Has anyone ordered from Penzeys Spices either catalog or on-line? If so, what has been good?

Hi Gabby!

Actually this subject was touched on just recently. If you run a search (upper right corner near prefences) you'll find at least a couple of threads regarding Penzeys. (I still like The Spice House, also online and catalogue.)

Have fun!

Since the blank e-mail thing persists, can you give any more suggestions? Please, please...

I'm lucky to have a Penzey's spice store in town. I buy all my spices there. They are very fresh and less expensive than the grocery store brands. I would highly recommend Penzey's.

Gabby, Bless your heart for fighting that crowd at the seafood fest the w/e! I stayed in my house. I live down there, but I dislike large crowds. I bow to your bravery! You will love the Penzeys Catalog, I think it is a great find! See, us east coasters are always the last to know

I recently got my first order from Penzey's. I ordered online. I was very pleased with their products. I especially like the dressing base I ordered. It is a peppercorn base that is mixed with sour cream and mayo. I used fat free sour cream and low fat mayo. It is delicious!

Gail, I'm one of those who have ordered from Penzey's for several years now, but I had to check out the Spice House since you've mentioned it several times. Have you noticed the similarity between them? It appears The Spice House may be an offspring or some form of relative to Penzey's.

The Spice House refers to itself as a second generation spice business and pays tribute to the Penzeys, but more interesting were that they appear to have spice blends under the same names (Bicentennial Rub, Pasta Sprinkle....). I don't know if the blends are in exactly the same proportions or not. I did find a few spices on each that the other didn't carry, but overall, I was suprised how similar they were.

Hi, I live in the city where Penzey's/Spice House has a home. In fact, I believe they originated here in Milwaukee. From what I have gathered, the parents started this spice business years ago and their kids have pretty much taken over. The Spice House is still located downtown and is run by one arm of the family. Penzey's is on the West side and is run by another arm of the family. Both businesses overlap in some of their mixes, however each one has certain specialty mixes that they do not share. The Spice House allows purchases by weight (bulk)or by jar, whereas Penzeys pre-bottles and pre-bags their spices, so you are somewhat limited if you only need a small amount or a large amount. I find myself going to both shops for their specialty items. In fact, I don't own any other spices but their's.
Hope this answers some of your questions.
W.

Thanks for the info.

Yes, I knew there'd been some connection between the two businesses, however, as it so happened, the things I happened to need were available from The Spice House, not Penzey's. In putting in a plug for Spice House, I'm not trying to imply it's necessarily superior to Penzey's, rather that I was happy with their products and service and feel they deserve equal time.

All these comments got me interested, so I checked out Penzeys web site yesterday and ended up ordering about 10 different spices. Now I can't wait for the UPS man to get here next week!

I recently placed my first order with Penzeys and have been quite pleased. Ordering was easy (I ordered on-line) and delivery was on time. Then I went out of town so haven't had time to "play" with my new toys. I ordered the Turkish kebab seasoning, plus some salad dressings. I'll post my thoughts when I get a chance to try them.

Gail, I'm glad you did. I've been happy with what I have gotten from Penzey's , but I was unhappy with Penzey's when they stopped selling most of their spices in 1 oz. bags. I have jars I reuse and don't like to pay a lot more for a wasted jar each time I order something I can't use 1/4 lb of. I was glad to see The Spice House sells smaller quantities in bulk form. I also meant to check to see if they have a blend that Penzey's stopped selling. I'm looking forward to trying them and may well use both. And I do love opening those UPS boxes full of good smells and inspirations.

I am also waiting on my latest Penzey's order to come in. Hopefully, it will be waiting for me when I get home today-what a treat for the weekend!

I have to put in a plug for their ground chipolte pepper spice. It is SOOOOOO good!

I agree on the Chipotle powder. It's excellant in salsa's, chili's and spicy rubs among numerous other things. I also like the Southwest Seasoning, Milwaukee Iron Seasoning (Spice House only)and Cajun (Makes a mean grilled chicken sandwich)
Also very good:
Curry-Maharajah,very versatile / Rogan Josh great for stews - Penzeys & Spice House
Chesapeake - excellant on fish and chowders -has a little bite to it - Penzeys
Fajita - Penzeys and Spice
Fox Point - great on scrambled eggs and tater salad - P
Greek - sprinkle on chicken, lamb tastes like a gyro - P
Northwoods - great on fish and taters -P
Old World - better than Lawrys - P & S
Ozark Fried Chicken Seasoning - very versatile - S
Soup Bases - Gourmet Chicken Soup base-P & S
Beef Tea Soup Base--Makes excellant broth - never buy canned anymore.
Just some of my favorites.
Everytime I go into one of their shops for 1 or 2 items I leave with 4 or 5 more.
I'm a spice nut.
Have a good one!

My husband says there couldn't be many folks with more spices than I have, but it's nice to see I'm not alone.

Yeah! I got home from work today and the UPS man had delivered my order from Penzeys. Has anyone bought the Green Goddess seasoning, or the sandwich sprinkles? I also got a few types of curry--can't wait to try them!
