Okay, I'm taking a deep breath in, deep breath out. Time to leave the last 3 weeks (yes, that's 3 weeks without regular exercise!!!) behind and get my butt to the gym!
So, this week I WILL get to the gym for weights 3 times and I will do cardio 3 times, plus Pilates at least twice.
I'm still ticked off about the YMCA and their change in babysitting hours. They have hours from 8am-12pm and then 4pm-8pm. I was loving going at 8am, but then my youngest started preschool three days a week from 9am-11am. I generally use these 2 hours to run errands and do all that boring stuff that kids hate! The 8am hour is pretty much killed for those 3 days (I can't go any earlier than that because I drop off oldest at school at 8am). That really only leaves 4pm which I HATE! That's my dinner prep time! I liked going at 3pm much better - could still get dinner on the table in a reasonable amount of time.
Obviously I'm going to have to suck it up and figure out a way to make it work!! I know I can do it, I'm just being stubborn/bratty/spoiled because I had so many choices last year when they offered babysitting all day long!
So let me see if I can come up with a schedule this week that I can stick to (just for my own benefit - if I post in publicly, I'll work harder to stick to it :) ):
Monday: 8 am - Lower Body plus Cardio
Tuesday: 4 pm - Cardio and Pilates (Pilates at home)
Wednesday: 4 pm - Upper Body
Thursday: 11:15 am - Cardio & Pilates (Pilates at home)
Friday: 9:15 am - Lower Body
Okay, I think I can live with that! Hope everyone had a great week and welcome to all the new members joining us! It's so nice to see that this group still has lots of life after 1 year has gone past!!! :)

Monday, I'm starting fresh! I have joined a fitness contest at another website and need to get my rear in gear! I posted a few weeks ago and then felt guilty for not doing anything, so haven't been back.
I will start by drinking lots of water, walking daily and watching what I eat.
I have thought about joining Weight Watchers - but am not certain I want to do that yet. I have about 20 lbs to take off. I am indecisive whether I should go at it alone or join WW. Any advice??
Anyway - I am ready to get started and get in shape.

lindrusso, I am sure you will get back into it!!! Just keep saying you will do it, and YOU WILL do it!!!
I managed some about 3 days of TaeBo and 1 BowFlex (which I really did not enjoy - I am not sure if I am doing the moves right). I really need to do another 21 day challenge, but its difficult until soccer season is over. I felt really motivated whenI challenged myself - I just don't feel quite the same now. I think its the fall weather too - I hate the fall. I am always sad to see the summer go!!
Eating has been good, but I have been baking this week. I have not been going overboard though eating it. One or two pieces of the entire dessert satisfy me. I made 2 different cranberry breads and the Pumpkin struesel buns. So all were low fat from CL. We ate fish 2 nights as well, and lots of fruit and veggies.

Can I copy Lindrusso's answer from last week? I have not been good at all. But I am here drinking my second 16oz glass of water for the day, and am going for a run later on. I have been very stressed of late which should be the reason to exercise; instead I have allowed it to be an excuse for not exercising. Anyway, I hope to do better this week.

Lindrusso, you can do it! Think of how good you will feel after the workouts! I love that feeling, and sometimes, it can even get me to the gym.
Funnybone, keep up the good work! Whenever you are ready for the next 21 day challenge(maybe after soccer season), may I join you? I don't have a Taebo tape, but I'd be willing to do a challenge for the 21 days of consecutive exercise of some sort each day. :)
Well, I have done better these past few days on my eating. I'm not having so many cravings....finally fiqured out why. My hormones had taken over.(or at least that is what I am telling myself it was):)
Good luck this week!

Ah-h, those pesky hormones!! :o I had several days this past week in which I could have eaten the panelling off the walls!! Such days are usually followed by a couple in which I hardly care if I eat again!
I DID work out harder at the gym, though, to compensate, so I guess it balanced out.
I had my regular doctor's visit this past week, and that was an upper. My weight has stayed the same for each of my visits to him over the past five years! I got good "report cards" on my mammogram and pap smear, discussed a few tiny little issues to get some fresh advice, and am good for another 3,000 miles!
Alysia, when you are at the Y on Monday morning, at 8 a.m., I will be at my gym, doing my lower body workout and cardio too. Let's make it a date! (You HAVE to show up now, and give it your BEST effort, so as not to disappoint me! :D )
I hope everyone has a good, healthy, and productive week!

