This week my market has large shrimp for $5.99 a lb. I was thinking of buying it and freezing it for Christmas. It's been previously froze. I know you can freeze meat for along time but I wasn't sure about seafood. Any help? thanks

I've done it...I don't think Christmas it too far away, I think you'd be safe...

I'm not sure it's wise to freeze the shrimp twice. Is it possible for you to find another source for some shrimp that have never been thawed? I think the flavor and texture of the shrimp would be affected if you try re-freezing them.

I live so close to the shrimp supply here that I don't know what's possible in other parts of the world. ;)

Tiger, you can refreeze the shrimp. Jewel sells it "thawed for your convience", like I can't thaw my own shrimp. But, when you live in the Great Lakes area, you just put up with it. Vicky

You can also ask at the counter if they have any that isn't thawed yet in the back and just buy that and keep it frozen. Often the shrimp that has been "thawed for my convenience" is still frozen when I get it home.

Tiger I have always refrozen shrimp, my DH loves it and it's great to have in a pinch. Don't sweat it.

If I remember correctly, several of us were discussing this issue about a year ago, and I seem to recall that Cooking Light responded that refreezing shrimp did not compromise the taste/texture/quality.

Do any of you other "oldies" remember this being discussed long ago?

i always thought you couldn't refreeze shrimp. hmmm...

but a lot of times, you can ask for it still frozen from bags in the back. i usually do that.

have fun with your great shrimp sale!
