View Full Version : I'm eating a bit of Kitchen Gadget Crow...

Just wanted to thank all who helped me with my various Garlic Press dilemmas over the past few months. I started with a poopy cheapie that only fit one garlic clove in the hopper at a time and stopped working at all after it hit the wall that I threw it against when it pinched my pinky for the last time! I then purchased a Good Grips OXO Garlic Press, and fell into Giddy Gadget Love! Oh that was an amazing press! Huge hopper, no floppy thing to try to fit down onto the garlic, and big 'ol meaty handles that were easy to squeeze...that is easy to squeeze until the darn handle snapped in half when I got a bit too frenzied in my affection for this tool.
All of you had told me that the Pampered Chef Garlic Press was the best you'd ever tried, but I resisted. I simply refused to believe that anything would be better than my Good Grips OXO, and I fully intended to just chalk that one bum handle up to bad luck, and go buy another one...until I saw that Pampered Chef booth at the fair in September. Lady there was showing off her wares, and I got sucked in. I felt like that kid in Poltergiest that was being told to "Walk into the light..." I placed an order for a PC Garlic Press, but still wondered if I would even like it. I already had the return planned in my mind! I would use it once or twice, just to say that I did, and then I would go back to Bed, Bath and Beyond to buy my Good Grips OXO, with a clear conscience. :p
Well, my PC Garlic Press finally arrived in the mail two days ago. I used it for the first time last night...and I'm in awe. If I thought I was in Giddy Gadget Love before, then I can only say that must have been only lust, because this is truly love...Not one bit of garlic squeezes out the sides of the floppy thing (which was my main reason for despising the floppy thing) and it gets every single bit of juice out of that clove. Handle is easy to squeeze, and the hopper is big enough to hold at least three cloves!
I just thought I'd publicly acknowledge that I was wrong in thinking that I knew better than the rest of you... I should have known. I promise to do better from now on!! :D:D
Jewel you always bring a smile to my face- poopy cheapie!! I love it. Have you thought about a career as a stand up comic??? Move over Roseanne Barr!! Thanks for the laughter you bring to us all!:)

I'm thrilled that you love your Garlic Press. You know that we would never say "I told you so", but .....
Anyway, you are not the only one in love with gadgets and appliances!

Hey Jewel - So glad to hear that you love your PC garlic press. Just don't use it for fresh ginger!
I was told it would work fine on fresh ginger, and the first time we tried to use it, DH snapped the thing in half! I know they are guaranteed for life but I can't be bothered to keep track FOR LIFE of a receipt for a less-than-$20 kitchen gadget... I have too much paper in my life already! :o
We have been bottled minced garlic users in recent years, mainly due to convenience, but DH swears that fresh is better, so I'll probably give it another go.

KathrynY, just want to set the record straight. The PC Garlic Press is guaranteed for two years, not life. I have used it for ginger, but you would only use a small piece. Definitely not a large piece the size of a piece of garlic.
Jewel, so glad you love the tool! Keep enjoying it. And if you ever lose the little cleaning tool, talk to your rep as you can just order that replacement part if needed.

I used my PC press for ginger regularly. I also have used jalapeno or habanero peppers on occasion, :D when I'm to lazy to chop them! ANd that way I get all the yummy hot juice out.
I do the ginger in slices about 1/4 inch thick. It also gets all the yummy juices out.
Speaking of Pampered Chef, don't be dumb like me and use the egg slicer for zuchinni. :) But it works good for mushrooms.

The Egg Slicer is also great for olives, bananas, strawberries and kiwi (just in case you didn't know already).

OK, so I'm lost...yeah, Jewel loves the PC garlic press (should we tell her that the Zyliss one is the exact same thing...oh, no then maybe chefbec might be upset but then maybe she doesn't know that they are the same thing). I love all the things that I have purchased through PC but they are not the end all and be all of kitchen gadgets (and nor have they been around longer than some of those.. there gadgets). Most of the gadgets that those of us discover have been around for over/nearly fifty years. The plain and simple truth is that those that came before us simply had another name for that contraption. And I can guarendamtee(where is that cajun when you truly need him) you that whatever you may call it whever you live, the SOUTH, not only has a better name but a better use
Please forgive me for my ramblings!

Thanks, chefbec, for your comments. From your description, I'm pretty sure the piece of ginger we used was much too big for the garlic press, which is why it broke :o . I've been very happy with every other PC product I've purchased, so I'm glad to understand what went wrong with this one.

Hey, sneezles. How are ya?
Do you have the press we used to sell? That was a Zyliss. Since I started selling almost 6 years ago, we've sold three different presses. The first was the Zyliss. The one Jewel has is not the same as the Zyliss. It is shaped differently and has a larger hopper. Unless Zyliss is now copying OUR design (which I haven't seen; maybe you have), PC's press is exclusive. I've noticed that Zyliss has copied our design for the Food Chopper.

My poopy cheapies have all died (:D thanks, Jewel, for the chuckle) and I'll follow everyone's advice. Problem is, there are not PC people around here.
Do they have a web page you can go to? (maybe I'll go check...)
I really want one of those presses!

While we're on the subject of PC . . . my oven shears are getting dull. Can I get them resharpened like regular scissors?
By the way, I love my PC garlic press. I've had it a long time, and it is a Zyliss. When it dies, I'll have to get the new PC one.

I used that Bad Boy again last night to make a pork tenderloin marinade for tonight's dinner, and once again was very impressed! :D Sneezles, I remember hearing that the Zyliss was the same, but from what I can tell, the PC press isn't the same anymore...here's a link to the one I have:
http://www.pamperedchef.com/our_products/catalog/product.jsp?productId=239&categoryCode=KC
Here's the current Zyliss offered by other suppliers:
http://r2.us.rmi.yahoo.com/rmi/http://www.cooking.com/products/shprodde.asp/rmivars%3ftarget=_top?SKU=158563
From what I can tell it's mainly the handle that has been revised, and maybe the size of the hopper, but I can't tell for sure. The handle does make a huge difference as far as I'm concerned.
Kima, thanks for the sweet words, and NO I would never try to take Roseanne's place! I don't have the butt for that job... ;) Funnybone, the graphic is cool!

You've probably already found it, but it's www.pamperedchef.com. I think you still have to go through a consultant to order, though. Maybe chefbec can help you out if you don't have a consultant in your area.

I think I built up the powers of the PC garlic press in my mind and then I ended up disappointed when I bought it a couple months ago. However, I tend to do that with everything. I've just recently started chopping all my garlic by hand, after watching the Good Eats vampire episode.
