View Full Version : Secret Shame Movies???

Since we have all been discussing the music that we hate (or love), I thought this would be a good topic. My brother has what he calls his "secret shame movie." It is the movie you will watch any time it is on regardless of the number of times you have seen it, but....you don't actually want to admit that you have watched it 15 times. His was Crocodile Dundee (big pause here) 2.

I have several secret shame movies but leading the list is "The Mummy." Mostly because I think Brendan Frasier is cute. Aggie94 would say that "Parentrap," either version, would be another!

How about the rest of you?

The first one that popped in my head is "Hudson Hawk" with bruce willis (ick), Danny Aiello (sp?) and the FABULOUS Richard E Grant & Sandra Bernhard. I Get a big bowl of popcorn & laugh my butt off!:p

I confess that "The Parent Trap" is on my list as well! The original version only! I even own it...so sad...
Another is "Max Dugan Returns" starring a 15 yr. old Matthew Broderick. It's not that the movie itself is so great, I think it is because I had a huge crush on him at the time!

Just to clarify, Parent Trap is Sharon's secret shame movie, not mine! I won't claim that one. ;)

That said, mine are The Cutting Edge and American Flyers. I actually haven't watched The Cutting Edge in years, although if I were to see it on, I'd definitely stay tuned. American Flyers, on the other hand, I catch about once a month or so. In fact, I just saw it last week. From the beginning. :D

Oh, I love The Parent Trap! The first time I saw it, I was staying with my aunt while my parents went diving, and I watched it 8 times during the rental period.
I've probably seen it 10 times since then.

Hm. I'm not ashamed to say I like that one, though. Maybe Weird Science? :o

I guess mine would have to be Dirty Dancing . And I'd be remiss if I didn't mention The Sound of Music . This is fun!

sharon
09-10-2001, 03:21 PM
Hmmmmm. I have to admit that I will watch Dirty Dancing almost every time it comes on. But, possibly an even worse shame of mine is Roadhouse. But come on, Patrick Swayze and Sam Elliot!

Weird Science would top my brother's list!

okay. BRAVEHEART I am sucker for period epics, Mel Gibson in a kilt, lots of earthy accents and sweaty men smudged with dirt and blood from the latest battle. For that matter, add Gladiator to this list, just sub Russell in a tunic for Mel in a kilt.

I'm crazy about the Disney movies Robin Hood and the Aristocats and not ashamed to say so; also get all weepy over Sound of Music.

And I will hold my head high when stating that the first Star Wars still gives me chills.

Dirty Dancing gets me EVERY TIME. Thank goodness TNT or whatever cable station keeps running it. I also own Forest Gump and can watch that over and over again. I always cry at the end.

I also second Star Wars. Now that was a great movie!

No shame here!!! Popeye with Robin Williams and Grease. I also wish I could see Xanadu on tv just once!

Grease and Grease II. I love Cutting Edge and any teeny bopper movie from the 80's and the past couple of years (i.e. Bring It On or Center Stage).

I cant TELL you how many times I have seen Grease, The Parent Trap and The SOund of Music

The other one would be Harry Met Sally, but I claim it PROUDLY!!!!It was our first date movie and countless dates after.....

"Who is Julia?" the tv movie with Mare Winningham about the woman who has (get this) a brain transplant.
I love seeing what Mare Winningham will do in a role, so I'd watch her take on any number of things that I'd cringe at from a less talented performer, but still. :o

I also enjoy the "Buried Alive" flicks on USA. The first has Tim Matheson as the doomed (but not til the sequel) spouse of Jennifer Jason Leigh, the sequel has Ally Sheedy as the doomed spouse of some lesser actor, who gets rescued from certain death by the dying Tim Matheson.

So glad to see that others like to watch (in secret!) Dirty Dancing! It's cheesy, but I can't pull myself away from watching it when it's on cable!

I also love horror flicks, so any of the Friday the 13th genre catches my eye, too. Wouldn't pay to see it in a theater, but if it's on TV, I'm there!

Oh my gosh, Julia, I never thought I'd meet another person who loves Grease 2! When I was younger, I watched that movie over and over again. I think I can sing every song from it!

I also love teeny bopper movies and see almost every one that comes out. I'm lucky that my BF loves them too so we go together and people laugh at us, but who cares?! They're so much fun! One of my all time favorites was on TV over the weekend -- Can't Buy Me Love. How good is that movie?!

