First, if anyone ever decides this is a great idea.....just don't. LOL. It is a PITA to make. Turned out awesome but a lot of work.
DS LOVED it though so it was all totally worth it.

Wow! That's awesome- is that fruit leather/roll-ups as the sails? I love how it looks all ripply, like it's actually hanging there in the breeze.
Now you have me thinking about my DS's 8th birthday... I know you said it's a PITA, but I think he'd love a pirate party.

Yep, fruit roll ups attached to giant pixie sticks! They ended up working out really well.

Did you make up the idea or follow some directions? Do you have the directions somewhere?
Looks amazing. Thank you for sharing.

I drew a pirate ship free hand on paper to use as a pattern to cut the cake layers. But yeah, just did it, no directions. :)

Wow, that is spectacular!
I've been waiting for the reveal! That's great and you should be very happy with it, and I know DS was. I understand the "just don't" sentiment too. I probably would have said the same thing about a watermelon cake I made for my son at about the same age. Hope the rest of the party was a blast too.
I'm assuming the party was yesterday -- was that your son's actual birthday too?

Party was yesterday and he had a blast.
His actual birthday is Wednesday. He gets to pick whatever he wants for dinner and will open our gift to him. And his Grandma is coming for dinner as a surprise.

I send my best birthday wishes for another July boy. My oldest son's was Saturday (the big 18 this year) and my nephew's is Thursday. My younger son was almost July -- June 28th.

I, too, have been following the Great Pirate Ship Saga with much anticipation for the reveal:D. It did not disappoint!!!!! I know it was a total PITA, but I suspect your son will carry it as a life long memory and that is worth it all!!! Great job, mama!!!! :)
