few weeks at a time, so I don't know if freezing it longer will cause it to change any.

Again at the risk of sounding like a TOTAL dork, I know what hummus IS but I have no idea what it tastes like or what it's supposed to be used for...in my opinion, it looks like it would be really good at filling the nail holes in my living room walls. ;)

I know (think?) that it's made from garbanzo beans/chickpeas but I have no other real knowledge of the stuff! Is there a reason I should try it? Is it healthy? Lowfat? Lowcal? Full of some vital nutrient that I should have more of in my body? Or is one more thing that you people are gonna get me addicted to only to find out that I can't eat very much of it because it'll make my thighs grow and my arteries harden. (Whoever got me hooked on Roasted Soy Nuts I'll get even one of these days...)

What is hummus like???

I like it as an alternative to salsa - for chips. I have had a roasted pepper or garlic flavor, with sun-dried tomatoes, etc. I just like it as a chip-dipper. I would think its pretty low fat, the recipe I have I don't believe calls for any oil or other fat. It's just yummy!

Jewel,

You're right, hummus is made from garbonzo beans. Depending upon how it's made, it's actually pretty healthy. It's usually made with garlic, citrus lemon/lime juice, and whatever else you feel like throwing in.

I like to toast pita bread, cut it into wedges, spread the hummus on it and top with a tomato slice and a black olive - YUM!

It's also good for just sticking your fingers in and then just licking off (shhh...don't tell my grandmother I do this).

Jewel,

LOL at freezing humans. After my day today, I have a few I wouldn't mind freezing!

...it's great in wrap sandwiches and on grilled cheese.

When we go camping we make hobo or camp pies with hummus, tomatoe, green onion and cheese. YUMMY!

The only non-fat ingredient in traditional hummus is tahini (sesame seed paste). It is a key ingredient so leaving it out for your hummus savy guest is generally not an option. I usually cut it down from the 1/4 called for in the recipe to a couple of Tbsps. I have not had any complaints yet. If y'all like hummus.....you should try Baba Ganouj. Its basically the same ingredients as hummus, except instead of chick peas......you use roasted, pureed eggplant.

I think they both freeze pretty well.

oops.....its early.....what I meant to say.....is that the only fatty ingredient in traditional hummus is tahini......the rest is low/no fat. Sorry....didn't mean to change your perspective on hummus. I NEED COFFEE!!!
