I do not like mayonnaise. Is there something I can use as a substitute when recipes call for mayonnaise (and not salad dressing either)?

Hi! I don't like mayo either.
Sometimes you can substitute yogurt (plain).
It depends on the recipe-what did you have in mind?

Here are some of my replacements:
Mustard (dijion or what not)in things such as Chicken salad, deviled eggs, etc.
On salads: sometimes I do nothing at all, but when I'm not in the mood for a "dry" salad I do vinagrettes, add a juicy item, such as sliced olives, or use low fat cottage cheese.
In dips, I'll use sour cream.
If it's a condiment...I forgo it all together!
If it absolutely requires mayonnaise...I won't eat it!
Actually, it's not so bad. Not liking Mayonnaise cuts a lot of calories from our diet automatically!

Wow, I thought I was the only person in the world who disliked mayonnaise! I usually just leave it out or don't make the recipe. In fact, one of my friends used to make me a separate portion of her famous macaroni salad without the mayo, and it was delicious plain. As for dips, I prefer vegetable-y dips like salsas or mashed beans.

I detest mayo! I used to work at a Subway in college, and I would cringe when customers came in and asked for extra mayo on their subs. So gross! The mayo came in big plastic containers, and we'd have to cut a hole in the bottom of the container and squeeze the mayo out into small plastic bottles. I would end up with mayo all over my shirt half the time. Yuck. My coworkers would give me such a hard time about it, because most of them felt that the mayo Subway used was the best mayo in the world (I also refused to eat the white processed American cheese, which I got flack for as well, being from Wisconsin).
The only time I will eat it is in potato salad, but the flavor of onions and mustard has to mask the mayo taste. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

Thank you all for your recommended substitutions for mayonnaise. I had no idea there were so many of us.
I have subscribed to Cooking Light mag. for several years and enjoyed many of their recipes but...I am a first timer on the CL BB. What a good source of information and also for some LAUGHS. I'll be using this site often!

Welcome, CJM. I just love this BB. I have learned so much in the past month or so that I've been on here. I too do not like mayo- I will eat it IN things, but certainly never on a sandwich and not if I can identify its taste. You are not alone!
I make a really good macaroni salad that uses a mix of mayo and yogurt. I think yogurt is probably your best bet as a substitute.

Nay nay! No freaks among us (at least on the mayo issue) Here's an interesting study for you. My parents divorced when I was very young, and I lived with my mother afterwards. My father moved out of state, and while we had a good relationship, we didn't visit each other enough to discover each other's little idosyncracies. One day recently I was talking to my dad on the phone about food, and we both started talking about Mayo. We discovered we had tons of the same weird food aversions including mayo. Now that is weird!
question: Is food like/dislike nature or nurture?
P.S. I would like to qualify my original anti-mayo statement. I do like mayo one way: One thin/transparent layer on the inner side of one slice of bread of a grilled cheese sandwich...pan fried in butter. Does that count?

Food likes and dislikes must be nature because I have three boys. One eats anything that doesn't move (except for broccoli), one prefers to be a vegetarian(and has been that way since he was very young) and the third is my picky eater, a plain meat and potatoes man(although, his paternal grandfather was that way, too) Or maybe it was the food I ate while I was pregnant...

That's an interesting thought- my half sister has the same exact food likes and dislikes as I do- no seafood, not too much meat, lots of pasta and cheese. My half brother is the same way, but my other brother and sister (we have the same parents) have their own tastes, which are totally different than mine. I think it may seem we inherit some likes/dislikes because of the food our parents gave us when we were younger. But then again, different people have different tastebuds. Hmm, wonder if there is some genetic link.
