ok, this is quite a broad question, but...
i'm turning 30 in a couple of weeks http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/eek.gif and my mom wants to know what i'd like for my bday dinner. i know, i know, it's a personal preference, BUT if you had your choice of a favorite meal, what would it be??

My favorite meal from my mom? I assume we're talking home cooked? My mom makes the most awesome manicotti I have ever had. She makes the shells (they're more like crepes) one at a time. They're so creamy tasting, too. And we'd need a big salad and garlic bread, too. (is my Italian showing??)
I always ask her to make me an angel food cake for dessert on my birthday, but she always messed it up! I don't know how. My neice ratted her out last time and said "Aunt Susan! We had to go to the store for ANOTHER cake! We made two cakes today!!".
Well, all good meals (IMO) revolve around Italian food, preferably some kind of pasta.
Happy birthday! I turned 30 last year. No dinner from mom, though. This year, my b-day is on Thanksgiving Day. Guess I get turkey!

I would probably choose pasta of some sort, or else seafood. What specifically would depend on my mood, or who was making it for me (e.g., if they have special dishes or things they make particularly well, or if there is a sentimental reason for picking something specific).
When I've had very special occasions coming up and have been asked to choose something, I have been known to "audition" things in advance so I know what will be special enough for the Big Dinner! How bad am I? Any excuse to have someone cook good meals for you... http://www.cookinglight.com/bbs/wink.gif
Have a very happy birthday and enjoy whatever you decide to have! Let us know.

My Mom was never much of a cook (she takes me out) and my Grandmother who lived with us did most of the cooking. My Grandfather grew up in Yugoslavia and Grandma learned the family favorite recipes (similar to Greek food) from his mother.
Some of the recipes were: stuffed peppers and tomatoes, chicken and rice with lemon and egg noodle soup, lamb shanks, and Italian style artichokes (recipe from her restaurant owner friend). Grandma also used to make a fantastic orange cake with orange frosting!
The funny thing is that she wasn't good with "everyday" food. She would overcook meat and the vegetables would become mush!
Have a wonderful birthday! Your 30's and 40's will be so much better than the 20's. Take it from someone who will be 41 in a couple of months. Let us know what you had for dinner.

Happy B-day! Lucky you!
As an aperitif, I love champagne/sparkling wine - very festive & celebratory. You could accompany with some caviar if you like it or some strawberries & good quality parmegiano/regiano cheese (brings out the flavor of the champagne). For dinner, I would start with a scrumptious salad (I love arugala) & then your favorite dinner that your mom makes. End with a decadent chocolate cake w/ fresh rasperries. Have a great b-day dinner!

Happy Birthday!!
I just turned 33 this week and I am going to moms this weekend for a home cooked meal. Its funny growing up I couldnt wait to get out on my own and try all those great veggies at the market. We were a meat, potato, and frozen veggie family. We eat alot of stir frys and pasta dishes, using all those good veggies but when I go home to moms I want comfort food. So, I will be celebrating with roast beef with yorshire pudding and potatoes and probably frozen corn!! I have made a special request for a chocolate cream pie. I hope you enjoy your meal no matter what you choose. I love just not having to cook that night, thats a gift within its self.
Happy Birthday wishes
Terri
