What kind of canned tomatoes do you use for pasta sauce (crushed, whole, etc..)? Thanks!!!

Thanks!

Basically you can use what you like. I have used whole, diced, pureed, etc. They all work well. Sometimes I like to have larger pieces, so I like the whole ones, and then I can crush them as much as I want.

Usually what I will be using it for will dictate which ones I use. If I am making a sauce for a lasagna, I like larger pieces. If I am making it for spaghetti, then I like it pureed with no texture.

I prefer crushed tomatoes combined with tomato paste since I like the sauce kind of thick. BUt I have a very hard time finding them in a 15-oz. can. Libby's is the only brand that I've seen, and I never eat much living alone. In fact, my whole sauce recipe is no more than half a 15-oz. can crushed tomatoes mixed with a fourth can of tomato paste and a spoonful of basil.

When I can't find the Libby's crushed tomatoes, I just get diced and crush them myself. For tomato paste, I only use Contadina, and for diced tomatoes, I like Del Monte or Contadina. I don't care for any Hunt's products.

I use diced b/c I like it a little chuncky. (Whole are too chunky though.)

I like to use whole and then, as funnybone metioned, you can mush them up as much as you like. Sometimes I'll puree them, sometimes cut them up, depending on how chunky you want your sauce.

Hello,

I always buy whole canned tomatoes. The brand name just depends on what is on sale at the time. I have noticed that even when buying the same brand of canned tomatoes, the taste will vary throughout the year (due to packaging dates).

I like Star Cross Crushed Tomatos.
