I am NEVER tired of thinking about food! :D:D:D Is it okay if I keep pawing through my "To Try" files and report on what I've made? Or will everyone groan and run for the Alka-Seltzer?

Cheers,
Phoebe

Hi, did everbody survive? Phoebe, thought of you yesterday.;)

We had a very nice buffet table set up and we ate out in the pool patio area by candlelight, with candles floating in the pool. After dinner, we all played a game called "Fact or Crap". It's a fun game for a lot of people. Even the kids loved it. Anyone else ever play it?

Phoebe, I am sure we would ALL love that. I just didn't want to put any pressure on anyone. It would be nice if anyone has a great leftover recipe they would like to share.

DH brought home some brussel sprouts the other day. Don't know how to describe it. Here is what Wickapedia says.

The edible sprouts grow like buds in a spiral along the side of long thick stalks of approximately 60 to 120 cm (24 to 47 in) in height, maturing over several weeks from the lower to the upper part of the stalk.

Never knew that.

Used them first for decoration Thursday. He put them in a tall, round, clear thing and now we are going to cook them today. Off to search for a good recipe. All suggestions welcomed. ;)

This is one of our favorites, Cookieee. I also like to halve them, then roast them with a little olive oil, salt and pepper.

Brussels Sprouts and Carrots with Almonds

If your Brussels sprouts are really big, you may want to cut them into six wedges.

YIELD: 4 servings (serving size: 3/4 cup)
COURSE: Side Dishes/Vegetables

Ingredients

1 tablespoon butter or stick margarine
1 1/2 cups julienne-cut carrot
3 cups trimmed Brussels sprouts, quartered (about 3/4 pound)
2 tablespoons minced fresh parsley
1 tablespoon sliced almonds, toasted
1 teaspoon brown sugar
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon black pepper

Preparation

Melt butter in a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Add the carrot; sauté 4 minutes. Reduce heat to medium. Add Brussels sprouts; sauté 5 minutes or until crisp-tender. Add parsley and remaining ingredients; cook 30 seconds or until the sugar melts, stirring constantly.

Thanks Mary Ann, don't have this one. I am leaning toward roasting them for something different. Hope you had a nice Thanksgiving.;)

My sister roasts them simply, and I love them that way. Had them on Thursday. I made creamed peas, she made creamed peas.
Mine were better.

The candles in the pool sounds beautiful! And, I love that game :) My family and I play a lot of games too and that's a hit around here!

I'm hoping to go through my to-try folder some more and I'll post if I do!

Hi Cheryl, thank you and belated HT to you.

To refresh everyone's memory (mostly mine:rolleyes:) here is what Cheryl made back in Game #26

finally made a recipe from Saveur- a bit busier than i thought!

loved loved this recipe- easy delicious and will be so much fun to play around with!

Green Beans and Tomatoes
Saveur November 2011

In so many green bean casseroles, the beans are cooked well past the point of mushy. Editor-inchief James Oseland lets his beans retain some snap; the richness here comes from luscious, cooked-downed tomatoes. Heat 1/4 cup olive oil in a 12" skillet over medium-high heat; add 10 cloves of garlic, roughly chopped, and cook, stirring often, until soft, about 2 minutes. Add 4 whole fresh or canned drained tomatoes peeled and crushed, and cook, stirring until broken down and soft. Add 2lb green beans, trimmed, and 1/2 cup water, and cover pan with lid; cook, stirring occasionally, until beans are soft, about 8 minutes. Remove from heat, season with kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper.

I used frozen haricot verts- thinking they would cook faster (i tutor on wed and get home late plus these were organic) and i needed to cook the beans for closer to 14 minutes til dh thought they were done. Still a bit of a bit to them so i was happy too. very yummy recipe!

thanks for posting the recipe cookieee! didn't think to do that- i think that next time i will use diced tomatoes- i used whole like the recipe called for and crushed but will try diced- trying to get the right consistency in the tomato part that makes both dh and i happy!

Hi All........Happy Thanksgiving weekend;) <yup I am a little late with the HT wishes>

No good recipes to share...just used T&T for Thanksgiving...and cut back on the size of the turkey and the number of sides cos it was just DH and me.

I think I'll make some turkey soup out of the carcass...but I have lots of meat to cut off still so I'm not sure if I'll get to that today or tomorrow. I am always searching for a new recipe for making soup from the bones...so I don't have anything to share there either.

Also I got a new laptop just before Thankx...my other was 6 y.o. and starting to give me some trouble. Just getting used to this keyboard...and Windows 7 and the new way of doing my email...work in progress here.

HI!!!!! How's everyone doing? No Susan, you weren't reported.:D (congrats on your new laptop, how's it doing?). We had a spammer that was taken care of. Sometimes, leaving something behind can be just as confusing as deleting a post. :D But thank you River Farm and Cafe Latte for getting rid of the spammer.

Last week (?) I said that we would start the new Alphabet game the last Thurday of the month. If it is ok with all of you, how about we start the new game in January?

I will give you a hint about this Thursdays game. We will be getting ready for Santa. See you then. ;)

Oooh, looking forward to the new game(s), now that my computer is at least semi-operational again. My computer tech (I call him "mine" now, because I've emptied my checkbook into his coffers) wiped my disk yesterday and started everything from scratch. I'm still feverishly resetting old defaults, trying to remember exactly what I had on my desktop before, replanning all my web-browser favorites, and generally making myself crazy. But at least my cookbook is up and running again, so I'm ready for a new game.

And once my stomach settles down from all of this, I'll be able to eat normally again. Would you believe my jeans have gotten looser during the past week?

Oh, and did I mention that the garage attendant who parked my car last Tuesday left the key in the ignition overnight and killed my battery? It's been interesting around here lately....

Cheers and sighs,
Phoebe

Hi Mary Ann, just wanted to let you know that I cooked the Brussel Sprouts last night. Took your suggestion and roasted them in the oven. Did half with just the olive oil, salt and pepper. The other half same way but added about a TB of Turmeric because it is suppose to be very good for you. We couldn't get over how delicious both types were. Thank you;)
