I had turned on the Today show this morning, to check in with Katie Couric's hair!!! It's true...I'd like to grow my short hair out as she has, and she's my model to monitor "hair stages", as in what I can expect when my hair reaches her length. Anyway, I was thinking that I just LIKE her, she seems so warm and friendly. Don't you think she'd be fun to have as a friend? Or she seems to me to be the type to chat on this BB; exchanging recipes, telling funny stories...maybe she's really Jewel, using an alias! Ah HA! I'm on to you, Jewel...!
:D
How about you...are there any women personalities you admire/respect?

Hard question. There are many more actresses I don't like than ones I do.
I adore Meg Ryan. Wish I could be her, or at least be as cute as her. :p
One of my favorite actresses is Susan Sarandon - I think she's an amazingly talented lady.
Hmmm....maybe others will come to me as more people post.

I am at a slight disadvantage because I do not pay much attention to tabloid TV shows/People magazine type of stuff, so I don't know much about their personalities.
I would have to say my favorite acresses (talent-wise) are Meryl Streep and Diane Keaton. But I would most like to look like Julia Roberts!

I don't actually watch the today show (i'm not a matt lauer fan-I've seen him make too many snotty comments toward people to respect him), but for some reason i really think katie couric is nice. She comes off so warm & friendly in such a way that you feel that she REALLY is like that. I just love it when she'll have some fashion/beauty editor on who's just cooing over $2500 prada sunglasses & katie will quip about how she'd never spend that! It's ridiculous to pay that much & we're all better off buying the imposter version for 25 bucks at Target or something, and that everyone else (including her) lives in the REAL world. Cracks me up everytime! She does it so nicely, not snide at all, and the fashion editor or who ever it is that particular time is just stuck there with a frozen smile on her face on live TV with no idea how to respond.
I absolutely LOVE drew barrymore! She's been there, done that, is a kooky free spirit, power goddess, funny femme fatale. She's seen it all and lived to tell about it. It seems that no matter what her ups & downs, she has remained true to herself in an industry that is more chameleon-like every day. As flaky as she may seem to some, I feel that girl has got her s**t together!
I could go on and on about Eleanor Roosevelt and oprah, but they're obvious. I'll have to think to see who else pops in my head.

I want to be Vianne Rocher from "Chocolat"...

I agree with many of you. I like Susan Sarandon, Meryl Streep, Diane Keaton, Barbra Steisand and Glenn Close. Aside from actresses, I admire Barbara Bush. That woman is sooo real. I love every wrinkle on her face. I admire women who know who they are and are totally comfortable with that. I feel that quality is far more attractive than simple good looks.

Emma Thompson is my favorite actress - she is so real and picks such great, intelligent roles. And if she isn't happy with what is out there, she writes her own!
Please don't throw things at me, but I really admire Madonna. She may not be the most talented performer around, but she is obviously very much her own person, speaks her mind, and is a brilliant business-woman.
Another take charge woman who can make things happen for herself is Oprah Winfrey - I love the fact that she has legions of people across our country reading books, what a great way to use your credibility!

As an NPR addict, the women who most frequently make an "appearance" in our home are some amazing NPR correspondents- I love Cokie Roberts, Susan Stamberg, Sylvia Poggioli;
Political figures-I greatly admire -Elizabeth Dole even though I am avowed liberal democrat! I think she is such an intelligent, savvy, honest person. I wish we would see more of her...
Actresses: Emma Thompson, Renee Zellweger, Nicole Kidman, Felicity Huffman, Kristen Scott Thomas, Drew Barrymore
And I'm not wild about her acting ability, but I adore Julia Roberts.
I also have a lot of respect and admiration for "plus-size" model Emme. She's gorgeous and clearly proud of her body and health. What a great antidote to what Hollywood and Madison Avenue routinely shove in our faces.
Oh- can't forget the 1999 U.S. Women's soccer team for making sweaty, muscular, tough girl power COOL!