KristaMB
09-10-2001, 04:03 PM
I love Dirty Dancing and The Sound of Music! Nothing to be ashamed of there! :)

Goonies is one of my all time favorites, but the movie I'm a little ashamed of is Sing. In high school I used to listen to the soundtrack over and over again.

hka
09-10-2001, 04:06 PM
Oh, Bluemoose! I thought I was the only one that liked Xanadu! I even bought the movie on VHS a long time ago and watch it from time to time. I went and saw that movie with my cousin in the theater when it came out. I just loved it and was completely thrilled when I found it to buy!

As for other movies, I'm soooo bad! I will watch a movie over and over and over and over....well you get the picture. Some of my favorites are Top Gun, Sixteen Candles, Breakfast Club...can you tell about the time I grew up? :D My husband teases me about how many times I've seen certain movies. Grease is another one. Whenever it comes on TBS or TNT I'll watch. My husband will come in and I'll get this guilty look on my face and he'll say "Grease again??" How many times have you seen that movie? It's a well known fact about me in my family about movie watching. I also get teased by my dad and brothers about how many times I've seen Dirty Dancing. I don't know what it is about me but I just love movies and don't mind watching them over and over if I really like them. Scary, I know! :p

Not a least bit ashamed to admit that I love The Sound of Music and have since my mother introduced me to it way back when! And no, it wasn't a new release then - I wasn't born until the '70s! :D

Also cute animated stuff (Lady and the Tramp)...I'm a sucker for stuff like that! Not new animated things, though - e.g., The Lion King, which I didn't like at all - but I do love some of the classics.

Just thought of another one that I watch on cable (and also saw originally in the theater) St. Elmo's Fire. It's funny now to watch all the actors in it, since they've all gone out to become pretty famous.

-- Can't Buy Me Love. How good is that movie?!

I love that movie!!! I have to admit any teenybopper movie will sucker me in. A recent run on one of the pay channels was Drive me Crazy with Melissa Joan Hart and I caught it a couple times. My DH thinks I am insane but then again I also was the WB on Friday nights for all the kid shows. !

Like hka, I will watch any of the 80's type movies over and over. But, Sixteen Candles is at the top of the list!

This is too funny. I love The Parent Trap too. The old version the best (I used to sing that song...Let's get together, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, we'll be having twice the fun) I remember I was plain old mad when I found out that Haley Mills really wasn't a twin at all. Very disappointed. I will also add Dirty Dancing, Pretty Woman and Big (with Tom Hanks)

LGBurns
09-10-2001, 05:09 PM
Oh boy. Do I have to admit this? Sister Act And what's worse, every time they start singing for the first time (when they're good) I get all choked up. I used to sing in choir at school and I really miss it and that movie always makes me nastolgic. Also, I really like Kathy Nijimy.

Others that I'll watch repeatedly and mention proudly (although my husband gives me a hard time about some of them): It's a Wonderful Life, When Harry Met Sally, Sense and Sensibility, Howard's End, okay I admit it, almost anything with Emma Thompson (except that one with Arnold Schwartzenegger).

One movie that I'm a little embarrassed to admit I'm really looking forward to seeing, although it doesn't come out until December 19, is The Lord of the Rings:Fellowship of the Ring. I've downloaded and watched the trailer more times than I care to admit. I love the books and it looks like they've done a great job with the movie. Okay, why do I feel like a trekee all of a sudden. Live long and prosper. ;)

Okay, brace yourself. Harry and the Hendersons with John Lithgow, Chances Are with Robert Downey, Jr., Ryan O'Neal and Cybil Shepard, and Die Hard with Bruce Willis. Strange combo?

If you've never seen Harry and th Hendersons, then you must rent it, especially if you have kids. It's a riot!

Another Grease , Grease 2 , and Xanadu fan here!!! DH cannot get over how many times I have watched Grease. AND I bought the CD about a year ago. Haven't listened for a while, I know what I'm listening to on my way to work tomorrow. Me and a girl friend had choreographed dances to most of the songs in Grease and Xanadu.

More movies I watch over and over and over (and I am not in the least bit ashamed) are 'Monty Python's Search for the Holy Grail' , 'Sixteen Candles' , 'Breakfast Club' , 'Ferris Bueller's Day Off' , and (the most recent) 'Office Space' . Oh, and 'Planes, Trains, and Automobiles'

And LGBurns, I'm glad I'm not the only girl who is looking forward to the Lord of the Rings! I am actually hoping my baby is not born until after December 19 just so I can be sure and see that movie in the theaters! And I normally am not very into that kind of stuff!

