Since asparagus pee has already been discussed on this board, I feel safe in raising yet another indelicate observation about the process of elimination.
I have eaten a copious amount of beets in the last 24 hours: the Sweet and Sour beet recipe from March '01 makes 6 servings. DH ate one serving and I have eaten the other 5 since last night's dinner. I apologize for being crude, but my pee is pink.
Is this normal? Is there such a thing as B.O. (Beet Overdose)?
Beets are a relatively new phenomenon for me (or REnewed)- only recently did I realize that they did not come out of cans like purple ping pong balls, with little voices that sounded eerily like my mother's, saying "you can't leave the table until you eat us all up" I have rediscovered them in an attempt to eat more Power Vegetables. Pink pee was an unanticipated side affect...

I wonder if the same thing would happen if you ate a couple heads of purple cabbage? Let's get some experimenting going, people!

I am roaring here. And after the last week, that is a major accomplishment.
Thanks Julie. You made my day.
I am serious here - I cannot stop giggling.......:D

Oh, just wait until you don't just have to pee :D
I'm sorry, that's so crude, but you could seriously play a mean joke on DH and make him think you have serious problems.
I'm actually used to it now, but this happens to me all the time when I eat beets -- kinda prettier than pale yellow, don'tcha think? ;)

My dad used to be a science teacher. He and a couple of the other teachers thought it would be funny to play a joke on one of the other guys. They put something (I don't know what) in his beer one night that made him pee blue and the poor guy thought he was dying!
Of course, my dad as a teenager gave Feenament (sp?) gum to a neighborhood kid who was hanging around bugging him too much. He didn't see him for a few days.

When I woke up one day with BRIGHT red pee I quickly headed on down to the doctor's office, so I could nip the bladder infection in the bud, before I got any other symptoms. The labwork was absolutely clear. You should have seen the look on my face when I remember the PINT of pickled beets I had single-handedly consumed the night before. I just wanted to slink out the door.

Oh my gosh, I've eaten beets forever and I've never noticed it before, BUT this year I have noticed it in me. It really concerned me. But what really scared us was that we spent four hours in the ER one Sunday afternoon because DH's stools were bloody/beety. He kinda suspected the beets but the doctor said no they wouldn't cause it. HA! I feel so much better. Thanks for this thread. You've just cured us. By the way, DH's bloodwork came out great. Imagine that.

I made an appt. that day because everyone said it was a bladder infection, even though I had no symptom and had never had a bladder infection (touch wood)! Dr. put me through all the meds without testing, she was trying to get it quickly so that I wouldn't have the pain. I was so embarrassed at my follow-up appt. to admit that I had eaten too many roasted red beets. She laughed and said that she wouldn't make that mistake again with her patients. Eating red beets would be on her list of questions for that problem:)
There should be a book on Unusual Things Foods do to the Human Body available, perhaps we should collectively write it??
I noticed this one day after I had eaten a good amount of beets. It can be a jolt before you figure it out. Vicky

I have a bunch of beets in my fridge waiting to be roasted. Thanks for the warning. And the laugh!

Chuckling here - and boy, does it feel good!
Say - if you eat a pint of beets (which turns things red) and then take an over the counter diuretic (which turns things blue) will you then pee purple??

I have found out that I love beets. I can eat a lot of them a day. The first time I noticed anything 'amiss' was in my stool. I called my Mother to tell her I had blood in my stool. She was upset and told me to go to the doctor's right away, that it was serious. This is the one and only time I was grateful that the doctor could not see me right away. Later on that day I noticed a slight pink aura in the loo and put two and two together. (or is that two and one?) I do not know if you can O.D. on beets, but I must push the limit, if there is one.
I wonder what my insides look like? A deeply tie-dyed quilt?

This thread is just makes you laugh. I have been interested in trying beets and am wondering if there are any recipes you would suggest for someone who has never had beets- other than a few pickled beets at a Arabic Restaurant. I am almost tempted to OD to see if I get pink pee :p

My most favorite Beet recipe so far is the Roasted Beets with Walnut Basil Dressing and Gorgonzola. Too die for! I'd suggest doing a search. You'll get lots of great beet ideas...............

And here I'm all excited about cooking beets for the first time for the barley, beet, and feta salad that's in this month's CL! Now I'll think twice... or just know what to expect!
I eat tons of asparagus and don't get asparagus pee... I wonder if I'll be susceptible to beet pee?
Thanks all for the laugh!

Actually, gertdog, you do get asparagus pee; you just don't have the gift ;)
Seriously, everyone is genetically predisposed to either be able to detect the odor of aparagus pee or not. Isn't that funny?

Well then, that's one gift I'm glad I don't have! :D Why on earth would some people have that ability and some not, I wonder?
And I guess beet pee would be totally different anyway since it's a color not an odor, right?
