Here is the deal - I used to run in college and never had any problems with any aches or pains or anything. I recently started running again and it is frequently making my hips ache. What could I be doing wrong? It is more on the front of my hips rather than the sides. Does that make any sense? Maybe it's my hip flexors? I don't know, I just hope someone out there can give me some helpful hints! Thanks in advance.

If you're new to running (this time anyway!) achey hip flexors is probably normal and just means that you haven't worked those muscles in a while. If you've been doing other kinds of exercises, your quads may be strong, but not your hips. I'd say just make sure you stretch them really well (you may even want to stop mid-run to stretch a bit more) and keep running. You should be fine.

I usually do the stretch where you grap your ankle behind you while standing, then shift your hips forward. I also do a forward lunge and focus on stretching my hips.

Abby-

I've had this problem too--but only on one hip. I went to the doctor, had xrays, etc. and nothing is wrong per se. I did buy a new pair of running shoes--apparently I am considered on the heavy side of being a runner (news to me!!)--and a good cushioned pair with motion control, plus orthotics (cheapies) my hip pain is pretty much gone.

Not trying to diagnose your problem of course but if the stretching doesn't help--maybe taking a look at your shoes again might help.

Thanks for the tips yall! I did try and stretch more last night after my run and I feel a little achey in my hips, but not too bad. I probably will break down and get a new pair of running shoes. Thanks again!
