Hi. Since some of you mentioned apple picking enclosed some general info
Applesauce:
McIntosh is tops, softens quickly and stays flavorful when cooked. Also good Jonathan, Macoun, Newton, Pipping, Rome and winesap

Baked apples
Rome Beauty is a favorite, it holds its shape when baked. Other choices: Courtland, Golden Delicious and Gravestein

Bread, cakes, pastries
Crispin, Golden delicious, Granny Smith, Rome beauty and Winesap. Keep shape and give a sweet/tart note

Pies, cobblers, crisps:
Golden Delicious. Other good ones Cortland, Granny Smith and Newton Pipping. Try combining them for texture and taste

Raw
Red Delicious (snacking and salads) Courtland (snow white when cut), Empire, Fuji, Gala, McIntosh & Winesap
For candy/ caramel apples try McIntosh or Macoun which stays crunchy under sweet coating

Other choice apples
Grimes-marvelous dessert apple

Vanessa,

Thanks for the info! I am always confused on which variety works best for which purpose. I have my favorites that I stick to (mostly Granny Smith and Braeburn, but I like a few others, too), and I am always hesitant to try something different for fear it won't be the right thing and I will have wasted my time and money. I am printing this out and will keep it for future reference. Thanks again!!

Thanks Vanessa! I believe we will be picking Macintosh apples along with peaches and nectarines. We pick a bunch and then keep them in a little fridge in the basement. I can't remember the exact temp to keep them at- might be around 32? They will keep for a few weeks this way.

My husband loves apples- he usually eats them everyday. He bought me the greatest little apple cookbook for Christmas two years ago, too, so I can bake him desserts. What a guy!

Hi MrsR...

32º is freezing, so you don't want to do that unless you want to freeze them...I would suggest around 50 degrees....

Hope that helps you!

Happy apple picking! I'm going to see if my husband will take me this year too (he likes it, especially because he gets so many good things from those apples, but it's a time factor). Anyhow, have fun, and it will be fun to hear what everyone's doing with their apples in the coming weeks and months.
