Hi,

While in Amsterdam last year, I saw for myself how Indonesian tastes and flavors have influenced Dutch cuisine (just look at the popularity of rijstafel (sp.?-mental block- http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/redface.gif)!). I had delicious curries and curry-flavored everything, and would love to replicate some of these flavors at home. So far, no luck finding any recipes in cookbooks or on websites. I m looking specifically for a sauce for Kip-Curry (kip kerrie) - chicken curry, I believe. This curry sauce is really different from Indian or Thai curry sauces - it is quite mild, creamy and, well, DIVINE.

Any help out there, either in the form of recipes or cookbook recommendations? Any help would be appreciated! I did pick up a sauce mix while there, which was actually pretty good, and I can tell you that it had, among other things: cream, sugar, curry powder, broth, coriander, cayenne pepper, paprika, and pepper. So that s a start...if I can t find any recipe or cookbooks, I will just have to experiment like crazy

I have been able to find sources online from which I can buy sauce mixes, but would prefer to make it from scratch. I have also seen some sites that look that they should have a recipe, but for some reason or other don t...even on http://www.indochef.com I couldn t find anything! Mainly what I found were restaurant menus which only served to make me reeeaaallly hungry! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/wink.gif

Susann - if you haven t already done it, Indonesia would be a delicious choice for country of the month!!

Thanks in advance!

Natasha, I found some recipes that look promising on the following sites:
http://www.lmcreations.com/mkic/indo_recipes/
http://www.indokitchen.com

On this last one, Indokitchen, you have to hunt for the "clickable" links, since some that look clickable aren't. I finally found some clickable ones at the bottom. There's also a search box for keywords -- but be sure to click the "Go" button instead of just hitting the enter key, or you'll wind up on the same page again. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/rolleyes.gif

Of course, maybe we should be looking for Dutch cooking rather than Indonesian, since the recipe you're looking for may be a Dutch adaptation. What do you think?

Phoebe,

Thank you! I just visited these sites and there are two curry recipes that seem worth trying. The second one is probably closer to what I had, so I will start with that.

I asked myself the same question about whether I should really be looking for Dutch or Dutchified (I know, I know, that isn t a word http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif ) recipes, instead of purely Indonesian ones. So I started my quest by looking mostly at Dutch websites and sources, then, when that wasn t coming up with anything, I expanded the search. One problem is that I don t know how different the curry I m trying to create IS from pure Indonesian cooking. I guess I will just try the recipes and see if any adjustments need to be made to make them more like what I had...

Thanks again. I do appreciate it! Have a great evening.

Natasha,

Since I LOVE to research (I know, I know... it's a disease) I spent quite a while poking around on this. There are several recipes for kip curry listed in Netscape's search if you go into their International sites and click on Indonesia. The catch: they're all in Dutch. If no one you know speaks Dutch, I found a way around this. But since it's time-consuming and only you know exactly what you're looking for, check this out. Look up some of those recipes (there was one which was a possibility, labeled Chicken Curry in English, of course the text was completely in Dutch.) Copy the recipe and paste it on the following site: http://rivendel.com/~ric/resources/inter.html
They offer a free on-line Dutch to English translation, but it will be word by word and in some cases you'll have to check alternate translations for words. (Instructions explain how)
Granted, this is a last-ditch attempt for finding your recipe-- but hey! If you want it that badly, go for it, I say...

Good luck! (BTW, that was fun. I'm going to have to try that gizmo out.) And thanks to KristaMB on the "Country of the Month" thread for giving me the idea with Alta Vista's translator.

Gail! I owe you one! Silly me - never thought to go into Netscape and then into Indonesia. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/redface.gif I went to a couple of search engines but didn t find anything for the Netherlands or Indonesia specifically. I will have to check this out ASAP. And so much the better if the recipes are in Dutch! They may be more likely to be exactly what I m looking for, and I do know enough Dutch for this purpose. Looks like with these leads and Phoebe s, we will be having a curryfest around here! (Not complaining in the least!)

Those translating sites are hilarious!! I had a colleague who would use them occasionally when he got material about overseas transactions, then come into my office and tell me what he came up with. Some of the really literal translations had us on the floor!! Still, those services definitely can come in handy.

Thanks for taking the time to research this so thoroughly. I will have to send you a heaping portion of curry through cyberspace http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

Gee, I'm glad to know you can translate the Dutch. That makes things pretty easy, then. Glad I mentioned it.

I translated one of the recipes just for the heck of it BEFORE writing to you, and I can see how tedious a process it must be doing the alternate translations. I noted, for example, the choice of the word "petroleum" which somehow I figured didn't belong in a recipe. I am eager to try using that translator with languages I know, to see just how useful a tool it really is. Looks like fun, though, and it opens whole new worlds for recipes from foreign countries for those willing to sit down and work with the word-by-word a bit.

Anyway, I'm glad I was able to help. Also glad I found myself a new toy! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif

Natasha, when you find the kip curry you're looking for, be sure to post the recipe for all of us!

And Gail, was the petroleum what you were supposed to fry things in? Gee, that lends a whole new perspective to the idea of a mineral-rich diet! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif

Ain't research fun?

Petrole-YUM!!! I can hardly wait to try these recipes. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/wink.gif

Phoebe, I certainly will post the curry recipe for everyone! Looking forward to experimenting.
