Hello!
I just wanted everyone to know that Amazon.com is currently running a sale on the Food Saver.....$99 and if you spend over $100 your shipping is free.
I will FINALLY be getting one and also purchased another one as a Christmas gift.
(Grace will be so pleased for me. I've wanted a 'stuff and suck' for soooo long! Now I just need a chest freezer!)

Happy shopping!

In Minnesota, we saw "refurbished" Foodsavers for $89.99. I wonder if this is the same thing??!!?? Hard to believe they'd be going for this low......

They are brand new.......never been used. They have had this sale before and I missed it, but others were lucky. So, I've stalked Amazon til they had the sale again. And now I've pounced!

Sandy, I just looked at the Amazon.com site...the $99 one is the same one I have, that I paid $129 for. Grab it!! You almost grabbed the refurbished for $89, this is better...as I said in MN, this one doesn't have the 'manual' button, but for what you're wanting it for I don't think you'd miss it. It has the wide mouth jar sealer and one canister, the small one I use for peeled garlic cloves in the fridge. It's the 550 Model, and it's a great one! Don't buy extra bags, get them at Costco. Don't buy the 'standard' jar sealer, the wide mouth is all you need! :D

Go! Get off this board and go order a FoodSaver! Your cheese is molding as we speak!!

I have the 550 model also, and recently ordered the standard jar sealer for it. If you want to seal anything into a Mason jar, the standard jar sealer is the mouth you are looking for.

Beacooker, I meant that wide mouth Mason Jars are much easier to use, and easier to get stuff in and out of! Since the model comes with the wide mouth sealer already, I don't think the standard mason jar sealer is really needed, since those jars are kinda hard to work with in my opinion! :)

I've resisted and resisted, but can resist no longer.

I just went on Amazon.com and ordered my own food saver (the 550 that's on sale). At least I overcame the urge to buy another $50 worth of stuff, to save on the $12 shipping.

I didn't know there was such a thing as wide mouth Mason jars. And now I have a million skinny mouth ones! DH made some really good homemade bbq sauce that he wanted to seal, so he made me buy some Mason jars. Well, when I got home we saw that the size I got didn't fit with our sealer (at that time, we didn't know that there were 2 sizes of sealer), so like a dunce I just went out and got a box of larger Mason jars!!! Of course, that didn't work either, so we had to use alternative means of transporting the sauce. Now that I have the smaller sealer, I have to come up with uses for all these Mason jars!

Woo hoo! My DH & I have been lurking on Amazon.com each Friday too since someone posted here a month or two ago that it goes on sale periodically. Unfortunately, the last few Fridays we have forgotten to check out the Friday specials. But lo and behold, my DH called me from work today to say he was ordering it. Yay! Yay! Now to only find room in our new freezer to store all the stuff we can seal in our Food Saver (I've managed to fill it up pretty well so far with a few trips to Sam's Club).

Glad to share this excitement with others who "understand".

I'm tempted!

You've been convincing me over the past few months that I need a Food Saver...and I think this is finally the time to get one.

But! Please tell me how you use the Food Saver with Mason jars. I thought it could only seal in plastic. I have a ton of jars from the years pre-kids when I made a lot of jam. I'm interested in how I can use the two together.

Thanks! Now, watch...the sale will be over by the time I check it out!

Breadmama, sealing in mason jars is almost easier than sealing in the bags! :) The unit comes with a jar-sealing cap attached to a hose that you plug into the FoodSaver unit. The cap covers the flat cover that you use with the mason jar (wide mouth) and seals! All you do is twist the cover ring on top! They're perfect for sealing a half jar of pasta sauce or applesauce in the fridge (transfer leftovers to mason jars) or storing peeled garlic cloves in the fridge. I also have one in the cupboard holding my brown sugar! There's a never ending list of uses for this thing! :D

Just a thank you to you Jewel for the garlic suggestion. I have a mason jar in my frig as we speak with peeled garlic. I love the mason jar attachment. At present I have in my cupboards.....breakcrumbs, walnuts, cornmeal, raisins, brown sugar, rice, grapenuts. I also have some 1/2 pint jelly wide mouth jars that hold small amounts of goodies, such as, diced apricots, dried figs that were used for recipes. Uses of mason jars are endless! :)

I have a silly question - does something special happen on Fridays on Amazon.com? Is that when they post their good specials? I ask because I just checked the site and the Foodsaver is 129.99! I would love to pick one up and love it even more to be $99!! Thanks for the info!

That sale is until today, the 15th. That's what it said last week anyway.

Sometimes if you put things in your "cart" the price will be different. Have you tried that? You may want to call them and speak with someone. I just checked the site and they show it at $99 on the front of the "Kitchen and Housewares" section and it says until the 15th.

