Ok - how many people have seen the haunted house kit that you can order from the most recent Martha By Mail catalog? It's some ridiculous price for templates and instructions. I have made several gingerbread houses so plan to follow the usual methods. My question - what do you think the roof is made from? A friend thinks it must be specially made cookies to be that small. I think it must be some type of candy but can't think of what. Any thoughts anyone?
I went to her website to look at the picture, and my husband and I both vote for licorice candies. There is a wafer or disk shaped variety you could look for.

First of all, I LOVED that gingerbread house! It was a little pricey though. My first thought was that the roof was made of Necco's but then I wasn't sure because of the color? I also thought that maybe they were included in the kit. Let me know if you try and make this, it's so cute!!

I think they look like thin mint cookies (like the kind the Girl Scouts sell), or maybe some kind of chocolate mint.

Shirley! I thought the same thing, but then I thought I was probably losing my mind. Thanks for the input!
I thought about those cookies too. Guess it's a question of scale. How big is that thing? Anyway, Keebler make Grasshopper chocolate mint cookies that are similar and available year round.

I thought of the thin mint or girl scout cookies too but thought they might be too big. I guess it's hard to tell without knowing the dimensions of the house. Well I plan on making it for my son's halloween party so will come up with something. If I go to the grocery store and just think haunted house roof I'm sure something will jump out at me. Thanks for the ideas http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/smile.gif

Maccmedia -
Good luck on making the house. Let us know what you use. Last time I made a gingerbread house I used licorice "bites". They were red, but you might find them in black. They definitely gave my house that "shingled" look without any trouble.
