Two weeks after I got my Sept. issue, Oct. appeared in my mailbox. It looks fantastic... especially from my vegetarian perspective! The Inspired Vegetarian column is back (simple soups and salads), the Dinner Tonight recipes are all vegetarian, and so are two of the Superfast recipes.

it does look great (got mine on Friday) - lots of fall stuff. I made the Pumpkin Crumb Cake with Apples last night - it was great! There's definitely a lot of things I'll make out of this one...

Yay!!! I can't wait to get mine-- sooo excited for the veggie recipes. They've been lacking lately.
So where's the cooking class from this month?

Cooking Class focuses on the Middle East this month. There are some wonderful-looking bulgur recipes, and a yummy looking zucchini salad-dip recipe.

Imagine my surprise! I got mine today....I was one of the last to get September. A CL and our tax refund check all in one day! :D
I haven't looked at it yet, though.

Wow, Chrisi - you should go play the lottery today, I think! ;)

I'm trying to think of what recipes I remember from the issue (I'm at work now)...
There is an article on pasta sauces which has simple recipes for alfredo sauce, marinara, mushroom sauce, and maybe a few others.
There is an article called "The dish on pots and pans" or something like that. It explains what different types of baking equipment are used for. For example, along with the definition of "shallow baking dish" is a recipe for a bowtie pasta casserole with cheese and chipotles. I believe there is also a greens souffle and another recipe or two in this article.
There is the Cooking Class article on the Middle East, which has a lot of appetizing recipes.
Somewhere there was a recipe for a barley, beet and feta salad that I'm excited about... I've never made beets, am not sure I like them, and am determined to try them! And there's a caramelized onion-goat cheese-sundried tomato pizza, because my housemate made that last night (and liked it!)
In the reader recipes section I remember a recipe for layered zucchini casserole that sounded good...
The Superfast vegetarian recipes were mooshu vegetable wraps and quesadillas with zucchini and olives.
There's an article on bar cookies too.
The Places to Go article is on Washington D.C., and the fitness article focuses on exercises you can do at work.
I'm sorry I can't be more helpful... I read with an eye for vegetarian recipes, the rest just sort of slide past me. :(
But all in all, I was very excited about this issue!

Wow - what a memory!! Thanks Gertdog for giving me a clue about what there is to look forward to! It does sound like an especially good issue. I can't wait. The mail already came today, nothing in it here in Chicago.....but I'm not complaining. I typically get mine early compared to most, so I'm sure I'll be seeing it in the next few days. I'll be looking forward to the new reviews!!

Congratulations on your issues. I'm not complaining when I say this next, but stating a fact. We got our first "mainland" mail today since last Tuesday's tragedy. I don't expect mail delivery to catch up anytime soon. I have contacted all my "creditors" on the mainland (Ford Credit and VISA) to let them know that although my payments have been mailed, it may be a while before they get them. Both companies were very understanding. Some of my bills that are very nearly due haven't even gotten to me yet!!
So, back to the magazine, I don't expect my October issue any time in the even remotely near future.

Got mine and although it looks great, I couldn't help but notice some irony in the features ... the travel section on Washington DC with the National Cathedral as "best religious experience" ... the Middle Eastern food...
Maybe my brain is just stuck six days ago.

I'm looking forward to this issue for a welcome distraction and for inspiration to end a cooking slump!! And I too welcome the vegetarian meals!!

I got mine last night...the only section that doesn't really appeal to me is the middle east cooking section - not because of anything that is going on...just sort of pushing the envelope too far in what DH would like. Maybe the Cornish hens but meatballs with eggs? He would surely protest.
Things of the top of my head that looked great:
The sauces:
Alfredo
Mushroom Sauce (YUM!)
I just love the article on pots and pans!! For someone who cooks a lot, I really do not know the difference with different pans etc.. and I admittedly did NOT know what a dutch oven was :o
From that article:
Roasted Pork Tenderloin with root vegetables
Cheesecake with an orange glaze and a yummy crust I can't remember
A Jelly roll cake with coulis
Superfast:
Pork with a dijon mustard sauce
moo shu veggie wraps
mushroom and spinach enchiladas
The lighten up recipe was potato gratin with goat cheese and something else that looked heavenly
There was also a recipe for pizza that looked fantastic....I think it was another goat cheese one with carmelized onions..how can you go wrong? ;)
The herb bread pudding looks amazing.
There was also a raisin rye bread
There was also a couple of shrimp pasta dishes
Tzatsiki Burgers looked good
There was also an article on soups with salads ...the soups look great!
There was a hearty barley soup
A chickpea soup
A roasted red pepper soup?
oh and the back to the best is a "fried" chicken salad with beets and blue cheese i think?
and the ultimate looking comfort food :
Chili cheddar bake!
That's all I can remember. I was going to bring it to work with me but alas, it didn't make it into my gym bag. :(

Just received my Oct. CL and some of the recipes look great. A funny thing happened to my issue. The top of several pages are cut off and some of the recipe titles are missing and a few lines of the article. I don't think any of the recipes are missing, just titles. Who needs titles anyway? Just make one up. I just wondered if this has happened to anyone else or if I got a "special edition".
I am impressed. I just got a Private Message from Maelynn asking for my mailing address to send me an intact copy; however, that was not my intent. I just thought it was odd and wanted to know if I had the only one.

OK, I guess it's now my turn to be envious - haven't yet received mine.
But also another first: IMHO, very few of those recipes look too exciting to me! I don't like mushrooms, squash, bleu cheese, or pumpkin. But that's the beauty of this BB - we all have different tastes & are accepting of all of those different flavors. And don't worry, I won't infiltrate the board with "this is terrible" postings!

OK, I live in upstate new york too, and I didn't get my issue yet! Actually I live about 3 miles from one of you NYSers and still don't have mine. I thought it was the postal service, but I think it might have something to do with the distribution. Or maybe I'm just not worthy!

October issue received in Southern NH!
I haven't opened it yet - I have Friday off and I'm saving it either for tomorrow night when I sigh with relief or for Friday morning in my bathrobe with a cup of tea.