Another Food Saver victim, reporting in. DH actually lobbied for it, after using his friend's on a fishing trip to vacumn seal the salmon they had caught. We got the 550 and two rolls of bags.

I have to admit that I'm a little afraid of it--maybe I'll pull up all the old Food Saver threads to get the inspiration to get it out and use it. I think I'll pull out my chunks of parmesan from the freezer tonight and 'suck and seal' them as my first experiment.

Does anyone use the food saver canisters? I think one came free with mine.

I do!! :) I use mainly the small ones for berries and garlic cloves when I don't have a mason jar to spare, but the larger canister works really well for snack foods that can go stale quickly like pretzels and some cereals that are better for snacking than covering with milk! :D

I also order a dried vegetable mixture from www.justtomatoes.com that is a perfect snack, but it can go 'soft' in a week if it's not kept airtight. My largest canister is filled with this freeze-dried mix of peas, corn, bell peppers, carrots and tomatoes, just waiting for me to dig a cup or so out!

Don't be intimidated by this applicance Beth! It's very simple to operate, and if something happens and it doesn't do a bag correctly, pull it out and try it again! The money I've saved already on wasted meat in the freezer has already paid for the FoodSaver... :D

Beth....as Jewel has stated this is very easy to use. I use the canisters too. I have lettuce in the large one and the lettuce has lasted up two weeks or more (experiment) with no rusting or wilting. I also use the canisters for cereals or anything that I need more space than the mason jars. I bought some extra canisters from Ebay.

I got a Food Saver for my birthday last month. I like to buy my meat at Costco, but it just me and my darling BF at home, the Food Saver comes in soooo handy. I am sitting here at work with not much to do and thinking about my new food saver and my weekend Costco meat purchases just waiting to be stuffed and sucked, ;)

I've only used the bags, but I can see that I am going to have to try the jars.

My order just went through with Amazon, and I can now consider myself a member of the "Stuff and Suck Sorority!" :) (It's late and I'm punchy!)

Thanks for everyone's advice. Nothing like saving some money on something you've wanted for a while!

My food saver came in teh mail yesterday, and I used it on:

Frozen corn I had opened to use yesterday
Fresh snow peas I had opened yesterday
2 loaves of bread to freeze
Open box of cereal
Big bag of open walnuts

I think there was more stuff, but I've forgotten already.

It really is a pretty cool contraption.

Can you marinate in it?

Mine is shipping today, so I hope to get it by the weekend.

As for marinating, I think the infomercial shows they putting the stuff in a pyrex or other dish, and then sealing it that way. I know there have been past discussions on this as well. I think if you have too much liquid in the bag, it will not seal as it will suck into the machine. I think this is what was said.

Have fun!

Okay, I'm trying to figure out why you would seal a bag/box of cereal. Do you keep opening it each time and resealing to keep it fresh, or what? And what's the best way to seal loaves of bread?

Perhaps I need to see the infomercial? (I guess I can see some of these uses when I get the video, but it's always good to get ideas from the friends on this BB.)

Thanks!

We don't use our FoodSaver for cereal, but I know some people do! It is more convenient to seal cereal in a large canister, however, because it's just easier to get in and out of. In our house, cereal doesn't stay open long enough to get stale, so we don't worry about it! DH is a cereal vacuum...

As for marinating, invest in the $25 square marinating canister. You can find those on just about any website that features Tilia products. Here's the link to Chefs Catalog, and it explains the canister:

http://www.chefscatalog.com/product.jhtml?sku_id=1297

I love the canister because I can do 'overnight' marinating in 30 minutes! It opens up the fibers of the meat and the marinade just sucks right into it! I use it at least once or twice per week!

Woohoo!! Suck some cheese Baby!! :D Start with that cheese you were complaining about! Then peel some garlic cloves and fill that little canister with ready-to-mince garlic! I peeled 5 heads of garlic in a half hour last night while DH did the dishes, and it's all ready and waiting in that canister in the fridge!! :p

Mamasue-
Ha! In my order with Amazon, I chose the Food Saver and a Silpat! :) (and a Calphalon pan...wanted to get the free shipping, and needed a new non-stick pan...)

The Silpat I ordered was about $4 less than Martha's price. I got my first one for a steal - $1 on clearance at Home Goods - they didn't know how to price it, it didn't have a tag, and I gladly snapped it up. Then I promptly decided that I needed another one to make my baking even easier!

I love kitchen things - and I can't wait to give the Food Saver a try!

Thanks for your suggestions. But, I have an old ice cream maker, but I never have the desire to make any. I don't eat much of it, and the kids love "TWIX" from Edy's. I don't want a silpat because I use parchment paper because I don't want another thing to wash. And, I have almost all the PC stones and bakeware.

I have a great collection of Calphalon, but I would like the pasta insert. Now, I have something to add to my list!!!!! I feel better!
