I know that there were several of us signed up for local Race for the Cure runs and walks these past few weeks. Kim W inspired me to look for a race during one of my road trips and today was it!

I ran a 5K this morning in Temecula- about 60 miles north of San Diego where I'm staying. Up at 5:00 to make 7:00 registration. I had a great time- a little lonely making the trek alone, but I'm so glad I went. The energy of the participants was infectious- I felt strong. And it was so inspiring to run with cancer survivors and with those running in the memory of loved ones.

How were your Race for the Cure runs/walks?

Oh, and take this as a reminder to do your monthly breast exam during your next shower!!

Well, due to a 6 alarm fire at a 40 story apartment building along the route 2 hours before starting time, it was cancelled until next year:( So, you ran for me too:)

Hey Julie you're so fine' you're so fine you blow my mind, Hey Julie!!

Way to go sister!! We had our Run for the Cure last month but I was sick and couldn't go in it:( I really admire you making the effort to do it alone in a strange place- another thing to add to my growing Why Julie is My Hero list. How many sleeps before you will be home?

I was due to run our local race next Saturday but this past Friday I fell down our front steps on my way to work and sprained my ankle so I am out of commission! I am so disappointed! This was going to be my first race after picking up running again eight weeks ago!

Julie,

Good going! :) Didn't do this run this year, but last year I did a run to raise funds for breast cancer research ... truly a great cause. While my "pet cause" remains leukemia research, I'd have to say that supporting breast cancer research is right up there for me! Come to think of it, there are so many good causes ... all that many more reasons to run/walk. :)

I'm sure some of you have heard about that 3-day walk to raise funds for breast cancer - that would be an amazing thing to complete, too. Here's a link: http://www.breastcancer3day.org/

Hey Meg - hang in there! I know how frustrating it is when you can't run. It will get better. This is your excuse to take it a bit easy and have DH do more than 50% of the cooking and cleaning ;) (if he doesn't already).

Let's all have a good week!

Great job Julie. I didn't do it this year, although I have in the past.
Natasha-I have signed up for the Baltimore to Washington 3-Day walk with a friend of mine. I'm kind of nervous about the distance and the fund-raising, but am looking forward to it.

Susan and Natasha,

I did the Avon Breast Cancer 3-Day from Santa Barbara to LA last October. Even though we got rained on for 2 days, it was one of the most incredible experiences of my life. Completing the 3-Day is definitely one of my proudest accomplishments.

Susan, I know how intimidating the distance and the fundraising can be. I hope you don't mind a little unsolicited advice. :) Start training early, and don't be shy about asking everybody you know to donate. At first I felt bad asking people for money, but I realized that if I didn't want to charge a bunch of money on my credit card, I had better get over it. Every little bit helps. I had some people give $5 and my company gave $300. In fact, if you post your walker number, I will send in a donation for you. If I can do it, so can you! Good luck!

Good for you! My aunt died of cancer that started as breast cancer so I thank you from the bottom of my heart for supporting such a worthy cause.

KristaMB,

Thanks for your words of encouragement. I'm glad to know someone else on this board has some experience doing it. I may bug you with lots of questions in the next few months. I think one of the hardest parts is going to be training through the long, cold winter. The nice thing is that there's a several mile path here that goes along the ocean. The scenery is nice; I just hope they keep it shoveled! My walker number is 1680 - the D.C. 3-day.

Thanks!
Susan

Susan,
Feel free to ask any questions that come up. In terms of training, usually a bunch of training groups will crop up, and information about them will be sent to you in the monthly mailings. I walked with a training group toward the end when I needed to be doing the 15-18 mile walks. It was nice to have a group to motivate me. BTW, I was on the opposite end of the weather spectrum. I had to train through the long, hot summer, only to be rained on during the walk!