Last week was one of the best weeks I've had in a long time.
I got to the gym 5 days!
I did 1 hour of cardio on mon, wed & fri, then I did a 1 hour pilates class on tues & thurs, and also on thurs I did 40 mins of cardio. Yippee!!
I was hoping to get out this weekend and walk, but DS had a soccer tourney, (4 games in 2 days). Guess where we were all weekend? They did come in 2nd overall which was a great accomplishment, considering they have a combo 13/14 yr old team and having only been playing together for 1 month!
Anyway, eating was really good! I follow WW (am a life time member) and kept my points to my maximum allowed!
This week I'm going to go to the gym everyday again, and do the same routine as last week, except add 40 mins of cardio on tues.
Hope everyone has a great week! keep up the good work!
Ann :)

Hi all! Alysha, glad you are back this week! ;) It sounds like you have a good plan worked out, good luck!
Last week was pretty good, went to Curves 3 times and tried to run once. Did okay until my knee started hurting. I did WW all week too. I haven't weighed in a couple days which is very unusual, but since Brian and I started up again, I have lost about 5 of the 10 pounds I have been trying to lose.
The problem is that now the hard part begins. I have hovered around the weight I am right now for about 10 months and it seems impossible to go lower. It would not be a huge deal except 1) I have clothes that are too tight, and 2) my original weight gain was about 60 pound over 8 years with me not getting rid of those few extra pound, then the next few, then the next few. Everyone says "oh you look fine, don't worry about it" but I know what can happen when I don't worry about it, and I never what to go there again.
Marian you asked about WW. I have actually never been a member, but my SO swears by it. He is a lifetime member and it really works well for him, I was not with him at the time, but I think he lost somewhere between 60-80 pounds on it. Once you get the hang of it, it is easy to do, and it keeps you honest, counting up the points all the time.
I would also be very interested in a 21 day challenge. It will probably be several months before my knee heals again (I don't even get in to see the Dr. until the end of this month.) so I am going to need to substitute other exercises for running. I will still do Curves about 3-4 days a week, but need something to motivate me on the other days. I do have the Tae Bo tapes, and when I did them this spring I enjoyed the workout. Gina

HARRYET good for you, sounds like you had a great week!
Marian, I just recently rejoined WW. Never became a lifetime member, quit the last time when I was 1 lb. from goal. Do I have issues or what? But that is just me, it is a healthy, basic guide to losing weight safely. It really helps me keep portion sizes in perspective.
I am very sore today, I went back to my first Ashtanga yoga class in over a year on Saturday! I paid for a three month unlimited classes membership, so I will be going to class at least twice a week :D ! I also walked and did step aerobics last week.
Eating was pretty good, too. I was really proud of myself that I stayed on track while travelling on business. I was also able to stay on track at Celtic Fest on Saturday.
So a very good week here!! Good luck all!

SLACKER!!
I only went walking twice this week. What am I thinking? Technically, I did exercise 4 times. On night I stayed home, but worked some toning exercises (these really should be happening after I come home from my walk)....then on Saturday night, I went to the gym and walked on the "dreaded tread" for all of a half an hour....wahoo! I don't know what happened to me. Hubby did go camping this weekend. He left on Thursday. I don't sleep well when he is not home, so maybe I was working on a lack of sleep thing. (A likely excuse)
I did keep up well with my eating. So, that is something.
Despite my slacker tendencies.....I did lose a couple more lbs. I am down to 232 (according to the gym scale on my evening visit) Last night I tried on a pair of pants overalls that I haven't been able to fit into for at least 3 years. (another one of my nightly "fashion shows"....its a good thing my husband loves me) Anyway, they are now on the "I can wear these out in public" pile. The really cool thing is that a lot of the clothes that I worked so hard to fit back into this summer are now baggy on me. I am going to have to buy some new clothes soon. wahoo!
Lindrusso and Marian....congratulations on jumping back in. That is a rough thing to do!
This week I am shooting for a walk every day Monday through Friday with some toning exercise at least 3 out of those 5 days because this weekend is booked up. Its our 1 year anniversary. We are having a splurge night on Saturday at Macaroni Grill and we are staying a night at a local resort. We manage to get a suite that has a private jacuzzi out on the patio. We are pretty excited.
Anyway, have a great week everyone! :p

