I am trying to get Dh 19 year old grandaughter her license and am confused about the process. I keep trying to stop at the DMV to ask but the line is always out the door.

She told me you take the written test after the driving test. DMV did not tell us she needed to take the written test when she signed up for the driving test, I would think you need the written test passed before the driving test.

As for insurance, I called the my insurance co and they said she is covered for liability for the test.

DH is questioning how she gets her acutal license if she has no insurance. We are only going thru this process now even though she wont have a car or be driving so it is out of the way and to be done with it.

TIA

Laurie

Check out the CA DMV website at: http://www.dmv.ca.gov/dl/dl.htm

It should have the answers to your questions there.

You take the written test first, then make an appointment for the driving test. Here (www.dmv.ca.gov/dl/dl_info.htm#2500) is the DMV page about applying for a driver's license. You can click on the insurance requirements. If she is using your car, she needs to show that the vehicle itself is insured. After all, you don't have to own a car to get a license, and you won't have insurance if you don't own a car. Good luck, hope she passes the first time!

ETA: Does she have a license from another state? If this is her first license, I think they will only give her a learner's permit when she passes the written test.

If she has a license from another state, I think she just needs to take the written test (at least that was all I needed to do 30 years ago when I moved to CA).

If she doesn't have a license at all, she needs to take the written test first, she then gets a learner's permit (I think), and then she would have to take the driving portion of the test.

If you can't get answers from DMV, try calling a local driving school and see if they can help you