As far as actresses go, I admire Gwyneth Paltrow. She seems like such a class act - elegant, nice, warm, friendly and intelligent.
As for other female personalities, I admire Oprah. She has really taken her fame and used it well. I also admire her approach to her talk show - she only does things that interest her - there's something very honest about that. For example, she only has actors/actresses on from movies she has seen and has enjoyed. No phony pandering to a bunch of stars she really has nothing to say to! What a nice change!
I'm sure there are soooooo many others that I just cannot think of right now.

I can come up with a much longer list of those I don't like than those I like.
But I do really admire Laura Bush, Barbara Bush, and Elisabeth Dole .
As for actresses, I like Drew Barrymore . She's made some really good movies. Has anyone seen The Wedding Singer? I thought it would be really dumb because of Adam Sandler, but it turned out to be a sweet movie.:)
Oh, and I also like Ashley Danfield (sp?) on MSNBC.

Queen Latifah because she's a big beautiful black woman who managed to get out of a gang and off the streets to really make something out of herself. She's talented and cool and seems genuine. Plus, I really do think she is one of the most beautiful women around.
Dolly Parton because SHE managed to pull herself out of the abject poverty of Appalachia and make something of HERSELF. Plus, she really took care of her momma and daddy after she made all of her money. I don't care for her voice, but I like her a lot. She's so funny and seems really sweet.
Emmylou Harris because she as the voice of an angel and is so natuarally beautiful. Gray hair and no makeup and she's still lovely.
And Gillian Welch for continuing the tradition of "real" country music. I met her a few years ago and got her autograph. She's really nice, too.
I don't care for tv/news personalities (don't watch a lot of tv in AM) or movie stars though Drew Barrymore is a cutie.

I love Stockard Channing, Emma Thompson, and Gwenyth Paltrow, in terms of actresses.
In the music world, I adore Mary Chapin Carpenter.
In the sports world... I enjoy watching the top women's tennis players.. the Williams sisters, Jennifer Capriati, Lindsay Davenport. I tune into their matches, although I wouldn't call myself an avid fan of any one of them in particular.
I don't get excited about most politicians, even the ones I like and support. :)

Katie Couric?? ME?? Not in a million years, she's too perky and nice!! I'm much more like the younger Kirstie Alley when she was on Cheers. Not near as cute, but the same type of attitude and personality I think... ;) The most recent version of Kirstie Alley just doesn't do it for me at all!
As for who I admire, I echo Drew Barrymore. One of my favorite movies is Never Been Kissed and I'm almost ashamed to say that I've never seen Ever After, but I will soon 'cause I bought it on Ebay! :D Considering my total obsession with Cinderella, you'd think that I'd have seen that film, but it passed me by! I admire anyone who can endure what she has in her life and come back better than ever. With all the tragic River Phoenix-type stories out there, Drew is an inspiration.
I also adore Shirley McClaine. I'm not sure I believe in all her channeling/past lives stuff, but as an actress I think she's wonderful. No one can watch Terms of Endearment and then Steel Magnolias and not be impressed by the woman's range as an actress!
I love Julia Roberts and I especially love a 'sleeper' movie she did called Sleeping with the Enemy. In my opinion, it was her best acting job before Erin Brokovich.
I used to like Meg Ryan but it seems like she plays the same part in every movie now...plus, I've got a MAJOR thing against her since she dumped my Dennis Quaid for that cad Russell Crowe. She totally lost my respect in the way she handled that entire thing, especially since she had their child to think about! I know, I'm partial to Dennis, but he's just getting better looking with age! (sigh!)