AZLorena-
I love hearing about your fashion shows!!! I know the thrill of trying something on that you wondered if it would ever fit again and finding it does. Woo hoo for you!!!!
I did that once when I got close to my goal weight.... I found an old bikini in the bottom of a drawer. Had no idea why I kept it, it was probably 8 years old and had not fit in 8 years. I put it on and traipsed out to the living room to show it off. I got a slight glance and a lukewarm "that's nice" from my husband. I divorced him a year later.
You are a great inspiration! Gina

I hope you all don't mind if I jump in. I've been lurking for a while and now feel inspired to participate.
Last week was a great one for me. I think I am on the raod to success, as long as I can keep it up. I really paid attention to what I was eating last week and keeping a very close eye on portion size. I made several conscious choices to not eat extra servings or indulge in sweets when I was feeling frustrated. I don't feel that I deprived myself this past week. I also made it to the gym 5 times! Whooo Hooo!!! My reward for my efforts was 2 lbs lost. :) Only 78 more to go!
This is the beginning of new month. I feel inspired to really watch my food choices and keep up with the exercise, especially as the holidays are looming. I am a bit worried about packing on the pounds once the Halloween candy starts (and the treats don't let up until the new year).
I can't wait until I can have my own fashion show and model my dive suit for my darling BF. I have not been able to fit into it for about 4 years. I am determined to be able to fit into it in the next 6 months - then have my darling take me on a tropical vacation. :D

Darn! I wrote out a long note to everyone and got booted off the Internet. Guess that's what I get for being so long-winded :) .
Anyway - here's the shortened version!
Thanks to everyone for their support! I so need it right now!
Amanda - it did feel good to get back to it mentally, but it nearly killed me physically :). No more long hiatus for me!!
SaraEmily - I was there, so I kept our date :). But see above - hope yours was better!
Laura, AZ Lorena and other strugglers - We can do it! Go for it!
Ann - Congrats on a great week - hopefully my report will be as good next week!
RobinC - Welcome and congrats on a great week!
GinaO - Please forgive my bad memory, but what do you do for weight training? I ask because I think this has made a BIG difference for me. I used to be very half-hearted about it and concentrated mostly on cardio. Now I make it a point to get in a really good, challenging weight workout 3 times a week (but that's just the particular program I'm working with - no magic number in 3 times a week or anything - it's the challenging part that's most important). Anyway, I was just wondering how weight training fits into your present work out since you wrote that you have some stubborn weight you'd like to lose.
Okay, this time I wrote in on Wordpad so I wouldn't lose my message again! There!
I almost hate to throw my week into the pile. Since DH is out of town still, I had frozen pizza and junk food most of the week. The healthiest thing I had was vitamins. But I'm sure my caloric intake was still low. It just wasn't good for me. I did exercise lots last week. I taught 2 classes and hit the gym 3 other days.
My scale at home broke so no idea if this aweful eating is causing any damage. Normally I'd weigh myself, if at all, first thing in the morning before eating or drinking anything. But the scale at the gym seemed ok after estimating the weight of the clothes. I need to schedule another body fat check.
I'm happy to hear everyone drinking water. I have managed to do that all week and encourage each of you to raise your glass and toast to the inspiration you each provide. Cheers!

Sounds like you are doing fantastic AZLorena!
We went to Macaroni Grill last night and I had an Insalata Fiorentina - chicken, spinach, orzo, sundried tomatoes, olives, capers - it was very yummy and satisfying. I don't think it had too many calories and I have some left for lunch today.
I did get up this morning and put 30 minutes on my Nordic Track! Not much but it's a start!!
Have a good, healthy day everyone.

