I know that the HeatherFeather Rice Method has long been praised and lauded on this board, but last week with the in-laws in town, I was so incredibly happy to be in on this secret. The double-special micro method allowed me to continue with the SuperFeministMartha facade that I have erected in front of the real me, putting a light, fresh, well-executed dinner on the table in 22 minutes flat while flitting around my recently-vaccuumed home expounding on world politics and the like.

t-22 minutes: Rinse and measure basmati rice. Pour self and in-laws glass of wine

t-20 minutes: Rice in micro on 100% for five mins. Preheat oven to 500. Chop many cloves of garlic; mix some into yougurt along with lemon juice and buzz with handheld mixer

t-15 minutes: Rice gets set at 60% for 15 minutes. Set table, with neatly pressed cloth napkins, spotless flatware, and shiney wine-glasses-cum-water-goblets

t-10 minutes: Remove salmon from fridge. Rinse, rub with some of the chopped garlic, salt, pepper. Throw skin side down into hot oven on a cookie sheet.

t-8 minutes: Use remainder of garlic to make vinegarette with honey mustard, balsamic, and imported small-batch olive oil. Toss with baby spinach from a bag, a chunk of crumbled goat cheese, and sliced apple (from the farmer's market, doncha know)

t-1 minute: Plate roasted salmon, drizzle with garlic yougurt sauce, call everyone to dinner....Rice is perfect.

Take that, evil cassarole-making backward-thinking mother-in-law! Maybe I am not perfect, but you sure as heck are never going to see it!

It was all about the rice, baby.

I tried the mirco-method for brown rice but it didn't work too well. I think my container was too big...could that have been it? The rice just was not cooked. Of course, it could be my lovely 12 year old microwave.

last night, i made a package of yellow rice. i was determined to also make it in the microwave...lo and behold, there were microwave directions that were very similar to heather's methods... i followed that and the rice came out more perfect than ever!

DH proclaimed it the best yellow rice ever! then we both agreed to never make rice on the stovetop again!!!!!!! :)

thanks again heather!

Gee, guys, I'm blushing from all that praise. I am glad your dinner was such a big success - your play by play reminded me of a "Naked Chef" episode on Food Network. (If you've never seen the show - the chef frantically dashes about the kitchen in no time slap dabbing together a fabulous gourmet meal in under 30 minutes and it always comes out astonishingly perfect.)

Amcleod -did you follow the different instructions I posted later for the brown rice or did you floow the white rice instructions? If you missed the brown rice instructions, they are further down the old thread (if you click on the thread link above in SoCal's message, it is near the bottom of the thread) If you did follow the method, then I think you may need to adjust the time for your machine. My microwave is 1100 watts, so it cooks pretty fast.

I just wanted to say that I like your name, Heatherfeather. It reminds me of my favorite story about my great-grandma, who was really eccentric, and apparently quite hard of hearing. She thought that my 2nd cousin's name was Feather. For almost a year. She was really cold to the poor girl because her parents had given her such a weird name. So one day, she asked my mom "Patty, why on earth did they name that youngin' FEATHER," to which my mom replied, while stifiling astonished laughter, "Mamaw MaryAnn, it's HEATHER." After that, she was a lot nicer to Feather, um Heather.

Thanks for reminding me of a favorite family story with your name! Oh, and I have not tried your rice method, but I'm making curry next week and will have to try it then.
