I looked in Cooks Thesarus and found nothing...ok...who knows??

You've seen it in the brown packets at trendy coffee joints, too.
It's spelled T-U-R-B-I-N-A-D-O, so maybe the recipe had it misspelled, which is why you didn't find it in the thesaurus.
It's sugar that, as I recall, isn't as completely processed as white sugar. The crystals tend to be larger, and there is a pronounced brown sugar or molasses taste.
I love the stuff for baking - roll balls of cookie dough (such as gingerbread cookies or chocolate drops) in it for a crunchy crust.
It's sold in the grocery stores in the sugar aisle, usually in a box near the sugar cubes.
I sprinkle it on top of muffins and scones too.

Kim, look in Cook's Thesaurus again - you have it misspelled, and that may be why nothing came up - it's Turbinado sugar, although beejayw1 described it very well.

One of the games my 5th graders play is to see who can catch me misspelling something:D
