I ran in our annual Al's Run for Children's Hospital yesterday, a 5 mile race through downtown Milwaukee to the lakefront. It was a gorgeous day for a race - clear blue sky, and a mild 72 degrees. There were thousands of runners and lots of spectators to cheer us on, including many of the kids that had received or were receiving treatment at Children's Hospital, so it was very touching.
Anyway, this was only my second real race and I was psyched. My DH and I were going to run together, but at the start he took off like a rabbit. I carried on at my own pace, and finished 9 seconds under my goal time (39:51). Lest my head start to swell, however, my husband informed me that a guy dressed as a giant bratwurst beat me by a full 5 MINUTES!! Ah well, I did beat the guys in the hot dog and polish sausage suits. A little consolation, I guess...:)
Just thought you food aficionados would get a kick out of the fact that giant meats are running in races! And some are beating me! My competitive juices (and salivary glands) are kicking into gear! Guess I'll have to run harder...
Anyone else have any recent races to share?

Mbart--
Thank you for a MUCH needed laugh! I wonder if there was somebody dressed as a Weber grill chasing him? :p And, of course, congratulations on your race & time.

Mbart, that time is awesome! That's under an 8-minute-per-mile pace! You must be psyched! Very cool. I've never run a 5-mile race before; I think it would be a great distance for a race, though.
Too funny about the bratwurst guy -- can you imagine how fast he could run without all that crap on??
No new races until next weekend -- I've got the Portland marathon on Sunday (wahoo!); I'm going for 3:20, and I know I can do it, it just depends on how smartly I race it.
I think right now, though, I'm off to find some races for October! :D

Good for You!!!!!
I'd have been sitting on a curb laughing crazily at the thought of running a race with processed meats - unless of course I was chasing the Bratwurst so I could take a bite......Mmmmmm bratwurst....
Thanks for the giggle.

That sounds like a lot of fun for a great cause. Glad you enjoyed it, and congrats on your super time! :D

A friend of mine once completed a race primarily by remaining determined to follow the nicely curvy lady in front of him. :o
I can't say a man in a meat suit would motivate me very much, but a tub of ice cream just might, LOL!

Emily,
I meant to wish you good luck in your Portland Marathon - I saw the thread this morning, and saw your goal time. I was thinking about your time and my race yesterday. After I finished, I was spent, exhausted, wheezing, rubbery legs, the whole thing. I was thinking that in your case, you would be running faster than I and at that point you would still have another 21 PLUS MILES TO GO!!! Yikes, how do you do that? Remarkable.
Best of luck, and do keep a little "journal" of the event right here on the Healthy Living BB so we can "experience" it with you!

Thank you so much for a much needed laugh. I know my husband thinks I'm strange as I sit in a darkened room with only the glow of the CRT laughing myself silly! :D

Mbart-
Thank you so much for this post.... now everytime I am looking at the board and see it I visualize this sausage running down the road and laugh.
Congratulation on the race, what a terrific time! Gina

Don't feel bad about getting beat by a bratwurst! During last year's Butte to Butte race, which is a 10K race that starts with a steep one-mile uphill (the woman who won this year has done Boston several times and said it was worse than Heartbreak Hill) followed by a steep and fast one-mile downhill, a group of firefighters ran the entire race in their FULL UNIFORMS AND GEAR, including boots. I wasn't running, but I was out there on my bike cheering DH on, and they came in well before I would have finished had I been running. Lucky for them, it was cold and rainy that year. Impressive.

Were people supposed to be dressed as food??;) I'll have to get more serious about actually running a race, I didn't know there was more to it than just running fast, and striving for a new pr.
But congratulations on the great time! Go you!

What I want to know is, was it an Usinger's bratwurst?

I have to chime in and say that this is one of the funniest posts I've read. Ohhh, the bittersweet success...to accomplish a goal and be beat by a sausage. I giggle and think, "Oh, I can sooo identify with that."
Congratulations on beating your time goal!! Way to Go!!

Actually, these sausages are the "mascots" (I guess you could call them that) that run at all the home Milwaukee Brewers baseball games. In one of the later innings of each home game, they have these four giant sausages (hot dog, brat, polish sausage, italian sausage) come out and run a race. Everyone has their favorite to cheer for, and they really ham it up, exchanging leads and so on. Plus, they look hilarious in these giant costumes. Its silly humor. Well, apparently they must be branching out beyond the ball park; now they are entering road races! Where will it stop?!

That is so funny. I'm sitting here chuckling in my office.
Beaten by a bratwurst, that is so funny. When I saw the topic of this thread, I thought "what the?".....
Thanks for the laugh.