Laura B
09-10-2001, 06:26 PM
Oh, my gosh! So many of the movies mentioned are some of my all time faves, and I am not embarrased at all:

Pretty Woman
Dirty Dancing
When Harry Met Sally
Can't Buy Me love
Center Stage
Sound of Music
Grease
Sister Act
Top Gun

I guess the one I am most embarrased about loving is Bring it On. I rented it on pay-per-view. It was the first time I saw it and the rental just happened to be an all day ticket. I ended up watching it three times in a row!! :o And then I watched it the next day with my husband. I was never a cheerleader nor did I really want to be. But maybe deep down I did... I don't know. I just love that movie. Truly, the competition scenes are incredible!

I don't think any one mentioned Father of the Bride (the one with Steve Martin). I LOVE that movie and the sequel. I can watch the endlessly.

In general I also love any Julia Roberts movie (with some exceptions).

There was about a month in high school when I came home from school and watched Top Gun EVERY DAY!

I alos love Sleepless in Seattle and You've Got Mail. I'm a sucker for Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks (either together or separate).

It is so fun to think about some of these movies again - I think I will have to watch some of them this weekend. (I own a copy of all of the movies I mentioned. :o )

P.S. I have been known to get "stuck" on the Lifetime Movie Network - I just watch one movie after another! And I know I must not be the only one because they played one of those network ads the other day that said "Bet you can't watch just one!" How true.

lindrusso
09-10-2001, 06:31 PM
Okay, those that DO NOT embarass me - Grease, Steel Magnolias, Terms of Endearment, and Monty Python's Holy Grail (thanks for reminding me beacooker!!!) and I'm sure many others.

Those that I'm not as excited to admit: Top Gun - just gotta love that volley ball seen - it's one of the few films that gives women their equal time!!! Let's see there's also Flashdance and Dirty Dancing. Oh, I just know there are other doozies out there, I just can't think of them!!

JulieM
09-10-2001, 06:42 PM
I forgot about Holy Grail, that's my DH's FAVORITE and we've watched it over and over. I also forgot to mention The King and I (the original of course). And Overboard with Kurt Russel and Goldie Hawn.

And, of course, Holy Grail and Life of Brian I could watch over and over. But I am definitely not ashamed to admit that!

I love James Bond movies too & will watch them every time I get a chance. One of my most watched movies (not ashamed of though) is Tombstone. Can't get enough of Val Kilmer as Doc Holiday. My husband makes fun of me when he catches me watching it, but then he will sit down & watch too.

DH Admits to Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, and Bedknobs and Broomsticks

Embarrassingly enough...I have a tendancy to watch the Lifetime movie
version of "The Karen Carpenter Story" over and over again..

Others on my list are ( and mind you I own all of these on VHS yet
I still watch them if they show up on tv or HBO):

Breakfast Club
Better Off Dead
One Crazy Summer
Jaws
Carrie
The blues brothers
CaddyShack
Holy Grail
Lake Placid
Armageddon
Last Boy Scout

Ooo, me too! I love that movie. In fact, just the other day I had the song "Truly Scrumptious" stuck in my head for some reason, even though it has been ages since I've watched the movie. And, thanks, it is now officially stuck again!

I also love Oliver! and Annie.

No shame here, though. And I own them all. :D

Laura, I absolutely LOVE Father of the Bride. I watched it with my parents once and it was too funny. My Dad kept reaching over and scruffling (is that a word?:)) my hair and my Mom cried so much that we had to wait a little while to leave the theater cause she was embarrased by how puffy her face was! Can you imagine what it will be like when I get married?! Anyway, I really love that movie and get choked up every time I watch it....that scene where they play "Today I met the boy I'm gonna marry..." and Steve Martin pictures her from a little girl all the way up to the present. I love it!

OK, so I'm not ashamed of it but perhaps I should be...my favorite movie of all time is Pee-Wee's Big Adventure. The most shameful aspect of my love for this film is that I own it in more than one format. Oh. I am ashamed that I like Steel Magnolias. I love that movie, but am ashamed to admit it. It would totally lower my coolness points.

Well, my alltime favorite movie that I've seen at least 30 times is The Shawshank Redemption but I don't think of that as a 'secret shame movie'. Same goes for my second favorite movie of all time, It's A Wonderful Life. I'll hold my head up proud and say that those two are perfectly justified because they contribute to today's society... ;) But don't forget, I am a late 70's/early 80's girl... so my secret shame movies are:

The Night the Lights Went Out In Georgia (A young Dennis Quaid singing and showing his chest...yum)

Ice Castles (Robby Benson couldn't act his way out of a bag, but I love it anyway!)

The Goonies (Kid's movie with a twist...)

