View Full Version : Maui Recommendations
Although I haven't been back to Maui in many years, I remember Erik's Seafood Grotto used to be excellent (that's in Kahana, not exactly next door to where you'll be.) The food at Pineapple Hill, as I recall, was lousy, but it's a great place to catch a tropical drink at sunset.
Have you eaten at Mama's before? (Just in case, bring bug repellent for those 'skeeters.)
Have a great time!
KimberlyE - have a fabulous time in Maui, it's my favourite place!
I recommend that you take in a luau - they have great Hawaiian food that you might not otherwise try. We went to the Aston Wailea and it was fabulous, and not far from Makena. I've also been to the Marriot up in Kaanapali, and it was good too.
I also recommend Halli'imaile General Store - it's on the way up to Haleakela, and in the midst of the pineapple fields (I think it's the one you refered to). I had a great lunch there - all fresh and using local ingredients. It's had some great reviews. You should make a reservation for dinner.
Peggy Sue's in Kihei is a 50's diner with great milkshakes!
Erik's Seafood Grotto is also great - as Gail noted. It's in Kahana - a ways up the coast.
Roy Yamaguchi's two restaurants, also in Kahana are good: Roy Yamaguchi's Nicolina and Roy's Kahana Bar & Grill.
Now I want to go back! Have a great trip and let us know of any other great places to try.

I'm leaving tomorrow for a week in Maui. We are staying in the Makena area. Any good suggestions for restaurants? They can be anywhere on the island and I already know I want to go to Mamma's Fish House and/or HaleMalli (sp?), and we will probably go back to Roy's for Chocolate Souffle (my favourite). Thanks for any suggestions that you may add. Aloha.

Ooh, ooh, I want to hear this too! We are going to Maui and staying at the Grand Wailea (sp?) resort in November. I don't know where it is on the island. Any suggestions near there?

Do NOT miss the MAUI PLANTATION - just about the center of the island. Not fancy - but hands down the best food we had the whole trip. The fruit salad was incredible - a huge plate of superb fruit with a dish of triple flavor sherbert. The Mahi Mahi was incredible too. The atmosphere is not too impressive, go for lunch. I wish we would have eaten there every day, we didn't find any place else to be as good. Plus they have beautiful gardens and orchard you can walk through... DON'T MISS IT!!!!

Presuming you're coming in from Kahalui Airport, once you come across to the west side of the island, you're going south, past Kihei to Wailea.
My Hawaii bible has always been Hawaii Access by Richard Saul Wurman. Even though I've been to Hawaii several times, I always travel with a copy. The book is filled with great suggestions and reviews of places to stay, eat, and see-- and to my taste, he's right on the nose. Problem is the most recent issue (unless they've updated since last year) was published in 1997, meaning some businesses have come and gone since then.
Update from the "evil" Gail to Beth Y:
While raiding Borders yesterday, I checked out Hawaii Access and see it WAS updated last year, so suggestions are pretty current. I also noted there's a Jameson's on the island now. I've been to their restaurants on Oahu and The Big Island and have found them both to be pretty good. I didn't note the location too carefully though. Napili Bay, maybe? Somewhere north of Kaanapali, anyway, which'll be a bit of a drive from your area (but not horrendous.)

Gail, who said you were evil....must have been my twin! Actually, in the previous post, I was just particularly amused by your usual sarcastic wit.
Thanks for the Maui info. I will print this off.

I have not been to Maui in 6 yrs. but, my MOST favorite restaurant was in Lahinia, the spelling is off, but it was called Longhis. I still remember it as one of the best places I have ever been. If it is still there, try it. I miss Maui alot and hope to retire there someday. Marcia
