Heidi -- you mentioned on an earlier thread that your grandma had a great recipe for "a bowl of green". I looked at the other threads suggested, but the recipes didn't really sound like good old green chili like we eat here in Colorado it was mostly sauces for enchiladas. I would love your recipe. Thanks.

Sorry ewatkins, I was gone for the weekend and didn't see this until today. I'll have it for you shortly!

My grandmother is out of town, but this is her sister's recipe (her sister also lives in Alamosa, and always has), so I assume it is fairly similar.

Joyce Foote's Green Chili

1 lb. cubed pork
1/2 c. chopped onion
3 Tbsp. flour
green chiles--4-8 oz. depending on how hot you like it, chopped
2-3 c. water
16 oz. can tomatoes
1 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. garlic salt or 1 clove garlic
1 1/2 tsp. cumin

Brown meat with onion and remove most of fat. Add flour and brown for three minutes. Stir in tomatoes and chiles and add salt, pepper, and garlic salt to taste. Add water and simmer for five minutes. Serves 5 or 6. Use a little pequin for extra heat.

Ewatkins, I know you requested a meatless recipe, but I don't know how this would fare without the flavor that the meat provides. If I can get a hold of my grandmother's recipe I will also post it.

This looks perfect!! Don't worry about the meatless -- I'll figure that out. The amount of pork sounds just right in this one-- I couldn't believe one of the other recipes called for 4 lbs. of pork in a dish that would serve 4 people! Even 2 lbs. sounds like too much.