The Rocky Series (I have the boxed set)

Top Gun (Gotta make sure I watch that volleyball scene 'Playing with the Boys!')

Weird Science, Sixteen Candles, Dirty Dancing, and of course....Oh God!! :D

Peggy
09-10-2001, 11:02 PM
My "not ashamed" list:
The Big Chill (I love the two soundtracks!)
When Harry Met Sally

My all time favorite "Secret Shame" movie:
There's Something About Mary - Everytime I see it (and it is fairly regularly) I laugh harder. The scene with the zipper in the bathroom on prom night makes me absolutely hysterical. I laugh until I can't breathe. And the dog scene... Don't get me started! I'm so embarrassed that I like it because the humor is so off-beat and raw. I just can't help myself. But, please don't tell my mother I like this movie. She would be disgusted with me!

Blush!

Peggy

P.S. I also love James Bond movies!!

Okay, I gotta pick up Goonies, Xanadu, Overboard, Hmmm... What else is there???? I haven't seen them in years!
I loved Popeye with Robin Williams and saw Chances Are in the theater. I also love F.O.B. w/Steve Martin.
I know I risk getting clobbered, but I can't stand Patrick Swayze---Bleah! I'll watch Dirty Dancing once in a great while, tho.
I just about worship Steve Martin: The Jerk, Parenthood, Three Amigo's, and my fave: L.A. Story.
Thanks all, for shaping up my weekend plans!!

DH and I are very much looking forward to this movie!! If you love the books, you must get the LOTR game! We have it and it's great. One of the few games where the players are all helping each other (yes, you're the hobbits) against a common enemy. If you can't find it at your toy store, try www.Funagaingames.com.

I can't believe no one has mentioned Princess Bride!

Yes, yes, yes, I love all these movies, due to insomnia I catch most of them whenever they're on. I've got one to add: Groundhog Day! I just LOVE this movie, dh thinks I'm absurd. Two others would be Terms of Endearment and Working Girl, these I have on tape and watch all by my lonesome in our family room with the surround sound and a bag of microwave popcorn. sally

Okay, I'll jump in here - The World According To Garp with Robin Williams. I've probably watched this 100 times and love it every time. If you haven't seen it, read the book first, then watch the movie.

Also:

1. The Big Chill
2. Steel Magnolias
3. Network
4. Benny & Joon
5. Rush Hour

OK, anyone remember the Boy in the Plastic Bubble with John Travolta??!

Some other shame movies are Saturday Night Fever, Pulp Fiction (notice a trend here?) and Planes, Trains and Automobiles. I love that one, makes me laugh every time, especially the "those aren't pillows!" line.

Definately the Parent Trap. Am I the only one that has to choke back the tears?

Also, Dirty Dancing, Big, , Splash (anything with Tom Hanks), Shawshank Redemption and The Wizard of Oz.

Lots of good ones mentioned here. I would like to add Paulie , I cry when he gets reunited with the little girl (now grown) that he was separated from. Another one is Stuart Little. I know I'm a geek but I find these 2 to be tear jerkers.

Speaking of tear jerkers, if you want a good one, check out Back Street with Susan Hayward.

Ok, for all you folks listing Sound of Music and Star Wars.....those aren't "shame" movies! They're Oscar winners. So, no shame for you (unless you actually like the little furry creatures from Star Wars 3. I don't even remember what they're called)

I was surprised to see GREASE II already (that's one of mine. I don't think GREASE is a shame-category). And even more surprised to see OLIVER! What is it about that movie that I will watch it any time, any where? VIVA LAS VEGAS is another great one.

Any movie with John Cusack in it is on my list (even the bad ones)

The No. 1 on my no-shame list is BUTCH CASSIDY & THE SUNDANCE KID.

DH's fav-no-shame movie is ANIMAL HOUSE.

I love Rocky Horror Picture Show!

And add my name to the "excited about Lord of the Rings" list. I've had the screen saver on my computer for months. When I heard it was coming out I took all the books from my parents (including The Hobbit) and read them aloud to DH. It was very important to me that he read them and I couldn't bear to miss out.

Aggie- I, too, love The Cutting Edge. DH (a guy who can't get enough John Wayne, Jackie Chan & Bogart) does too, so it doesn't take much convincing to watch it!

I am a self-proclaimed lover of cheesy 80's movies (a la John Hughes)!! To name a few:
The Breakfast Club
Sixteen Candles
Pretty in Pink
Wierd Science
Ferris Beuller's Day Off
Caddyshack
Stripes
Better Off Dead
Valley Girl
Fast Times at Ridgemont High
(oh, I could go on and on...)

