I just thought I'd post a couple of crockpot recipes my family loves.
Chuck Roast BBQ
I got this one out of SL magazine years ago and have been making it ever since.
2 to 2 1/2 lb boneless chuck roast
2 med onions chopped
3/4 cup cola
1/4 cup worcestshire sauce
1 TBL. apple cider vinegar
2 cloves garlic minced
1 tsp. beef boullion
1/2 tsp. dry mustard
1/2 tsp. chili powder
1/4 tsp. ground red pepper
1/2 cup ketchup
2 tsp. butter
hamburger buns
Combine roast and onions in slow cooker.
Combine cola and next 7 ingredients; reserve 1/2 cup in the refrig. Pour the rest over the roast and onions.
Cook, covered on high for at least 6 hours or until very tender; drain and shred roast. Keep warm.
Combine reserve cola mixture, ketchup and butter in a saucepan. Cook over medium heat until thoroughly heated. Pour over roast and stir gently.
Serve on buns with coleslaw.
Here is more a spicy mexican version, I found this one on another cooking board a couple of years ago.
Shredded Beef
1 chuck roast ( 2 to 3 lbs)
1 cup water
2 cans El Pato Mexican Tomato Sauce ( yellow can is milder than green can)
1 envelope of onion soup mix
2 tsp. cumin
Place the roast in the crockpot. Pour water into the crockpot.
Whisk the other ingredients together. Pour over the top of the roast. Cook on low at least 8 hours. The longer it cooks the easier it is to shred.
Serve with tortillas or pita bread, shredded lettuce, chopped tomatoes, shredded cheese and sour cream. It's delicious!!

Thank you for the crock pot recipes. I received one as a wedding gift a few months ago and it remains in its box! My specialty as a single gal was Chicken Voila from the frozen food section, so I look forward to using your recipes!
Marian- Thanks for the recipes! Now that fall is getting closer, with school starting, and the various fall sports, I use my crock pot a lot more due to time constraints. These both sound great!:)

Is it safe to leave a crock pot on while you are gone all day?
I just want to ensure it will be safe or I will be thinking about the entire day I am away from the house.
Thanks!

I don't have a crockpot! Today I saw an ad from Macy's for a crockpot for $19.99. It is a Rival 3 1/2 Quart (Model #3735).
There is just the 2 of us, and I wonder if this is the best size to get. If you all think this is a good deal, let me know, and I will start copying all the crockpot (tried and true) recipes!

There is also just two in our family, but we opted for a bigger crockpot. The only reason for the decision, however, was that the bigger one was non-stick and came out of the appliance for easy cleaning! We rarely have a recipe that fills the entire crockpot. But the pull out option is an extremly nice feature!

Whatever size you get, be sure to get the kind that the crock comes out for cleaning. I got one at Macy's...the oval kind. I like the shape better than the round one I have. Matter of preference.

If you haven't used your crockpot yet, I would stay home the first time it is being used. Other than that, I always leave the house when mine is in use and have never had a problem. The smell when you get home is always wonderful as well.

Thanks for the recipe! Let me know if you like other recipes from that book, it sounds interesting.
I have never done a whole chicken in the crockpot, but plan on trying soon.

I agree to get one with a removable pot in the center. I had the other kind and hated it. I have had a round one and when that died, bought the oval one and like that much better. Remember if you get a bigger one (I think mine is 5 1/2 qts), you will have more leftovers. ;)

Please read the review of this crockpot on amazon.com before you buy it. I believe this is the crockpot where the outside gets hot enough to burn you. I'd look for a better insulated crockpot.
Lots of good crockpots are available in yard sales, so if you're not sure how much you'd use one, look there for a bargain first, try it out, and move up when you're certain it will earn its' counter space in your kitchen.
That said, I love my crockpot, and second what others have said re get one with a crockery insert. Personally, I like one big enough to hold the size roast I like to cook for our family, and often fill it and share the excess with our daughter's family. She loves coming home to a completed meal picked up at our house on her way home from work!

I always put the broiler pan under my crock pot before I leave in the morning. I worry that the liquid might overflow the top, it never has, but I still do that for my own peace of mind.

I have a 3 1/2 qt. Rival for the two of us. It is oval, with the insert and I love it. The crockpot instructions tell you that recipes will not turn out well if you do not fill at least 1/2 the crockpot. Unless you want a ton of leftovers for two, I find this size to be great.
