Random question, I know - but I was just looking at one of the featured recipes on this site & it calls for 2 tbps of ketchup. I never think of using ketchup in a recipe. The only 2 times I would consider it are baked beans & meatloaf topping. Anything else out there?

I keep a bottle in the house to make my mom's recipe for traditional Jewish brisket. It's not trendy, but on a cold winter evening, it's wonderful. Other than that, I hardly touch it. (the ketchup, that is).

Tsk. The answer is no.

...largely because I was traumatized by ketchup as a child. My grandmother's idea of spaghetti was to serve it with fried chicken livers and ketchup.

Honest.

Someone posted a recipe a while ago for a spinach salad dressing that called for ketchup. I thought it was a bit strange, but went ahead and made it anyway. It was really great!

Rarely, but yes, on occasion.

An example: Mark Miller's Chipotle Chile BBQ Sauce, the recipe for which I have posted here before. It is DELICIOUS and Mr. Miller is well known for his Coyote Cafe; good enough credentials to persuade me to use the "lowly" ketchup once in a while!

On the CL recipe search I found a very good recipe for scalloped potatoes that calls for ketchup, maybe even as much as a quarter cup if I'm remembering correctly. I thought it was strange too, but it tastes yummy!

JanetJ, I believe I too made the scalloped potatoes recipe from CL last Christmas and it was delicious. I also thought that the ketchup addition was weird, but the end result was excellent.

The only other time I can think of that I cook with ketchup is when making Barbequed Baked Lentils, another CL recipe.

I have a great recipe for swiss steak using ketchup and chili sauce (heinz), its easy and my family loves it. I even serve it to guests.

Ketchup will be sweet, while tomato paste is not.

I've made something recently, I think the Gingered Flank Steak that called for ketchup. Once I used tomato paste instead and liked the dish. The second time I didn't have any tomato paste and used ketchup. It was definately sweeter, I think I liked it better with the tomato paste.

I use ketchup in a 'Deviled Chicken on the Bone' recipe that I've adapted over the years from Fannie Farmer. I think the original recipe calls for chile sauce, but I usually have a bottle of ketchup in the house, so I substitute that.

I also use it in BBQ Chicken, BBQ beans and Meatloaf.

You poor soul. No ketchup now ever? Not even on fries? Guess I can't blame ya there.

I needed sloppy joes in a big big way one night (ever get those off-the-wall cravings??? Oh well, that's another thread). Anyway I thumbed through my Betty Crocker cookbook, and the recipe called for ketchup, water, diced onion and green pepper. Say what??? I did it, but tossed in some wonderful Adobo Sauce from American Spoon Foods, a little white wine vinegar, a touch of brown sugar, some crushed red pepper and a little cayenne. DH declared them the best ever.

So in a word, yes. But that's the only time that I can recall.

I could not live without ketchup.

On burgers, hot dogs, and eggs. In meat loaf, sloppy joes, sauce for meatballs, barbecued beef, baked beans etc. I have a couple of salad dressing recipes that contain ketchup and both are excellent. I have a curry dip that has ketchup in it and it gives it just the right flavor and color. But definitely NOT in spagetti sauce.

I come from a long line of ketchup lovers. My family reminisces that my grandma had to save her ration coupons to buy ketchup during the 2nd world war.

It may not be chic but I stand proud. I LOVE KETCHUP! (But it must be Heinz. There is no substitute.)

No, no.

I have nothing against using ketchup as a condiment, it's just the notion of using it as a highly visible ingredient which gives me the heebie-jeebies.

And let me clarify for you, schuh. The ketchup wasn't in the sauce. The ketchup WAS the sauce. Ketchup. On noodles. That's it-- well, excepting those slimy chicken liver pieces, that is. (shivering wildly) Ugh. I cannot tell you how horrid that spaghetti was...

Oh dear, Gail. That dish sounds horrid.
My husband was a food service worker in college and he swore the sauce for the spaghetti was ketchup. Maybe I should start believing him... At least they didn't put chicken livers in it!

found a great meatloaf recipe on the inside cover of " turkey store" ground turkey using ketchup and also as the glaze. It was
wonderful.

Very interesting. I was just wondering if I was the only one who never used it in recipes.

And Gail - that might be the worst meal I could think of!!!!!!!!!!!

I've seen the Iron Chefs use ketchup, for what that's worth. And on a more personal level, when I lived in Germany for a couple of years I was surprised to find that people commonly used ketchup in recipes. At first I was disgusted, but then I came to recgonize it as a legitimate ingredient. I had to overcome my preconceived notion of ketchup being a "child's condiment." Then I realized that it is nothing other than tomatoe puree, vinegar, sweetner, and spices. What's so gross about that? It's sort of like how the idea of using mayonaisse in a cake disgusted me until I realized it was eggs and oil. . .

That being said. I can't think of a single recipe I've used ketchup in over the last year or so! The upshot is, I accept it as an ingredient now, but I don't come across that many recipes that call for it.

Going to look for those scalloped potatoes now!

This is really good. I think I usually use more cranberry sauce. Maybe even a whole can.

I begrudgingly use it in BBQ recipes, other than that not at all. This is just one more example of why DH calls me a card carrying commie. He says it is unAMerican not to eat ketcup on french fries!

I like ketchup but never cooked with it until I found this great baked chicken recipe. It's really good. I posted the recipe on a separate thread so that everyone could see it.

I looked through some of my recipes and I have several that call for ketchup (I've done the scalloped potatoes also). They range from sauces to baked beans to Asian (yes-Asian!). So yes, I use it in cooking.

I have a recipe for vegetarian chili and it calls for a 1/2 cup ketchup. And other than turkey/meat loaf that is the only time I've ever seen a recipe with ketchup in it.

I am extremely hyper-active and when I was 5 yrs. old was put on a special diet to eliminate all highly sugared foods. In other words I haven't had ketchup (catsup!!! are we Canadians the only ones who spell it this way???) in 30 years!!! I don't miss what I can't remember. Plus I never ever eat fast food (another childhood thing) and can't even stand the smell of the stuff. Wierd, because I'm married to the junk food/fast food master. He could live on burgers and has quite the reputation for this!! And to make things even more pathetic, I have NO sweet tooth what so ever  Well my parents raised me on bean sprouts and tofu (probably why I can't stand the stuff now) and for birthdays mom would make a carob (mock chocolate) cake. To say the least, my B-day parties were NOT the talk of the town, well at least not in a posotive way!