One of the big changes in my exercise regimen was adding weight training. I am trying to explain to my darling BF that cardio focused exercising is not the only way to burn calories. One does not have to be moving fast to burn calories.
I love the weight training. I've been using the weight room at the Y, rather than the machines. It's taken a bit of courage not to be intimidated and scared off by the young kids pumping as much as they can as fast as they can.
I've been doing some of the recommended exercises from past issues of Shape magazine. I also just ordered a couple of books of Barnes & Noble.com. One by Kathy Smith and the other from Runners World. I hope these will give more insight on how to develop my own training regimen.

For those who mentioned joining me in a 21 day challenge for TaeBo, or any other exercise, I am for it. It probably won't be until the first week of November though due to soccer and other things that would interfere with the 21 day period. Let's wait a couple of weeks and discuss it then. If we were to start around the 1st, we would be done before Thanksgiving . That would work for me.

It's so great to hear from everyone! I had a mediocre week- 2 step classes and 2 walks. I got out of the groove of getting up to walk in the morning, and I really need that base! Back on the wagon tomorrow morning. The truth is (I think) that I dislike getting up early less than I dislike spending my cozy evening time exercising. So my plan is to be more conscientious about my morning and/or lunchtime workouts so I can have evenings to cook and do what I choose. Goal: 3 morning workouts and 3 lunch workouts- we'll see how I do!
As for food, I ate out A LOT- lunch and dinner some days so I've been overeating even though I've been making good choices, if you know what I mean. Back on the cooking wagon this week- I really miss it!
Funnybone & other challenge seekers- Keep me posted on the challenge. I think a great idea would be 30 minutes/any kind of exercise per day for 21 days. I'm willing to do it sometime in October with anyone else who's up for it!
Take good care and thanks for being here everyone- you inspire me!

Okay, I've never posted on this thread, but I always read it for inspiration. Hopefully joining in will help me stick with things.
The summer was really bad for me...we moved, I traveled a lot for work, etc. So last week I started swimming 3 mornings a week. This week I plan to add yoga 2 nights a week and Sat morning. I also walk to and from work every day (sometimes 2x if I come home for lunch).
My food choices lately haven't been the best, so I really need to focus on cooking.

I haven't posted here in a long time, but I'm back on the posting wagon now, good week or bad. Last week was fortunately a pretty good week. Exercise-wise, it was the best week I've had in a while. I worked out 6 of 7 days, in some form or another. On Monday and Friday, I ran and lifted weights. Tuesday, I went to a kickboxing class. Wednesday, EFX and stair climber at the gym, and weights again. Saturday, DH & I played racquetball, and Sunday, we went mountain biking. Thursday was my day off (Must See TV!). We also took the dogs for 20 minute walks on 3 days. I made over 10,000 steps everyday last week except Thursday.
Eating has been pretty good too. I've been cooking almost exclusively from CL, and I've been trying very hard to eat more veggies and whole grains. I only ate out a couple of times last week, and tried to eat healthy when I did (grilled chicken sandwich, no mayo). I'm still working on portion control, which is my biggest challenge as far as eating goes.
On the down side, my clothes aren't fitting great, and according to the scale at the gym last week, I'm at my highest weight EVER. That's discouraging for me, even though I try never to let myself get discouraged by the scale. I hate judging by numbers, especially when I do quite a bit of strength training, but my clothes sure aren't telling the story I want to hear either. I also weigh myself very sporadically, so I'm sure I don't get a very consistent or accurate picture. I should just ignore it, but I'm apparently one who is motivated by results. Right now I'm not seeing much, but I'll try to keep plugging along...

Alysha-
My "weight training" consists of going to Curves for Women. While it is structured as an aerobic workout using hydrolic machine for 30 seconds then walking, running in place for 30 seconds, 3 times around the circuit for a total of 30 minutes, I work the machines as hard as I can, then "rest" in between. I have noticed a lot of improvement in my arms as far as toning, but could probably stand to do more. I started in the beginning of July and it still feels challenging. When it starts to get easy, I will probably get some wrist and ankle weights.
The most frustrating thing about losing these last 5 or so pounds is that I know I could do it in two weeks if I just ate about 1000 calories per day, but I really want to take a healthier approach and do it without my body shutting down.
21 Day Challengers - I am up for that now or in November or both. I am traveling for 2 weeks straight in November, so it would be a big, but fun challenge for me. Gina

