I have a great set of Wusthof knives that I got for Christmas last year. Well, last night DH was helping with the dishes (a rarity) and he put two steak knives in the dishwasher and ran the cycle. This AM my knives have rust spots on them. I've tried washing them, but the rust has only diminished a little. How can I remove it?
TIA

Where is the rust? On the base? the blade-edge?
If the edge, can you just sharpen and hone?
I'm also curious if your dishracks have some uncovered areas (we had this with our old dishwasher)....the nylon coating (or whatever they use) at some point peels and the rust actually comes off of the racks. We have lots of plates that have this on the edge and I cannot get it off.
If that is the case, maybe time will help.
Finally, did you try rubbing it with some toothpaste? That's my miracle worker in the kitchen.

The rust is on the knife blade. I think I read somewhere that if DW detergent gets directly on it, or they rub against other utensils, rust can develop.
I'll try the toothpaste. I use that on my silver jewelry and it works like a charm.

You could try a magic eraser, just be careful and make sure you go with the grain or you might have some ugly marks on them.

I have a carbon steel knife that rusts on a foggy day. OK, not quite - but even a drop of water left on it is bad news. I place the blade on a cutting board so that it's secured by the bolster. Then I use a green scrubber and a little Bar Keeper's Friend and wash and dry it thoroughly.

Well, the toothpaste didn't work. I'll try Bar Keeper's Friend and the Magic Eraser. This is very frustrating.

When all else fails, steel wool should remove the rust. Then sharpen with a fine grit stone which you've lubricated with 3 in 1 oil.
Also, this behavior is a proven effective ruse by persons not wishing to ever be asked to do the dishes again. It works.

I'd use a little Bar Keepers Friend and a dish sponge.
Oops, just noticed that you said you were going to try this yesterday. How did it work for you?

And it worked!!:D I ended up using a little Soft Scrub with a heavy duty sponge and it took the rust right off. Thanks everyone for your suggestions.

TieKitty,
Sorry, a little late to the discussion, but use Bar Keepers as others were recommending. You really should not use Soft Scrub. Not good for knives. FWIW, no knives of any brand or cost should ever go in a dishwasher. Among other issues, the soap is much more acidic and abrasive than what we use at the sink. I'm a knife rep....
Glad you were able to fix your knife.

Ooh, you are? I didn't know that! What a very cool job. The knife I referenced above is a Bob Kramer. Not the line he did for Williams-Sonoma or SLT, but one he hand-forged in his shop, just for me! Before he started, he called my then-DBF and asked a few questions: how tall am I? Am I right handed or left? How big are my hands? etc. It was very cool, and he's a freakin' amazing guy (we went to a talk he gave at W-S).

Canice, yes, I am very familiar with Bob Kramer. You are a lucky girl if you got a custom knife. He is amazing!
Makes cooking all that much more fun.
Enjoy!

I think Coke will remove rust. I remember in school the teacher putting rusty nails in a jar filled with coke and they came out clean. I don't remember how long they stayed in there though.
