Can anyone suggest a good frozen yogurt/ice cream maker? My husband has expressed an interest in making frozen yogurt and sorbet. I have no idea of what to even consider in making this purchase and would hate to buy one and have to buy another because I chose the wrong one. Also, I would love it if anyone had any lowfat and/or low sugar recipes to share.

Hi Britin, not too long ago, there was a whole discussion about the best ice cream makers. Everyone seemed to agree that cuisinart made the best one. Also check out "feedback from previous posts" by Anna. I think that was just yesterday. There seems to be a deal going on right now if you buy the Cuisinart from a certain place. I want to get one myself! Let us know how you make out.

I would suggest the Donvier ice cream maker. It is easy and inexpensive, about $50. You just have to place the canister in the freezer and mix up a batch of ice cream in a blender and in 20 min. you have delicious ice cream. Donvier also has a recipe book. To make fat free just substitue non-fat yogurt(plain or vanilla) or fat free sour cream instead of whole milk or cream. I use egg beaters for any eggs in the recipes. Good luck!
We have the cuisinart and we love it. We really enjoy making up ice cream flavors. This weekend we were having guests and I made the Brown Sugar Poundcake; and to go with it, I made the basic vanilla ice cream recipe that came with the maker. During the last five minutes I added 1/4 cup roasted chopped almonds and 1/4 cup coconut. I also substituted coconut extract for vanilla extract. It turned out to be very good with the cake. I used fat-free half and half and 2% milk for my fat counting guests.
The cuisinart is also easy to use. Just put the freezer bowl in the freezer (or leave it there), take it out and pour in the ingredients, wait 20 to 25 minutes and you have delicious ice cream that you know what the ingredients are.

Thank you Pat and Louise for the advice. That coconut and almonds sound really good. I know that my husband will love that idea since he has been hooked on this new retro Ben & Jerry's flavor (twisted something?)with almonds and coconut. There version, however, definitely has a lot more fat than we need to consume in one sitting.
Thanks again!!

I have a Krups and love it.
Here's a GREAT recipe that can be made low fat/fat free and sugar free.
12 Oz (by weight) peaches
2 cups Buttermilk (1-1/2% or fat free)
1/2 cup sugar (or sugar substitute equiv)
Remove peach pits. Process peaches (leave skins on) and sugar in food processor until finely chopped. Add buttermilk and pulse to blend.
Pour into ice cream maker. Done in about 20 minutes.
Also VERY good with blueberries or strawberries.
Leftovers freeze like a rock. Cut by hand into big chunks, and process in food processor unitl smooth.
I eat this all summer.

Thank you so much, Will! I hadn't even thought of buttermilk. I bet it is creamier than milk. This will be among the first that we try. It should be coming in this week.

Will,
Just wanted to let you know that I made your recipe with the peaches tonight and it was great!!! I can see why you eat it all summer. I used some sweet & low, but not too much was even needed because the peaches were really sweet. Thank you again.
I think I am going to try it with blueberries next or what do you think about watermelon, (too watery?).
Have a great week.