My week started off well. Thanks to everyone here, I dusted off my TaeBo tapes and popped the "Basic" one in. Haven't done it in months, but I got through it that night. I felt so good about it, I swore I would do it every morning that week. So, the next morning, I got up early and halfway through I thought I was going to collapse! No TaeBo within 12 hours of my last session! Yikes!
This morning I rollerbladed 14 miles (YAY!) admist a sea of huge grasshoppers, snakes and woolybears. The grasshoppers were disgusting - but I felt so good about being out. I really should do that more often.
Tomorrow is weigh-in day for me. I'm looking for a mini-goal of 5 pounds. That will take me to 18 pounds lost, bringing me to 200#, and within 1 pound of 10%. What a week that will be!

Well, thanks to everyone for giving me the mental push that I needed tonight. I went to the gym and walked 45 minutes on the treadmill and then some strength exercises.
Marian...
We love Macaroni Grill. We actually only go there for one particularly bad thing. They have an appetizer there (I can't remember what it is actually called) that is like Italian Nachos. Pasta chips with olives, sausage and an asiago cheese sauce. We have salad, wine and this appetizer thing. I am looking forward to it.
Gina O....I read the bit of what you wrote about your ex an his luke warm reception to your bikinito my hubby. He had a good chuckle about that.
Welcome to ErinL and RobinC. We are really glad to have you posting with us.
Back to my DH....he was sitting in here in the computer room when I was reading through this thread. He was listening intently as I told him all about you guys just like we were all out to lunch yesterday. It got us to thinking. Wouldn't it be great to have a web site set up for us to post our pictures and a little bio of ourselves to help put a face with our names/journies. DH said that he would help me set it up. Anyone interested in something like this? I think that it could be a lot of fun! Anyway, its just an idea.....if no one is interested, it won't hurt my feelings. :)

AZLorena,
Just to let you know, we do have a website set up where we can post pictures. It was started more as a place to chat, but that doesn't seem to be happening these days. I had been thinking for a while now that it would be fun to post a series of before and after pictures or something along those lines. Not only to get to know each other better, but to show some success stories for more inspiration.
The site I'm talking about is called "We're Cooking Now!". It is a private site that you can join by invitation. It has a place for message boards, a recipe page, and a photo album among other things. There is a function that would enable us to set up a special album for HLSG if we'd like to.
Anyway, I'm not saying that we need to use the WCN site, but if you want to use something that is already set up and ready to go, please feel free! There are a few photos posted there already of some of our members. It may not have the flexibility that you are looking for, but you might want to check it out.
If you want to join it to see how it's set up, just email me and I can send you an invitation. Good idea!

WOW!
Everybody here has great new goals!
I have just reset my goals, too, and am planning to stay very focused on them, especially through the next three months (holiday eating season).
I started back on my bodyforlife exercise program. I had excellent results before with it, and have re-focused after being a bit lazy with strength training lately.
Lindrusso- I got an invitation for that web site, but something was goofy and I couldn't make it work to get in.....
Everybody drink water, do your Montly breast exams and focus on getting your CALCIUM this week, okay! :D :D

I haven't checked in awhile, but I stopped by for some encouragement and inspiration. Alysha, I'm so proud of your renewed effort! All of you- I thank you just for being here!
I'm checking in from the road- day 8 of an 11 day road trip. My anxiety going into my travel season this Fall was getting out of my healthy eating/exercise habit and gaining weight as I did last Fall.
Exercise
SO far, very good!! A week ago Tuesday, the last thing I did before leaving town was to go to kickboxing. I'd also lifted weights and did the Stairmaster earlier in the day.
Wednesday- 40 mins resistance exercises with my resistance band + ab work in the a.m; 2 mile walk, 3 mile run in the evening
Thursday 2 mile walk, 3 mile run in the evening
Friday2 mile walk; 3 mile run in evening
Saturday 3 mile walk; 20 minutes abs and upper body resistance
Sunday 40 minutes full body free weights/resistance/abs; 1 hour stairmaster
Monday REST- first day off from exercise in over a week
Today 40 mins resistance exercises with my resistance band + ab work in the a.m; 2 mile walk, 3 mile run in the evening
Diet So far all of my hotels have had a refrigerator and microwave. Lunches have been out, due to the nature of my work, but dinners have been trips to WIld Oats or WHole Foods for soups, salads, sandwiches and breakfasts are cereal, fruit, sometimes an English muffin. Until today I was keeping track of my calories and keeping on target- I have been over my 1700-1800/day goal, but I'm doing MUCH better than if I was eating meals out. I let myself have one pig out day (Sunday) but still stayed within reason (okay, so dinner was a lemon sorbet cone from Ben and Jerry's and microwave popcorn!).

