View Full Version : Question: Best Substitute for Red Wine Vinegar?

Hi All! I'm coming here knowing there will be SOMEONE with expert advice to share!

I am making "Clementine Salad with Spiced Walnuts & Pickled Onions" from CL December 2000. To make the pickled onions, you have to boil red wine vinegar, water, & sugar, then pour it over the red onions. I need 1/2 cup red wine vinegar and only have about 1/4 cup. Given that I HAVE to make this tonight and don't have time to run to the store, what do you all suggest would be the best substitute for the remaining 1/4 cup red wine vinegar?

Things I have on hand include:
White Wine Vinegar
Rice Vinegar
Apple Cider Vinegar
White Vinegar
Red Cooking Wine
Sherry Cooking Wine
White Cooking Wine
Mirin (Rice Wine)

I'd use the white wine vinegar -- it's going to be the most similar.

I have made something like this before, and I think I would just use the white wine vinegar for the other 1/4 cup.

Wonderful! That was my first thought as well, but I was wondering if I'd somehow be missing some important flavor and should throw in red wine with it or something. But I think two votes for white wine vinegar is enough for me! Off to finish making my salad!