2 others that I could watch every day and never tire: Gross Point Blank and So I Married an Axe Murderer.

Thank you Andrea and Sharon and others to fessing up to a John Cusack addiction too. I will watch Say Anything and the Sure Thing anytime they are on, which is often. Gross Pointe Blank is also a favorite. Those two scenes with he and Akroyd squaring off (one on the side of the road, one in the diner) make my sides split.

I also watch Valley Girl, with a very, very young Nicholas Cage every time it is on....."She is out there somewhere". Maybe that is why I married a valley boy??????

Another John Cusack fan!! I love him and anything that he's in- even that one about the record store (can't remember the name). It wasn't that great, but I still had to watch it twice. Say Anything is an awesome movie, One Crazy Summer, Better off Dead (LOVE that one!)..

All my favorites have been mentioned here. Jewel, you and my husband would get along great. He LOVES The Shawshank Redemption and always watches it when it's on. By the way, few people realize that's a Stephen King story! Hubby also LOVES It's a Wonderful Life. He quotes lines from both movies. Unfortunately, he also loves Jaws and will watch it over and over.

One thing I didn't see here- any mafia movies! I am mostly Italian, too. I LOVE the Godfather movies, Casino, - well, anything mafia and anything Al Pacino. Don't know why. My mother is worried about me.

Okay, forgot the really embarrassing one- Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure (strange things are afoot at the Circle K). I like Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey, too. Very silly, but where else would you see Keanu Reeves in such a silly role?

Loved this movie growing up. Mom didn't like it becasue of the violence, but my older brother and I found ways to watch it anyways.

I first read this thread yesterday, I remember so many of thise movies.

The night the lights went out in Georgia also has Mark Hamil in it.

I'm another big John Cusack fan.

I watch most of what has already been mentioned. How about Son-in-law with Paulie Shore?

What I do that's pathetic is watch a movie that's on tv when I already own it and watch it often as it is. Just the other night I did it. The Truth about Cats and Dogs was on. I love that movie!

I am also a big Jurassic Park freak. Maybe I should be ashamed of that!

Thanks Andrea! It sure wasn't one of his better ones, but hey, he was still in it!

Thank goodness for this thread! After this week, I'm craving some total escapism. Bring on the movies. My secret faves are:

Dirty Dancing (reminds me of being in college because the line "Baby's going to Mount Holyoke in the fall" made watching this a de rigeur ritual in freshman year)

Return of the Jedi (I secretly love the Star Wars score even though I know Williams basically copied someone else's composition)

4 Weddings and a Funeral

Any James Bond flick

Speed (though a movie with bombs isn't appealing at the moment)

Henry V

BBC Pride and Predjudice

OK, I wouldn't normally be ashamed of the last 2, but I watch them way too much!

Off to the rental place!

Ooooh! Pride and Prejudice! I haven't seen that in so long!
I remember when I read Bridget Jones' Diary, how they always played the part where Colin Firth comes out of the pond over & over & over! MMMMM!:D

The Princess Bride, Father of the Bride (I love Steve Martin), and So I Married an Axe Murderer are all good movies!

It's funny, the movies a lot of you mentioned I wouldn't be ashamed to admit. ;)

Maybe I missed it...has anyone admitted to being an Adam Sandler fan yet, or is that just a guy thing? Although, The Wedding Singer was suprisingly good! ;)

OK, tell the truth...is anyone else watching Grease on TNT today? ;) I can't resist that movie anytime it's on, even though I could pop in the VHS tape anytime I wanted to! (Hey, you're cruisin' for a bruisin'!) :D

:o I am a closet Adam Sandler fan. I forgot all about that, or I would have definitely mentioned that in my shame category!

MrsReber, I LOVE the Godfather trilogy, too! And many other mob movies for that matter. I didn't list them, though, because I am so not ashamed of that. I think my husband was actually quite impressed that I love the Godfather movies so much.

Okay. I admit it. The one movie that sends me into fits of hysteria every time I see it (and I've seen it a million times) is Lust in the Dust . It's a musical parody of Westerns starring Tab Hunter, Divine and Ally Kazan that was made in about 1976. You would almost believe that it is a John Waters movies, but it isn't. While it's certainly nothing for the kids to see (it can be risque in parts), it's perfectly fun adult entertainment when you are feeling really, really stupid.

Oh yeah any musical is a balm to my soul, the one I am most recently junked out on is Evita, yes I said Evita with Madonna.
And of course GWTW sigh..
I can't think about that today, I'll cry if I do, I'll think of it tomorrow...