I always liked Goldie Hawn. She just seems so down to earth. I love Kurt Russell and to see the two of them together after all these years warms my heart. I also like Meg Ryan. I remember Sleeping With the Enemy with Julia Roberts. I liked that movie, but I'm not a huge fan of her's.
I like Katie Couric, too!! She looks really great lately.
My favorits "Star" is Jackie Joyner Kersee . I don't know if many of you know who she is. Jackie holds the world record in the Hepthathalon (8 events) and is the OLympic hepthalon and long jump champion many times (I think 3 times but not sure- my DH would know but he's out!). Jackie is considered by many to be the greatest female athlete of all time.
While I admire her athletis achievements tremendously it is her wonderful personality and generousity that make her so special. Jackie grew up very poor in East St. Louis- which I gather is a pretty rough place. Her mother died when she was 18 and never saw her DD accompishments. Jackie is warm, modest and articulate. She is in the process of raising millions of dollars to build a new community cener in her old neighborhood and has returned to live there as well.
Unlike the many obnoxious male athletes (who shall remain nameless) Jackie is down to earth !!
My other hero is Sun Yun suyi-that is not how you spell her name but I am having a senior's moment!:( She is the democratically elected leader of Burma, under house arrest there. She has got to be one of the bravest people on the face of the earth. Her DH died in England recently and she could not go see him (well she could but then she would never get back into Burma). She has not seen her two sons in years. She is also beautiful, gentle and intelligent beyound words.
I admire actresses like Susan Sarandon and Meryl Streep as well.Oprah is great too of course- although some times she gets a bit too preachy for my taste. I like that Rosie O'Donnell has given away alot of money and seems to care deeply about children- but she too can get on my nerves! :D

In general, I really admire Caroline Kennedy-Schlossberg. Not just for what she went through (but certainly not to slight her dramatic life), but for staying genuine and down to earth in spite of that. She just seems like someone I could easily be friends with.
I also think The US Women's Olympic Hockey Team ROCKS! Let's hear it for these super skaters. As a hockey player myself, I am so proud of how far women's hockey has come. Keep it up, ladies!!!
As far as actresses/celebrities, I really like Gwynneth Paltrow because she's very poised, talented and elegant (without being flashy). If a movie has Minnie Driver in it, I'm sure to watch it- she just exudes coolness to me. She's very confident and she's not a size 2!!
My favorite rocker chicks are Sheryl Crow and Melissa Etheridge- they're just totally cool and they keep it real. No BS with them- what you see is what you get.

I really like to watch OPRAH and ABC's THE VIEW.
The ladies on The View are : Lisa Ling, Joy Behar, Barbara Walters, Star Jones and Merideth Vieira. Watching them work together is like watching a group of friends having a good time after work. They are not shy and they love to talk. They work very well together.
Oprah has earned and continues to earn my respect and admiration. I find that she just doesn't talk about junk as so many of the other talk show hosts do. She has higher standards.
I wish I could watch these ladies more often.

I too like the View. I work at 11:30 and won't leave my house in the morning until the View is over. I just make it to work on time. I like my job but it must be nice to have as much fun at work as they do.
As far as actresses go I like Minnie Driver, Sandra Bullockand Rene Russo the best. Although I agree with the comment on Catherine Zeta Jones. What I wouldn't give to look like her.

Can't believe I forgot some of my favorite actresses:
Julianne Moore, Juliette Binoche, Kate Winslet, Toni Collette (Muriel's Wedding, The Sixth Sense)
And Maureen- you are right on with Aung San Suu Kyi she is an absolutely amazing woman- people with that amount of courage, intelligence, and strength make me feel so humbled. She is truly a hero of epic proportions.

Julie,
I love Toni Collette - would probably pass on kissing her though  !
I totally think she should have been Bridget Jones. She was the actress I envisioned while I was reading the book.
Did you see the movie?

My current "girl crush" is Gwen Stefani from No Doubt. I just think she is so cool. I also liked Brandi Chastain, but I heard that she was kind of a "B" so I have moved on.

I want to add Dr. Laura to my list. She gives no nonsense advice and she is willing to say the things that others won't. She doesn't try to be "politicaly correct".

Okay, I've come back with my "if I had to kiss her": Liv Tyler (DH and I watched "One Night at McCool's" last night). That girl has more sex appeal on one turn of a voluptuous ankle than 10 Gwyneths. Anyone ever see Stealing Beauty? One of Liv's first, set in Italy- gorgeous, sweet film. I can't imagine any red-blooded male (and not a few females) not falling in love with Liv after seeing this.
And Steve Tyler's daughter- who woulda thunk it? :)
Oh Lisa= I just now saw your post about "Bridget JOnes". Funny- DH and I rented it last weekend. I never thought of Toni Collette in that role, but I think she would have been perfect. I did like Renee Zellweger, but I so wanted to fix her hair- it made me crazy. I don't think Bridget was that much of a slouch!
Now, Colin Firth mmm, dreamy. Wait, wrong thread!
