Where do you buy your candles? Online somewhere or in a store?
I am looking for a great candle retailer either online or not.
Any ideas? I need tapes....and votives and large pillars.

Christine,
Check out Yankee Candle Company and Illuminations. Both have actual stores as well as online stores, and both offer an incredible selection of scented and other candles.

I'm a huge Yankee Candle fan and order all the time from their online store. I've found one small store that carries them here, but their markup is incredible :(

I like the "Aromatherapie" line of candles from A. I. Root. I've seen them in boutiques, usually marked up in price quite a lot. The company makes lots of other kinds of candles too.
Here's the company website, with lots of information:

You can order their candles online from this website:

There is a home based company "Partylite" and they have GREAT candles. They are pricey, but they last a long time. You can host a party and get free candles, etc. They are based in Plymouth, Mass.
You can get more info at www.partylite.com
I've only been to one show, and am considering hosting one. I really loved the candles I bought.

Yet another Yankee Candle fan. Ever since I ordered custom labeled candles for my wedding favors, I've been hooked! They have a store in our mall (and almost every mall it seems lately) so I just buy candles there. Since starting my teaching career last year, however, I haven't bought a single candle... I received many wonderful candles as holiday and end of the year gifts!
I definitely prefer to buy in person, though, because you can smell before you buy. :)

I buy all of my candles from Illuminations (www.illuminations.com). They have fantastic service and selection. I am especially fond of their Fresh Air Pillar candles. I am all stocked up on their votives and tealights and tapers, etc., and I have a few of their scented candles. I have been happy with everythig I have bought there and highly recommend them. They even have free shipping for returns! They include a label for you to use to ship your return back.

I like the colonial candles of cape cod. Has anyone ordered these online? I need to look into this as entertaining season is beginning and I use a dozen at a time!

I personally can't handle Yankee Candle Co. When I pass their store, I have to cross over to the other side of the mall, the smell is so exhaustive. I have one vanilla candle in my home from Yankee. It's about the only scent that isn't so overpowering to me.
I am a Partylite junkie. I'm having a party on October 9th, and I have no idea why, because I have so many scents, candle receptacles, containers, snuffers, etc. from them, I can't imagine needing more. But there I go.
As funnybone said, their candles are very nice, albeit more expensive than what you would find at a craft store, etc. But they burn more evenly, the scent is subtle, yet appropriate, and they stand behind their products.
No, I don't work for the company. :D

kinziecandles.com has some really great candles, I especially like their lemon/cinnamon ones.

I love Yankee candles and I also have some candles from Partylites. Personally, I like the Yankee candles better. I found the Partylites candles to be overpriced- not that Yankee isn't expensive, I just found them to be a little less expensive.
That being said, please watch out for lead wicks in the candles. Very bad to burn them around children!!! Yankee and Partylites don't have lead wicks, but there are other brands out there that do. I bought some aromatherapy candles on line as part of a gift basket and they had lead wicks. Just a word of caution.

OK, I gotta be difficult, it's in my nature!! I bought a few Yankee Candles, and while the scent was OK, I hated the way the jar candles looked when they hardened back up after melting. All two-toned and icky looking. I was at the Puyallup Fair last year and was drawn to a booth run by Prairie Candle Company. www.prairiecandle.com The scents were Heavenly...'Irish Cream' is to die for, and our favorite...and 'Creme Brulee' was amazing! Very Coffee/Toffee scented. They have one called 'Cinfully Vanilla' which is a cinnamon-vanilla! YUM! I like homey-yummy scents more than fruity anyway, so these 'Sugar Cookie' type scents just throw me into overdrive! Anyway, the jars are gorgeous because they fill the lids with dried wheat and grass, very country looking. The scent goes ALL the way through the candle, and when it melts and rehardens, it still looks creamy like butter. No difference in color or texture.
I bought two jar candles that day, and we went nuts over them. I ordered online a month later and I've got about a dozen of them all through my house! I highly recommend these guys! They're out of Colorado, and every time I've ordered I've gotten great service! :D

I love Yankee candles...but I often complain that even though they burn for many many hours, I really can't smell the fragrance unless my nose if pretty much perched next to the candle.
I've never been to a Partylight party because I can never get past the high price of those things. PS...someone told me that some of their candles are the exact same ones as Colonial Cape Cod Candles. That's terrific...the local Hallmark store sells those. ;-)
I've just been introduced to a brand new line of candles though. As some of you may know, I just started selling products by Southern Living At HOME. They have only a select number of fragrances in the catalog for the holidays. I received two different candles in my kit. One is called French Vanilla. This fragrance is awesome. I sort of envisioned jumping into it and swimming....or dipping out a huge hunk to eat. ;-) It's wonderful. I also have one called sunflower...it also smells really nice...but nothing like that vanilla one.
My biggest surprise came when I lit one of them. I IMMEDIATELY smelled it. I walked outside to get the mail a little while later, came back inside about a minute later, and could even smell it at the door. That wonderful fragrance really was throughout my house.
Ever heard of soybean oil based candles?? I hadn't until these arrived. The catalog says: Earth friendly and environmentally safe, our candles are crafted from soybean oil to burn cleaner, longer, and cooler than petroleum-based paraffin candles. The soybean wax is water soluble, so you can remove it easily from glass and other surfaces.

Illuminations is my favorite. If you don't mind the occasional e-mail, you can get discounts by signing up for its online newsletter. I can't wait to buy the new chai scent!

I received an Illuminations candle as a gift and LOVE it - so fragrant! I didn't know about the e-mail list. Thanks, wonderwoman! I just signed up.

Are amazing! I have gone to all the sites and may just try them all. Make a small order at each site to rate them.
I am mostly looking for tapers that are dripless and smokeless and of course interesting candles for the season!

My DH has asthma, so I have (sadly) avoided the scented candles. If the aroma is subtle, it's not a problem. I had wondered if the aromatherapy candles would be less scented and safer in general. I saw some small ones at Wild Oats but they were very expensive and seemed very scented. For those of you that have used the aromatherapy variety, do you think they are less scented, or more?

Yes, Colonial Candle of Cape Cod makes Partylite candles. You can get these candles at some local retailers, but not all the same shapes and scents that PL sells. I've only seen CCofCC tapers in the stores, not the scented pillars and votives.
I used to sell them, but just didn't have the time to invest in a home business in addition to work. I really like their candles and have them all over my house.
