I wanted to make the non stop chilli and serve it in bread bowls and I was wondering what chilli beans are I looked in the bean section and there is no such thing. Would they be kidney or navy beans?
Also, Jen on another thread was looking for quick cooking barley. I have also been checking the supermarkets for these little gems and I cant find any other barley then pearl barley. Are these the same thing?
Thanks Terri

Hi Terri-Lynn,
About quick cooking barley, I had been looking for it for a long time because I have been wanting to try a scrumptious looking soup recipe from a Sunset magazine recipe annual. I went into a Whole Foods Market this weekend just to look around and stumbled upon it there. I don't go there frequently as I am not wealthy and I don't know if you have one near you or not.
Good luck with your bean question. Maybe Phoebe or Emily (the bean princess) will know.
PS :o :o duh, am I a ninny or what? They probably don't have Whole Foods in Canada. You may want to try a health food store.

I've seen Chili beans in the grocery stores around here (namely Giant). They are Pinto beans that have been flavored with chili spices and are contained in a thick sauce. Old El Paso makes them, and I know I have a can of another brand sitting in my pantry but I can't think of the brand and I'm at work. They are usually found in the Mexican section of the supermarket. Hope this helps.

Ditto what valeriek said...pinto beans in a sauce. Around here you just find them in with all the other beans, and every brand makes them.

I use pinto and kidney beans when making chili. Really, you could use any beans that you like. I've seen lots of different recipes using different beans. I don't use the canned ones but cook dried beans in the pressure cooker first then make the chili.
Hope this helps-
i usually use kidney beans when i make chili. i had never seen chili beans before either...but sure enough, there they were on a shelf. i read the ingredients and it was basically pinto beans in a sauce. i looked at a can of pinto beans, and the picture on the outside looked different from the picture on the chili beans can, though. if you can't find it at your grocery store, sometimes they can order it for you. sorry i don't remember the brand i bought...

Brooks is one brand that labels there beans as chili, with several different spice levels.

I believe you need to use actual canned chili beans in this recipe as the ones here are seasoned and using dried ones or regular pintos or kidney beans wouldn't have the proper seasoning. Of course you could add your own chili spices, but then this recipe would get less easy, which was the whole point, right?

So glad you pointed out my blunder! I totally missed the non-stop part of the original question. Beans with chili seasonings in cans. Now I get it. Next time I'll slow down and read.
Anyone out there if a can of this stuff, what else is listed in the ingredients?? Just curious.
Again, thanks.

FYI, since I dont like kidney beans, I use either pintos OR black turtle beans:)

Thanks everyone that has cleared up all my questions. I am going to keep looking for the chilli beans now that I know what I am looking for. If I cant find them in Canada I will have to guess on seasonings and add to the beans.
I had suggested to Jen to try the health stores for quick barley so I will venture there myself.
Thanks Terri
