Has anyone made any of these? The Monte Cristo looked particularly good. Any reviews??

Hi,
I made the tuna melt-it was great!
My sister made the Monte Cristo and it looked and smelled wonderful! I will try that one next!

Very enthusiastic thumbs up for the turkey club. Very easy & quick to make & delicious. I made one modification: I can't stand processed american cheese, so I substituted sliced sharp cheddar from the deli counter.

Thanks for the feedback! I bought the stuff to make the Monte Cristos this weekend. I love to get this when I eat out....never thought of making it myself!

I would really like to try the Monte Cristo also. Can anyone recommend a good low calorie side dish to serve with this one?

As for side dishes with the sandwiches, CL has had some great macaroni and potato salad recipes over the years. If you wanted something really easy, you could serve those no-fat potato chips. (called "wow" I think) They are really good -- it's unbelievable that they have no fat. Of course, I guess that olestra (the fake fat that makes them taste good) can give some people unpleasant side effects. So far, I have not experienced any of these and have become addicted!

I also made the Monte Cristo and served it w/Grace's slaw. Both were a hit!!!

Oh Crystal -- you guys make me laugh! I'm glad that cole slaw is such a hit, and I've been dying to make those Monte Christos myself, and because it sounds good together, I think I'll whip up a batch of cole slaw too! Thanks for the suggestion..

The slaw does sound good. Beth I am addicted to the WOWS as well. They are as good as the real thing and I never have had any side effects from them either. That would be a good idea as well.

Another thumbs up for the Monte Cristo. I got a disbelieving "No Way!" when I told my boyfriend that it was much lighter then the one from our favorite resuarant. "But it tastes just the same!"

Grace-
I have made your cole slaw countless times this summer. I have brought it to every bbq I've gone to, it's different than the ordinary mac/potato salad and everyone loves it!! Thanks again for passing along the recipe!!

I'll second the previous comment. I've made the slaw several times and it's always a hit! Thanks again.

A low-fat side dish I almost always serve with sandwiches is a baked fries kind of thing. I simply slice a potato and lay in a single layer on a sprayed cookie sheet. Bake at 400 for 20+ minutes (depends on how thick you slice and how done you like them). I sometimes sprinkle salt and pepper on them or some other seasoning. Serve with ketchup. I love these and they're non-fat.

i was at work yesterday when i decided to make the monte cristo sandwich. well, i did a recipe search, printed out the recipe, got the ingredients...when i got home, i realized that it was a different recipe than the one in this month's issue.
it was delicious nonetheless.
the 2 major differences were: 1. it called for turkey (in addition to the ham and cheese) and 2. the sauce was made w/ dijan, red currant jelly, lemon juice and water.
i'll have to try this month's recipe when i run out of the jelly--red currant, how often will i use that?!? http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

Like RunnerKim, I also make oven fries. I use olive oil flavored spray and really enjoy them with paprika and celery salt! Sometimes, I will use low fat ranch dressing instead of ketchup.

Red currant jelly makes a wonderful glaze for fruit tarts and cakes - just put it in a saucepan, heat it gently and brush it with a pastry brush over fresh fruits that are placed on top of a fruit tart...let me know if you need a recipe for the tarts, but just thought I'd give you an idea for all that extra currant jelly! (I'd probably eat it on toast or pancakes, though, since I LOVE red currants! I have a red currant bush in my backyard! http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

WendyW, the celery salt sound yummy, I'll have to try that. I like to make my oven fries on a pizza stone. I really think they turn out crispier that way.

Love the Monte Cristo. I can still remember the first time I ever had one (about 20 years ago at a restaurant in Walt Disney World)... strange the things one remembers. Anyway, when I make a MC, I'll use raspberry preserves since I don't usually have red currant on hand.

I think I am in the minority, but I wasn't that crazy about the Monte Cristo. I thought the egg made it taste a bit too much like French Toast. My wife just put a little margarine on the bread and fried it that way and we both enjoyed her crispy sandwich more than my soggy one.

Here's Grace slaw recipe!! Enjoy!!
1 (I think it's 16 oz?) bag of Dole shredded cabbage and carrots (or any brand)
- or -
2 bags of that broccoslaw stuff (also great - probably has more vitamins)
1/3 cup sugar
1/2 tsp. salt
1/8 tsp. pepper
1/4 cup milk
1/2 cup non-fat mayo
1/4 cup buttermilk
1-1/2 Tblsp. cider vinegar
2-1/2 Tblsp. fresh lemon juice
Mix the dressing ingredients well in a small bowl with a wire whisk until the sugar is dissolved and the dressing is creamy. Pour over the cabbage or broccoslaw and toss together well. Cover and refrigerate 2 hours (but I think it's still great even if you eat it right away, which I always do!!)

Thanks Crystal for posting Grace's slaw! CathyS, I will have to try suing the pizza stone for the fries, thanks for the idea! I absolutely love this bb, I have learned so much here and love interacting with fellow "foodies"!
