Ah, Cookgirl I am stalking you.......... Kidding. Advertising is what keeps a magazine or any type of media going for that matter. If People wants to put thier adds in there, more power to CL, it means it is getting a good circulation, and People wants the exposure. I mean, what does beer have to do with football? The players certainly aren't drinking on the field, and yet beer companies are some of the largest advertisers of the sport.........

I do get 2 cooking magazines (both from the same parent company) that do not have advertisements in them, BUT they only come out every other month.
To be perfectly honest with you, I don't know the ad that you are talking about because I really don't pay much attention to the ads anyways. So, I guess I would have to say that sure, it would be nice to have an advertisment free magazine, but a magazine is a business and they want to make a profit, which means advertising.

I must say that, compared to many magazines I see, such as Martha Stewart's "Living" and Oprah's new "O", etc. CL doesn't have nearly as many ads. In those magazines, it is hard to find the articles and when you do see them, they are 1/2 page long. At least in CL, as you say, they are easy to ignore, or, if interesting, at least don't overtake the magazine where you are having to hunt for actual articles.
I also hope that CL does not do like its sister-magazines, such as Southern Living, and allow those ads that look like articles. They drive me CRAZY!

I'm glad I'm not just being insensitive.
Although...Holly, I think I might actually have been brainwashed by the beer thing. They're not related? Ooh, but when it comes to men...I think they are inseparable! I get your drift, though.
Natasha, I think you may have something with the class of the ads. We didn't really get into that. She seemed to complain about quantity, but what I think got her started was that Jennifer Lopez ad (definitely a quality issue with her. Of course, I thought it contained quality humor).
I'll take an ad any day if my magazine's frequency is at stake! (Or the price.)

If you look in any fashion magazine or any other kind for that matter, that is all there is these days! I almost expect it now. There really isn't much we can do about it, I think that CL is not nearly as bad about ads as some other magazines.

I agree with most of you that advertising is needed if not prices would be higher etc. What I do after reading ANY cooking magazine before filing it I actually pull out the ads you won't believe how much thinner the magazines get and then I can fit them better in my bookcase. My husband just asked me what I was doing the night before recycle pick up day... I told him I went through magazines and pull out ads etc. Now I must say some ads are quite interesting regarding kitchen gadgets, china, some have recipes (which I keep).

Sorry. I've gone post crazy!
I recently got into a dispute with a friend over that People advertisement (you know the one) in Cooking Light. I told her I was going to let the BB users give a verdict.
She is freaked out that the ads were in there. It doesn't bother me!! She's caught up on Jennifer Lopez' outfit, and I think that one in particular is hillarious if you read the caption.
Her point, though is that she doesn't want to see all that sort of commercial advertising or whatever.
Well, I just don't care as long as I get my recipes. I'm smart enough to recognize an advertisement and turn the page. She says its the principle of the matter.
I guess I understand, but I just don't think it's a big deal. Am I wrong?

I'm with you. After all, isn't advertising the main money maker for magazines? If it wasn't for advertising, we wouldn't have the magazine!

Cookgirl - does your friend think there should be no advertising, or that the advertising should be more tasteful? (Or both?)
I agree with you too. Without advertising, naturally the magazine's prices would be much higher, the magazine could well be smaller, or it simply wouldn't exist (as Abby pointed out). I know that some people prefer European (incl. British) magazines partly because there tend to be less ads; however, the magazines are more expensive and usually smaller. Same goes for British and European TV shows (or American public TV for that matter) - there are no or fewer commercials, but less variety than we're used to on American commercial channels ... it's all a matter of choice, I guess! I personally don't mind a bit of advertising because I'm so used to tuning it out. This doesn't mean, of course, that sometimes it doesn't irritate the heck out of me! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/biggrin.gif
This makes me think about how everything is getting increasingly commercial. It seems that lately - very lately - things are getting worse this way. Just a few months ago I was in a mall in Pittsburgh that had a set of mall rules posted by the entrance. Right at the bottom of the "official mall rules" there was a plug for Visa! And in a restaurant in the same mall there was a little note about preferring American Express! Even amusement parks, etc. need to put corporations in their names ... how did everything survive before this became the norm?
Anyway, sorry to ramble. Enjoy Vegas and your first anniversary!! You're the second person I've heard gushing about a live Sting show lately ... glad you enjoyed the concert.

I do what Vanessa does, and it makes a big difference when all the ads are ripped out. Some ads are funny, stupid, & take up too much space but, thats how they make $-& we get our magazines. (Martha's really got it going on though doesn't she? sheesh!). The only reason I like them is if there is a recipe I want to tear out of a mag. I don't mess up any other recipes I want to try by tearing it out, because there's an ad on the other side of it. http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif Zinnia

Hmm, no advertising, probably no magazine. The advertising in CL really doesn't bother me because I mostly don't pay much attention, unless it's something I'm interested in. I have to say, though, People is a very big name in the magazine world and I'm sure it is a very good sign that they want to advertise in CL, as Holly said before. It's really not much advertising if you compare it to the fashion magazines or the women's magazines. I hate even leafing through them at the doctor's office because they're all ads!
