I can't eat walnuts because they irritate my mouth and throat, but I love recipes with walnuts (especially main dish and salad recipes). Does anyone know of a good substitute? How are pecans? I have found pecans to do fine in baking but I'm not sure they are hearty enough to substitute for walnuts in other recipes. I'd love to hear other people's thoughts.

You could try substituting pine nuts. I've often seen the two interchanged in pesto recipes.

My vote would be for pecans, actually, since they are so similar to walnuts. If you're worried about the flavor, I would toast them a little bit before using them since that releases more flavor from the nuts. Pine nuts are very good in entrees as well, they're especially good toasted.

When substituting walnuts, pecans hazelnuts you can use one or or the other. If you are avoiding nuts all together use browned rolled oats. Pine nuts can be used as substitutes but in certain recipes the flavor might be too different.