I have been avoiding these threads for several weeks! I have not been "bad," just not enthusiastic about being "good." I am starting a new push to lose my final 6 pounds. I have been working on this since January and am tired of being in "weight loss mode" all the time. (Geez, it shouldn't take 10 months to lose 15 pounds!). I have supposedly been on 1500 calories a day for several months (ha!) but am now back to writing it all down. That is the only way for me to truly keep track of it. Still keeping up with walking and some light weight training, although fitting exercise in is getting harder as the days get shorter and the kids get busier with school and activities. My goal is to get to my goal weight (146) before Thanksgiving. I am at 152 now so that seems reasonable.
Good luck to everyone who has set goals. You inspire me.

Wow, Julie, (KValley), you are doing so well staying on track while on the road...
BTW, You are missed around here, not hearing from you as much lately, I am sure due to your travels.
I am impressed that you have sleuthed out the Whole foods there, etc.
Keep up the great work! I know how difficult it can be to stay on a healthy program while on the road, however with proper planning, as you know, it can be accomplished! I do it all the time....have a safe journey.

Thank you so much for the encouragement and for being such a great inspiration, Paula. And for telling me that I am missed :) I love being able to take you all on the road with me- it makes me feel so connected to "normal" life, although reading "Great Food" makes me so homesick for my kitchen and fills me with longing to cook.
I am certain that I am missing out on some incredible restaurants, but for my emotional, as well as physical, health, I just have to avoid eating out! Besides, our accountants probably love me- my meal expenses are so minimal!!

Katie-
Welcome! Let me guess, did you go to Penn State? My husband went there and so I'm linked too (by marriage- I'm a Tar Heel at heart).
As for the challenge...I'm ALMOST ready to belly up. If we start on Tuesday after the holiday, we'd end on the 29th or we could start the 10th and end on the 30th (the day before Halloween). Like I said above, for me it will be committing to get at least 30 minutes of some kind of exercise every day (I need to get back into the daily/no excuses mode). I'll also be trying to squeeze an extra 90 minutes/week in there too because my overall goal is 300 minutes per week, but that will be above and beyond the challenge.
BTW, I am eating like powerhouse lately- someone hit the emergency brake! I haven't really felt hungry in a week. Yuck!

Just thought I would chime in for my second time here. I had a not so bad week. I usually have 2 diet soda's a day but this week am happy to report I cut down, dramatically, to only 1 diet soda the WHOLE WEEK! I was pretty proud of myself; so as a reward, I had very fattening enchiladas. I have been walking, a bit, as work as forced us out of our parking lot so I've been walking almost 2 miles a day this week, just to and from work.
Next week will be better!!:p

Amber-
Hurray for you! I am totally addicted to Diet Coke, and know how hard it can be to cut back.
I like Cristal Light, but I can't find it here. I just recently discovered that KoolAid is really good when made with equal or some other sugar substitute. So, I've been drinking that a lot this week. This week I think I will check out splenda to see if I can get rid of the aspartame intake as well.
Good on ya, Matie! :)

I will be in desperate need of the CHALLENGE after this coming week. I am going on vacation to San Francisco w/ my sisters and when my family gets together we eat like crazy! So I can't start until I get back but.... You can be positive that I will be motivated to lose those vacation pounds. This thread is just the motivation needed.
Yes, Melissa: I'm a Penn State grad. Although this year its a little depressing, but I guess we can't the best at football every year.
I'll be back next week for the much needed motivation.
